Bruins Look For One More Win In Los Angeles Regional
Beau Amaral and his Bruins (45-13) are just one game away from a date in the NCAA Super Regional. Last night CF Amaral did his part in chipping in during Bruins' 6-3 victory over the defending National Champions LSU Tigers. Tonight the Bruins look for one more victory as they take on UCI, who just closed out the defending National Champions LSU Tigers earlier this afternoon by a score of 4-3.
It's a Sunday which means Rob Rasmussen (9-2, 2.89 ERA) will get the start for our Bruins. Hopefully Rob will put together another consistent outing and continue to get run support from his team-mates, enabling him to join Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer in the 10 win club this season.
The game will be televised live on CST (Cox Sports Television) and will feature a live video stream on ESPN3.com. The first pitch is scheduled for this evening at 6:00 pm PST. You can also follow along with GameTracker or get updates on Ryan's UCLA baseball twitter. So might as well thread this as our game thread with updates, thoughts, analysis and anything else.
GO BRUINS.

UCI beat LSU in a close, fun game
We’ve got the Anteaters tonight.
For everything UCLA baseball, visit my UCLA baseball twitter.
Pac-10 Update
ASU (2-0) plays Hawaii (2-1) (ASU must win one of two to advance)
Florida St. (2-0) 4, Oregon (2-1) 0 (Oregon must beat Fl. St. twice in two games to advance)
Wazzu (2-1) 1, Arkansas (2-0) 0 (Wazzu must beat Arkansas twice in two games to advance)
All other Pac-10 teams have been ELIMINATED.
For the love of all that is holy
Don’t let Gillespie win a regional
and to show i’m not bitter, anybody need me to do them a favor that involves mr rollins and mr rantz?
Managing Editor/Chief Lackey-And The Valley Shook
Hate to see Pettis do poorly...
because I’ve known the kid since he was playing at Westhills Baseball. Oh well, GO BRUINS
Softball
Arizona beat Tennessee 8-0 (5 innings) in game one. They’re also winning 3-2 in the 6th in game two. Winner plays UCLA in the championship round.
Quite possibly
This year, UCLA is 1-0 against Tennessee and 2-1 against Arizona.
IN HONOR OF JACK
A circular black patch with the initials “JG” adorn the left sleeve of UCLA’s uniforms, in honor of the late Jack Gifford. Among the program’s most loyal and passionate supporters, Gifford played for UCLA alongside former head coach Gary Adams in the early 1960s. Gifford, who passed away on Jan. 11, 2009, and his wife Rhodine generously funded the construction of UCLA’s state-of-the-art hitting facility. Named in their honor, the Jack and Rhodine Gifford Hitting Facility stands 23-feet high and spans 10,500-square feet.
Boston in foul trouble
Garnett, Wallace, Perkins and Davis all with 3 fouls. Even Shelden Williams had 2 in 4 minutes of play.

Does anyone else have the feeling
that this announcer is pulling for the SEC?
I think the clue was when he said.."I'm pulling for the SEC" ;)
Then again, with LSU out, they still have Vandy, Bama, and Auburn to cheer for.
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
OT..
just imagine the road trips if we go to the Pac-16!
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
I'm looking forward to Austin
The others… not so much. MAYBE Norman.
Looks like the pitcher is tagging the batter.
A runner is a runner, though.
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
Pac-10 score update
Softball: Arizona defeats Tennessee 5-2, and will meet the Bruins in the championship round starting tomorrow
Baseball:
WSU 7, Arkansas 1 (Bot. 5)
Fl. St. 5, Oregon 3 (Bot. 7)
Other: Looks like Fullerton is going to play Minnesota for the super regional bid.
This is why I hate the bunt.
We’re just giving up the middle of the lineup with this strategy. You give up the #4 hitter by bunting the runners to 2nd and 3rd, they walk the #5 hitter and set up the inning-ending GIDP. Let the middle of the lineup swing the bat. The fact that Pettis is getting hit hard and just hit a batter makes it worse.
Ryan may disagree with me, but when you have 1st+2nd and 0 out and the middle of the lineup coming up, you should plate more than a run.
ESPECIALLY in the 3rd inning when there is a lot of baseball left to be played.
It’s not like we’re playing for one run in the 9th inning here.
To their defense
Uribe hit a line drive to the 2nd baseman last time, against the same pitcher. So having 2 guys in scoring position without the walk, perhaps the bases loaded with no outs with an error, with the #5 hitter up is basically the same thing.
I like the aggressive demeanor, but its an aggressive-conservative call if you catch my drift
Formerly ucla13_usc9
And the fact that Uribe hit a line drive is the key point.
Line drives are a much higher % of being hits than grounders or pop-ups or fly balls.
Woulda liked more with the bases loaded and 1 out but I definitely like the lead
Am having a tough time following this game while the Lakers and my Blackhawks are on at the same time. Plus my girlfriend is a South Carolina Gamecocks fan so she had her game going on her computer. Sports overload!!
I really wanted
To beat UT again! I guess I grew towards a love hate relationship with Knoxville since Lane left
Formerly ucla13_usc9
Except that
neither team is ever mediocre – or worse.

I'm curious to see the splits.
I wish that kind of information were as readily available as it is in MLB.
What if he steps on the line
and it becomes a 2 5 minutes later

would be pretty funny.
this possibility always amused me in football—if a RB breaks a record and then loses yardage on the next play.
That happened to Barry Sanders
He hit 2000 yards. Then lost like 3 yards on the next play. And then got back to 2000 yards the next play.
I’m split about that expansion
One half wants me to be happy to have a Championship game with Texas every year, the other doesn’t want to see the Big XII be completely demolished for the pure essence of $
Formerly ucla13_usc9
But
It wouldn’t even be the Pacific conference! PAC East doesn’t even get anywhere close to the Pacific Ocean
Formerly ucla13_usc9
it's not unprecidented...
the Pacific Coast League in baseball has teams all over the place…iowa, memphis, new orleans, …OKC….:p
I remember the Pacific 8 and didn't like the idea of going to the Pac-10.
I really don’t like the idea of a half dozen southern schools coming into the conf. Kinda messes up the rivalry thing. I would prefer Utah, Boise St, Colorado, etc.
Well for most of the season
It’s the Pac-8 + a game against OK or TX every year
In basketball, you'd have 14 games in division, and 8 against the other division.
Then there’s the conference tournament…24 games in conference. Not much time for the preseason.
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
Would you have a once around with out of division?
Then Home & Home in division? That would seem logical
Formerly ucla13_usc9
I would guess only playing half of the other side every year
Home and home in the division, plus 4 games against the other division, plus a Big East-size monster tournament (3-5 games, depending on seed)
formerly bruinhoo
But Boise St's rival is Idaho
or maybe Idaho St. Either way…
by SuperBruinMan on Jun 6, 2010 7:18 PM PDT up reply actions
Pac wouldn't take BYU
Because of the religious aspect, the “no games on Sundays,” and it’s not a research institution.
And the fact
That BYU and Utah would lose around 5 NCAA teams, and attract no additional markets
Formerly ucla13_usc9
The rivalry thing is overstated anyway.
As long as the rivalries get to play each other at the end of the season every year.
If we're going to seriously look at expansion
I don’t want to sell ourselves short by limiting ourselves to schools like Utah and Boise St. No offense to them, but they don’t bring a whole lot besides football. Most of the other schools mentioned in the Pac 10 + 6 plan do.
Definitely better than a good number of Pac-10 teams.
And a finals appearance in the 90s. Plus, how can you turn down Keith Van Horn’s knee-high socks?
Maybe
But the bar is higher for newcomers. This ain’t charity, and new schools have to benefit us. I don’t see what Utah brings to the table.
I agree with you if it's them vs. the TX schools.
It’s no comparison. But they’re not a bad program in the two big sports.
CRN against CU and UW?
That’d sell some tickets.
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
No one will remember that
In a few years. Kiffin will have done something just as bad by then
Formerly ucla13_usc9
True
They have more history than about half of the Pac-10
by SuperBruinMan on Jun 6, 2010 7:23 PM PDT up reply actions
Way short.
But we have to remember that sports has nothing to do with it. It’s all about the money.
You’ll never see Boise get invited, SDSU, or anything like that, PAC 10 Officials want to create a supernetwork of TV
Formerly ucla13_usc9
I mean we're not talking about an AOL Time Warner merger here.
What’s your opposition outside of the corporate merger context?
Basically
I would anticipate FSN losing half of its market, because ESPN/ABC would cover the first half of the season for the PAC-West
Formerly ucla13_usc9
You say that like it's a bad thing.
FSN doesn’t exactly do a fantastic job. I would love a bigger national profile.
I love FSN
Aside from the OSU-UCLA shenanigans, I have been very impressed with their coverage
Formerly ucla13_usc9
So you have to listen to Norrie
Half the year? Petros is much better even if he is a Trojan
Formerly ucla13_usc9
Petros is better than Norrie
But Norrie is really their “D” team. I’m anticipating us getting their top crew soon enough with CRN at the helm.
Is that supposed to be worse than Petros?
I don’t think he’s a bad commentator, but he’s certainly not enough to make me want to keep FSN.
To each his own
But I fear that Big 10 Commentators would slide down to the West’s games
Formerly ucla13_usc9
Honestly, I fear basketball commentary more
That’s Duke Vitale vs. Donnie Mac.
I’m taking Donnie Mac every time.
I think CBS would gobble it up...
have a SEC/PacWest doubleheader
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
In football?
Tennessee is the only team that travels anywhere west, and I do not want to see CBS touch PAC 10 Soil
Formerly ucla13_usc9
UT v Aggies one week
then UCLA U$C
finish with Army-Navy. Sounds like a good sked to me.
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
I would fear
That PAC-East Schedules would be drastically different, like Texas would play Tech, OU, and A&M in the last few weeks
Formerly ucla13_usc9
Texas/OU has always been early October, as I recall
That and the Turkey day weekend game w/TamU. The Tech game is a scheduling wild card, of course (like this season)
formerly bruinhoo
Which is why Utah should come off the table
If we can get Colorado and Texas schools. SLC isn’t Denver or any number of big Texas cities.
I refuse to go to Logan
For whatever reason related to UCLA, I refuse to go there
Formerly ucla13_usc9
I look at Utah, Colo and Boise St differently than I do a Texas or Texas A&M
Especially in football. It’s just something in my head that says that I would rather meet up with Texas in a bowl game than say Boise St.
yeah, of course.
more hype. same reason I was excited to go to SF for a bowl game against FSU but wouldn’t go to Vegas to see us play BYU or Wyoming.
Yahoo Boxscore
10:03 BOS – G. Davis misses a layup
10:06 BOS – G. Davis offensive rebound
10:08 BOS – G. Davis misses a layup
10:10 BOS – G. Davis offensive rebound
10:12 BOS – G. Davis misses a layup
10:14 BOS – G. Davis offensive rebound
oh boy
Yeah, after that though...
terrible defense, and I hate when players shoot 3s on transition when they have no rebounding help. it’s poor discipline.
I know exactly what you were talking about
They had numbers and could have had more of an opportunity if he would have made the pass.
Nice job getting out of that mess.
keep the bullpen warmed up, though.
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
Rasmussen got out of it
Way to hunker out of it with 2 Js.
Oregon has been eliminated
Wazzu is up 7-5 in the 7th
More annoying: Rondo's (and Desmon Farmer's) upside-down headband or kids wearing New Era caps with the sticker still on it?
Farmer plays for the Celtics?
Ok, that makes me feel a bit better for rooting for the Lakers (or more accurately, not actively rooting against).

Fatburger? These guys need to get to Tommy's!

BS Call. Again.
These officials are giving PAC-10 officials a run for their money. Every time they go to replays they are not fouls.
It's been really bad today.
There were many times inside the paint were there were no fouls called on obvious calls and would turn around and call a touch foul.
Anybody else watching UCLA / UCI? Ras should be pulled. He's tired and will start giving up[ gopher alls if not pulled.
He’s tired and will start giving up gopher balls if not pulled.
Bleeding powderkeg blue and gold for 55 years. Go Bruins!
You get the feeling that these ESPN3 play by play guys
don’t care anything about the game they are watching?
They gotta promo LSU..that's who pays the bills.

They are normally the LSU crew
I doubt they care all that much after this afternoon’s result
formerly bruinhoo
They'll be cheering for the bruins...
and get home tomorrow morning.

Ray Allen beat the Lakers today.
Refs weren’t great on either side. Four of the Celtics’ front line had 3 fouls at half. Hell, Shelden Williams got in the game.
Someone got a big check to keep Boston in this thing.
How can you watch a replay that shows Garnett knocking the ball out and not call it that way.
$$$$$$$
that replay guy was the same guy who was the ref in the '04 UCLA-USC game
and blew the Havner fumble return for TD.
Hey Guys!!
Adam Sandler’s body double from The Waterboy is in the booth! Good thing, as some people might be confused and think there is a baseball game going on.
formerly bruinhoo
Anyone watching the postgame show on KABC?
What is Michael Cooper wearing!?
I mean, I hate counterfactuals generally...
but it would be nice to see us maximizing run opportunities in the whole game, yes.
this situation i don’t mind a bunt nearly as much because it’s the 8th inning and you know already how the game has played out. much different than doing it in the 3rd inning.
Cody
I like that first name. Didn’t Cody Keefer hit the walkoff dinger against Southern Cal?
We have two clutch Cody.
Yeah there is that
But it has the “I’m at a minor league game” feel. Cheesy. But yeah, errors definitely abound.
Groundout by UCI, runner advances to 2nd.
I have dishes to do, lettuce to wash to prep for lunches for the week… let’s finish them off.
Scores of Note
Fullerton 1, Minnesota 1, Top 2nd
WSU 10, Arkansas 7, Bottom 9th
ASU 8, Hawaii 4. ASU advances to the super regional.
3 outs away
"Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are." --John Wooden
Final from Fayetteville
Washington State 10, Arkansas 7. Winner take all tomorrow.
Ahh world cup commercials!
Can’t wait! I’ve printed out the TV schedule and highlighted the games I must watch!
I've more or less resigned myself to the fact that the U.S. will lose to England.
Especially with Altidore hurt.
Well I'll just be pleasantly surprised if they win
They’ll hold serve and win last 2, but not as hopeful with England game.
I have all the US Games
plus all the South Korea games. I also will pay attention to Brazil vs Ivory Coast, although it depends on Drogba’s health. Isn’t Ghana decent also? Ghana vs Germany should be good, although I don’t know about the European teams playing outside of Europe.
Don't forget
Camerooooooooooooooooon. I am rooting for those guys for obvious reasons (along with US, Brazil and Argentina).
Has Drogba's health been updated?
I thought he was just gonna be out, but I only heard something right when he injured himself.
I think he broke his hand or arm
and he’s getting surgery so he hopes he can play, but it’s his hand… I’ve been joking he doesn’t need it except if they play Argentina. (hehe)
I’m by no means a soccer fan
But all of this hype has really made me anxious. Can’t wait for Saturday, hopefully that’s on your list!

(of course, when our baseball game is over, haha)
Fullerton 3, Minnesota 0, mid 2nd
Fullerton leaves 3 on
Would we host super regional or do they travel back and forth?
I think it’s later, but not 100% sure.
I almost want Fullerton to advance
Just for the payback (even though they scare me). But still gotta get 3 more outs
1 more
We're havin' too much fun today. We ain't thinkin' 'bout tomorrow.
Actually,
If your stride is incorrect, driving and sliding past the bag could save a fraction of a second
Formerly ucla13_usc9
Eh
I’ve always understood the slide as a means to avoid a tag or break up a double play. You lose time 99% of the time.
If you dive
Head first, to the right side of the bag and graze it, its different
Formerly ucla13_usc9
I want it to last long enough
for the announcer to mention Schlitz and Giggles one more time.
that should be a prize
a $5 gift card to Shiltz and Giggles. Winner has to get themselves over there…
