Bruins Look For One More Win In Los Angeles Regional

Amaral and his team-mates are shooting for one more win. Photo Credit: Alexa Rae (Flickr)

Beau Amaral and his Bruins (45-13) are just one game away from a date in the NCAA Super Regional. Last night CF Amaral did his part in chipping in during Bruins' 6-3 victory over the defending National Champions LSU Tigers. Tonight the Bruins look for one more victory as they take on UCI, who just closed out the defending National Champions LSU Tigers earlier this afternoon by a score of 4-3.

It's a Sunday which means Rob Rasmussen (9-2, 2.89 ERA) will get the start for our Bruins. Hopefully Rob will put together another consistent outing and continue to get run support from his team-mates, enabling him to join Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer in the 10 win club this season.

The game will be televised live on CST (Cox Sports Television) and will feature a live video stream on ESPN3.com. The first pitch is scheduled for this evening at 6:00 pm PST. You can also follow along with GameTracker or get updates on Ryan's UCLA baseball twitter. So might as well thread this as our game thread with updates, thoughts, analysis and anything else.

GO BRUINS.

IN HONOR OF JACK
A circular black patch with the initials “JG” adorn the left sleeve of UCLA’s uniforms, in honor of the late Jack Gifford. Among the program’s most loyal and passionate supporters, Gifford played for UCLA alongside former head coach Gary Adams in the early 1960s. Gifford, who passed away on Jan. 11, 2009, and his wife Rhodine generously funded the construction of UCLA’s state-of-the-art hitting facility. Named in their honor, the Jack and Rhodine Gifford Hitting Facility stands 23-feet high and spans 10,500-square feet.

Pac-10 score update

Softball: Arizona defeats Tennessee 5-2, and will meet the Bruins in the championship round starting tomorrow

Baseball:
WSU 7, Arkansas 1 (Bot. 5)
Fl. St. 5, Oregon 3 (Bot. 7)

Other: Looks like Fullerton is going to play Minnesota for the super regional bid.

by UCLA Band ' on Jun 6, 2010 6:53 PM PDT reply actions

This is why I hate the bunt.

We’re just giving up the middle of the lineup with this strategy. You give up the #4 hitter by bunting the runners to 2nd and 3rd, they walk the #5 hitter and set up the inning-ending GIDP. Let the middle of the lineup swing the bat. The fact that Pettis is getting hit hard and just hit a batter makes it worse.

Ryan may disagree with me, but when you have 1st+2nd and 0 out and the middle of the lineup coming up, you should plate more than a run.

by bruinhoya on Jun 6, 2010 6:53 PM PDT reply actions

To their defense

Uribe hit a line drive to the 2nd baseman last time, against the same pitcher. So having 2 guys in scoring position without the walk, perhaps the bases loaded with no outs with an error, with the #5 hitter up is basically the same thing.

I like the aggressive demeanor, but its an aggressive-conservative call if you catch my drift

One AB is a small sample size.

On aggregate you will score more by giving away fewer outs.

by bruinhoya on Jun 6, 2010 6:58 PM PDT up reply actions

And the fact that Uribe hit a line drive is the key point.

Line drives are a much higher % of being hits than grounders or pop-ups or fly balls.

this possibility always amused me in football—if a RB breaks a record and then loses yardage on the next play.

by bruinhoya on Jun 6, 2010 7:12 PM PDT up reply actions

That happened to Barry Sanders

He hit 2000 yards. Then lost like 3 yards on the next play. And then got back to 2000 yards the next play.

I remember the Pacific 8 and didn't like the idea of going to the Pac-10.

I really don’t like the idea of a half dozen southern schools coming into the conf. Kinda messes up the rivalry thing. I would prefer Utah, Boise St, Colorado, etc.

by LongtimeBru on Jun 6, 2010 7:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Well for most of the season

It’s the Pac-8 + a game against OK or TX every year

by UCLA Band ' on Jun 6, 2010 7:18 PM PDT up reply actions

In basketball, you'd have 14 games in division, and 8 against the other division.

Then there’s the conference tournament…24 games in conference. Not much time for the preseason.

My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.

by BamaBruin on Jun 6, 2010 7:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Would you have a once around with out of division?

Then Home & Home in division? That would seem logical

Formerly ucla13_usc9

I would guess only playing half of the other side every year

Home and home in the division, plus 4 games against the other division, plus a Big East-size monster tournament (3-5 games, depending on seed)

Formerly ucla13_usc9

Pac wouldn't take BYU

Because of the religious aspect, the “no games on Sundays,” and it’s not a research institution.

by bruinhoya on Jun 6, 2010 7:19 PM PDT up reply actions

And the fact

That BYU and Utah would lose around 5 NCAA teams, and attract no additional markets

Formerly ucla13_usc9

If you're gonna bring Utah schools in

I see no reason why you can’t bring Texas schools in.

by Tydides on Jun 6, 2010 7:19 PM PDT up reply actions

The rivalry thing is overstated anyway.

As long as the rivalries get to play each other at the end of the season every year.

by bruinhoya on Jun 6, 2010 7:20 PM PDT up reply actions

If we're going to seriously look at expansion

I don’t want to sell ourselves short by limiting ourselves to schools like Utah and Boise St. No offense to them, but they don’t bring a whole lot besides football. Most of the other schools mentioned in the Pac 10 + 6 plan do.

by Tydides on Jun 6, 2010 7:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Definitely better than a good number of Pac-10 teams.

And a finals appearance in the 90s. Plus, how can you turn down Keith Van Horn’s knee-high socks?

by bruinhoya on Jun 6, 2010 7:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe

But the bar is higher for newcomers. This ain’t charity, and new schools have to benefit us. I don’t see what Utah brings to the table.

by Tydides on Jun 6, 2010 7:24 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree with you if it's them vs. the TX schools.

It’s no comparison. But they’re not a bad program in the two big sports.

I like that first name. Didn’t Cody Keefer hit the walkoff dinger against Southern Cal?

We have two clutch Cody.

Yeah there is that

But it has the “I’m at a minor league game” feel. Cheesy. But yeah, errors definitely abound.

Ahh world cup commercials!

Can’t wait! I’ve printed out the TV schedule and highlighted the games I must watch!

by freesia39 on Jun 6, 2010 8:36 PM PDT reply actions

Well I'll just be pleasantly surprised if they win

They’ll hold serve and win last 2, but not as hopeful with England game.

by linkbruin on Jun 6, 2010 8:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Nah

England is having some trouble too. I think we have a great chance!

by impaulv on Jun 6, 2010 8:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I have all the US Games

plus all the South Korea games. I also will pay attention to Brazil vs Ivory Coast, although it depends on Drogba’s health. Isn’t Ghana decent also? Ghana vs Germany should be good, although I don’t know about the European teams playing outside of Europe.

by freesia39 on Jun 6, 2010 8:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Don't forget

Camerooooooooooooooooon. I am rooting for those guys for obvious reasons (along with US, Brazil and Argentina).

by Nestor on Jun 6, 2010 8:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Has Drogba's health been updated?

I thought he was just gonna be out, but I only heard something right when he injured himself.

Nothing certain that I have seen

His status still seems up in the air

by Patroclus on Jun 6, 2010 8:42 PM PDT up reply actions

I think he broke his hand or arm

and he’s getting surgery so he hopes he can play, but it’s his hand… I’ve been joking he doesn’t need it except if they play Argentina. (hehe)

by freesia39 on Jun 6, 2010 8:42 PM PDT up reply actions

It's Ivory Coast, not France

Drogba won’t be having to use his hand

I’m by no means a soccer fan

But all of this hype has really made me anxious. Can’t wait for Saturday, hopefully that’s on your list!

Actually,

If your stride is incorrect, driving and sliding past the bag could save a fraction of a second

Eh

I’ve always understood the slide as a means to avoid a tag or break up a double play. You lose time 99% of the time.

If you dive

Head first, to the right side of the bag and graze it, its different
