The Den is planning to create memorial silicone wristbands (like the livestrong ones) for the late Coach John Wooden. They will be BLUE with YELLOW writing: "Coach John Wooden 10/14/1910 - 6/4/2010"

They will be sold immediately and throughout the year for $1, and all proceeds will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), which is the charity that the Wooden family has requested for donations.

Please send all shipping and large orders to wooden.wristbands@gmail.com We are accepting orders and preparing for immediate shipping once they arrive. We have also set up a secure payment plan through paypal.

Count me in.

Can you ship a few to Florida?!?!

by orlandobruin on Jun 6, 2010 2:53 PM PDT reply actions

I don't see why not

These things are really light and shouldn’t cost more than a stamp to send.

I will know more when the ordering happens and wrist bands in.

Thanks for the interest!

by gbruin on Jun 6, 2010 3:43 PM PDT reply actions

I like the blue and gold as well

I’d buy black too without question, but for me, these few days have been more about celebrating his life and lessons than mourning his death. Maybe it’s because I kinda saw this coming (I had this discussion with a group of BNers at spring practice) or maybe I’m just wired weird, but I’ve been more amazed than sad these past days. To see such an outpouring of emotion and the incredible stories have put a smile on my face because of how amazing of a man he was.

Definitely

If they think black is the way to go, I’m still getting them. A great idea on their part.

Thoughts?

There have been many requests to change the colors and sayings. Many are saying that blue/yellow is a celebration of his life, which is what Coach would have wanted. What is everyone’s thought on that?

Also, we were hoping to make this ASAP, especially with graduation on the horizon. However, making wristbands with multiple colors not only increases the product time by a week, it also makes the costs double (and therefore reduce JDRF donation). Would you still be interested in a solid color wrist band with an engraving (not filled with color)? If so what color? Black as before or Blue (Yellow would be too much like livestrong).

by bk bruin on Jun 6, 2010 3:50 PM PDT reply actions

also....

with respect to the engraving? Is the proposed one good, or should it be modified to something like “Wizard of Westwood”? keep in mind that they is a limit on each line

I will be ordering tonight….

Personally, I’d favor Bruin Blue with something along the lines of “Thank you Coach”. Whatever you guys decide, how can we purchase these once created?

by Harsha on Jun 6, 2010 3:55 PM PDT up reply actions

I like blue

and if the engraving means more money for the JDRF, I’d have no problem with that too.

I like Blue and Gold

But would get one regardless of color.

by PEDbruin on Jun 6, 2010 3:58 PM PDT up reply actions

I think the simpler the better

I am leaning towards black (with white letters or not, doesn’t matter) because they would be a nice compliment to the blue and gold clothing I’m sure we will all be wearing. Sort of like our own memorial patch.

I would be perfectly happy with blue too, however. It’s a tough decision but you can’t go wrong either way. Thanks for doing this BK.

by Sideout11 on Jun 6, 2010 4:04 PM PDT up reply actions

thats what i was originally thinking

i know the alumni association has blue wristbands (at a few years ago they did) with “UCLA Bruins” on it. I’d hate for this to be another spirit wrist band. Black would stand out, especially with blue attire. Blue would blend too much.

GO BRUINS!!! CHEER LIKE CHAMPIONS!!!

by bk bruin on Jun 6, 2010 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I'll buy either color

but I’d favor a more simple engraving, in celebration of all that he’s done, like the “Thank You Coach” idea.

by UCLA11 on Jun 6, 2010 4:21 PM PDT up reply actions

You could always increase the cost to $2 each

If reducing JDRF donation is a concern. I wouldn’t mind paying an extra dollar.

Wrist Bands

I would prefer the Blue; however the color or the cost is really unimportant. It is the thought and the message that we remember Coach the man, what he brought to the Bruin family, fun, excitement, honor, trust, fairness. May God Bless him and his legacy never be forgotton.

by Blue Critter 2 on Jun 6, 2010 5:14 PM PDT reply actions

The colors will now be blue/yellow

we must remember him for the good memories and successes of his life, not for his passing. He will always be at UCLA in spirit, and black wristbands would not exemplify that.

Can I get 10?

A great gift for my Bruin supporters who may not be aware of this

by john4justice on Jun 6, 2010 7:43 PM PDT reply actions

The reason black and white works

at least for me, is that Coach did not just affect the lives of Bruins but of tons of other people too and it wouldn’t be fair to make this an exclusive thing. Indiana State colors would be just as appropriate. Coach wasn’t just a coach and he wasn’t just a Bruin. He was intergalactic.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

by tasser10 on Jun 6, 2010 8:30 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

i agree...

but the wristbands must also be marketable to the students as well. They were overwhelmingly in favor of the blue and yellow.

I completely understand the need for them nationally, but it shouldnt matter what color it is. It still still pays homage to Coach and supports a great cause in the process.

please send requests to wooden.wristbands@gmail.com

include your contact information and amount wanted. I will most like use paypal as the means of payment, in which case a minimum number will be determined (since paypal charges initial fee for the purchase) If orders of one were accepted, the amount sent to JDRF would be halved using the paypal method. This is not just about support Coach, but also about supporting a great cause.

at this time, no

however, because of the overwhelming response, we may do something with kids sizes too. It will all depend on how distribution goes. I just placed an order for 1000 yesterday, and its looking like i will need to place another order very soon. We will consider and let everyone know, but as of now, they will be adult sizes.

Let us know if that changes.

My 8 and 6 year olds are getting old enough to understand Coach’s principles (I’ve written Coach’s phrases on their lunch bags in the past, ala Walton) and I think they would get a lot out of it. It would be a great way to help pass Coach’s legacy on to the next generations.

I've sent you an email

and mentioned I don’t mind paying extra for shipping charges, so that the donation amount to JDRF stays constant.

by freesia39 on Jun 7, 2010 8:57 AM PDT up reply actions

Paypal fees

Since these wristbands are more of a donation to Coach’s charity with no intention to profit, perhaps it would be justified to “send money” through Paypal rather than pay for a purchase.

If you send money that is funded by your bank account or Paypal funds (as opposed to credit or debit cards) there are no fees to send money. People would just need to be careful to fund through their bank account. Just a thought to get more of the donation to JDRF.

https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/?cmd=_display-fees-outside

by truebluebruin on Jun 7, 2010 12:27 PM PDT up reply actions

credit/debit fees are as follows:

$0.30 per total transaction (unlimited # of bands)
$0.03 per wristband (at $1 each)

you can easily see the huge difference in amount made just by ordering 2 instead of 1

this and shipping were the reasons that a minimum amount is being considered

by bk bruin on Jun 7, 2010 2:01 PM PDT up reply actions

are the reasons (sorry….lack of sleep)

GO BRUINS!!! CHEER LIKE CHAMPIONS!!!

by bk bruin on Jun 7, 2010 2:09 PM PDT up reply actions

don't disagree

Oh, I don’t disagree at all about having a minimum order to cut down on the per wristband fee and make the effort to ship worthwhile (seems like a waste of effort to ship just one).

Just trying to see if we can cut out ALL Paypal fees by “sending money” since this is a charitable donation.

In any event, thank you very much for taking the lead on this and doing something great to honor Coach Wooden.

I'd love to

There is no greater time to make a lasting relationship between the students (the den) and alumni (BN). This will only enhance the future of both groups. I’m sure there are plenty of ways to make both better at what they do. Either way, the UCLA is the ultimate beneficiary.

Im in town (UCDC building) start June 20th and leave Sept 10th (just in time to catch the first home game!). Most, if not all, nights and weekends are free.

Advice needed:

There has been an overwhelming response from across the globe (yes, from bruins around the world) about ordering wristbands. Because of this fact, many of these will need to be shipped, and from my understanding, they cannot just go into a normal envelope (assuming they fit) since regular envelopes aren’t supposed to be chunky.

Does anyone have an expertise in this area (i.e. you run a ebay shop or the like), especially for mailing them off? I want to minimize the cost of shipping to maximize the donation.

Also, I was planning to use paypal, since it is easiest/safest method. For someone without a website, is the email billing feature the easiest to use?

Please contact me directly at ebigknife@gmail.com with all the advice/suggestions you care to share. I can never have enough!

Thanks for all of your support. I am a complete rookie at this but want to make a difference in the world and remember coach the right way.

GO BRUINS!!! CHEER LIKE CHAMPIONS!!!

by bk bruin on Jun 8, 2010 3:36 PM PDT reply actions

my suggestion

pass the shipping costs along to the customer. I can’t imagine anybody would mind. Especially when you consider the charitable purpose. The “If it fits, it ships” packages from the USPS come in a variety of sizes, and I’m sure you can find something that is perfect or near perfect for your purposes.

I know that Paypal has a function that allows you to send money person to person that does NOT charge you a handling fee. try getting in touch with Paypal and inform them of the charitable nature of your transactions and maybe they will waive the handling fees for all the transactions you are about to handle.

Thank you for doing this.

i know they have a non-profit feature

but i think that requires some sort of proof (IRS status or something). Maybe my recent contact with JDRF might help mitigate.

The fees arent a big cost unless you buy one at a time

GO BRUINS!!! CHEER LIKE CHAMPIONS!!!

by bk bruin on Jun 8, 2010 9:11 PM PDT up reply actions

bk few things

First, I am assuming you have all the orders at least in some form of excel sheet.

Second, I am also assuming you have recruited perhaps 3-5 volunteers to help you out packaging and answering emails.

Third, don’t hesitate the pass the cost of shipping on to folks. I think we will gladly do it.

Fourth, setting up a paypal account is a very good way to go. Not sure sure about the email billing.

IMHO I don’t think you need to “hurry” about this. Feel free to take your time and get it right. I know I sent an email but haven’t heard back yet and it is totally cool.

Also, of course feel free to use BN to organize your efforts. Feel free to start a new Fanpost if you want to put a call out to volunteers etc.

Thanks again for doing this.
