Current Bruins and Recruits Look To MLB Draft (Mon-Wed)
Tossed into the hectic week that is Super Regionals and finals is the MLB Draft, which will take place today, tomorrow and Wednesday. While no player is going to sign before the Bruins' season comes to an end, where they are drafted can give us an idea of whether or not to expect them back for the 2011 season. That also goes for the UCLA commits, who have the opportunity to sign professionally out of high school or attend UCLA, where they will be for three years.
The first round and first compensational round will take place today at 4 pm PDT, with rounds 2-30 beginning at 9 am tomorrow and rounds 31-50 on Wednesday, also beginning at 9 am PDT. Because any player who goes to a D-1 school must be in college for three years before entering the draft and the Bruins' array of young freshman and sophomore talent, they are primed for a big 2011 season. The bulk of the Bruins' core will be back next season, but holding on to a few of the guys and adding a good freshman class is always a bonus.
Here's the list of guys to watch and see where they land.
Current Bruins
- Garett Claypool, RHP, Sr.
- Blair Dunlap, OF, Sr.
- Matt Drummond, LHP, RS Jr.
- Niko Gallego, SS, Jr.
- Chris Giovinazzo, OF, Jr.
- Erik Goeddel, RHP, RS So.
- Matt Grace, LHP, Jr.
- Dan Klein, RHP, RS So.
- Brett Krill, OF, Jr.
- Rob Rasmussen, LHP, Jr.
- Justin Uribe, IF/OF, Sr.
Bruin Commits
- Brenton Allen, OF, Cerritos, CA
- Adam Plutko, RHP, Upland, CA
- Nick Vander Tuig, RHP, Oakdale, CA
- Zachary Weiss, RHP, Irvine, CA
Best of luck to all of them. We selfishly may want them to stay Bruins, but this is a chance for them to achieve what they have dreamt of since they were playing tee ball and running the wrong way around the bases.

Among the current eligible Bruins
Who do you think will go first? Is there a consensus?
Rasmussen or Klein for sure

Had heard that Ras and/or Klein could go in the supplementary round
That was a couple of months ago. Rivals.com has both players in their top-40 draft eligible college players.

Rasmussen is probably a better bet in the 2nd or 3rd round
The thing with Klein is where a team wants him. Some think he can be a really good starter, but others want him in the bullpen because they think he can fly through the minors there and be in their major league bullpen very soon. That’s caused him to really move up draft boards to the same area as Rasmussen.

On the subject of the MLB Draft
Is it just me, or does anyone else find consensus #1 pick Bryce Harper’s eyeblack to be a little out of control?

I've seen worse
Especially in High School. But when you hit 570 foot home runs, you can do whatever you want.

He wants to be Lattimer from the Program
Keep in mind he skipped 2 years of High School and would really only be a 17 year old junior in high school. I was doing stupid stuff after UCLA in my 20’s so while I agree he looks like an idiot I’ll cut him a little slack.
Rasmussen is the first Bruin off the board
- to the Marlins (2nd round)
Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf?

Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf?
Houston takes Plutko

Zack Weiss goes in the 10th round
and Garett Claypool goes in the 11th. Big jump for Claypool, who went in the 32nd round last year.
