UCLA Takes On Arizona In Clash Of The Titans In WCWS

BB Bates, Devon Lindvall, and Andrea Harrison looking to make history. Photo Credit: UCLA Softball (flickr)

B.B. Bates, Andrea Harrison and Devon Lindvall boosted the Bruins (48-11) this past weekend in Oklahoma City with power and defense from the outfield. Harrison has been on a tear all tournament. Bates had a huge 2 run HR against the Bulldogs and it was spectacular defense from Lindvall in outfield that helped preserved Bruins 5-2 win over Georgia. Now they meet their toughest challenge yet as they take on arch nemesis Arizona Wildcats (52-12) in the championships series.

This is essentially the matchup of UCLA v. Kentucky in basketball. Bruins have 10 titles and the (Arizona) Wildcats have 8. Although the Wildcats hold an 8-4 advantage all-time in the WCWS against UCLA. The Bruins lead the all-time series 68-51 and have won seven of the last 10 against the Wildcats. The best 2-3 series begins tonight. The first pitch is scheduled for 5 am PST. You should be able to track the action on ESPN2HD and online at ESPN3.com.You can also follow via Gametracker and live audio on UCLABruins.com. Let's hope the Bruins can bring this home.

GO BRUINS.

I watched the whole game v. UGA yesterday

Our girls can flat out mash.

Maybe if they wrap it up tonight we can move a couple over to Jackie Robinson to help the guys out in the Super Regionals.

Just tuned in...

ISP doesn’t support ESPN3, so searched for alternatives. Found a good link through channelsurfing.net. Requires a free 11MB download of a program named “veetle” (you can tell I’m not selling something by seeing my other links in past threads about finding alternative viewing options). Once you download it, the video quality is waaay better than anything justin.tv had for baseball.

If not for Langenfeld

we’re not in this game. That being said, that pitching change may have come a couple pitches too late

by LVBruin on Jun 7, 2010 7:55 PM PDT reply actions

easy to say now.

how often do teams pull their star pitcher with a lead in the 7th of the championship series?

by bruinhoya on Jun 7, 2010 7:55 PM PDT up reply actions

I have no idea

I haven’t been a big college softball watcher since I was a kid in Fresno (back when UCLA was the enemy, taking down my Bulldogs in three state NCAA finals)

by LVBruin on Jun 7, 2010 7:57 PM PDT up reply actions

something I don't quite get

I know it’s very important to keep a bull pen fresh for a series, especially going into the beginning of the post-season. But at the same time, this is it. This is the WCWS. The girls will be tired, but it’s all or nothing. Why didn’t our team put in a new pitcher to start to 7th? In the 5th and 6th they were making contact many, many times with the ball (just happened to be foul balls most often).

by MWbruin on Jun 7, 2010 7:55 PM PDT reply actions

because they don't use closers.

pitchers usually go the whole game unless they get rocked. softball arms don’t get as tired because the pitching is a natural motion, so arm fatigue is not as big of an issue. that’s why a lot of these girls can go two games in one day no problem.

by bruinhoya on Jun 7, 2010 7:56 PM PDT up reply actions

oh, ok

that helps explain it. thank you.

by MWbruin on Jun 7, 2010 7:57 PM PDT up reply actions

same reason why Jelly Selden or Keira Goerl went all game.

you go with your best. she just didn’t get it done. simple as that.

by bruinhoya on Jun 7, 2010 7:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Megan

Never seemed as reliable as Jelly or Keira. Those girls were machines. Megan is a great hitter but haven’t been impressed with her pitching. In fact she hasn’t started a lot this season. She doesn’t compare with those pitchers. They were legends.

by Nestor on Jun 7, 2010 7:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I am not comparing them as pitchers.

I’m saying you go with your best. Megan is the best on this year’s Bruin team.

by bruinhoya on Jun 7, 2010 8:00 PM PDT up reply actions

As 66 said

She was already hurting and struggling. At the very least KI should have had her pitchers warmed up. Clearly the person who is in right now is no slouch. She has a UCLA scholarship. So she is supposed to be one of the best.

This game and series is on KI if we choke like this.

by Nestor on Jun 7, 2010 8:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Macon got rocked in the first game of the WCWS.

That’s why Langenfeld came in in relief and got the W by shutting Florida down the rest of the way. She was good against Georgia and Hawaii too.

Arizona is a good team. They weren’t just going to roll over and die.

by bruinhoya on Jun 7, 2010 8:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Apparently not

Because we are going to choke it away.

by Nestor on Jun 7, 2010 8:07 PM PDT up reply actions

by HailRover on Jun 7, 2010 7:59 PM PDT reply actions

by Class of 66 on Jun 7, 2010 7:59 PM PDT reply actions

Then why leave here in there

This will end up costing the series most likely.

by Nestor on Jun 7, 2010 8:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Hey, we still get our at bat

you going negative mojo for softball too?

by LVBruin on Jun 7, 2010 8:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Easy to say that now. Hindsight is 20/20.

But I imagine you weren’t saying that when Langenfeld racked up four straight Ws in the previous games either.

by bruinhoya on Jun 7, 2010 8:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Macon and Kerr can both be good pitchers

but they are classic examples of when they get even slightly rattled, it starts to pour.

by truebluebruin24 on Jun 7, 2010 8:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Question

We took our the 1B player to keep Megan in and get a new pitcher correct? What are the 1B v Macon’s batting averages?

by Chris09 on Jun 7, 2010 8:07 PM PDT reply actions

For someone who follows the team

Does KI have a history of letting pitchers go too long and is she someone who likes to give her players every chance to climb out of a hole? If it’s a consistent thing with her that works often, but just bit us here, I can deal with it.

Pitch counts don't seem to mean much

Back in 2003, I recall Keira Goerl winning four elimination games in two days. She threw more than 200 pitches each day. Yet, even after tossing FOUR COMPLETE GAMES in two days, the very next day she threw a 9-INNING NO HITTER against Cal to take home the championship.

Admittedly that was the first softball game I've watched every inning of

but boy was that awesome
