UCLA Takes On Arizona In Clash Of The Titans In WCWS
B.B. Bates, Andrea Harrison and Devon Lindvall boosted the Bruins (48-11) this past weekend in Oklahoma City with power and defense from the outfield. Harrison has been on a tear all tournament. Bates had a huge 2 run HR against the Bulldogs and it was spectacular defense from Lindvall in outfield that helped preserved Bruins 5-2 win over Georgia. Now they meet their toughest challenge yet as they take on arch nemesis Arizona Wildcats (52-12) in the championships series.
This is essentially the matchup of UCLA v. Kentucky in basketball. Bruins have 10 titles and the (Arizona) Wildcats have 8. Although the Wildcats hold an 8-4 advantage all-time in the WCWS against UCLA. The Bruins lead the all-time series 68-51 and have won seven of the last 10 against the Wildcats. The best 2-3 series begins tonight. The first pitch is scheduled for 5 am PST. You should be able to track the action on ESPN2HD and online at ESPN3.com.You can also follow via Gametracker and live audio on UCLABruins.com. Let's hope the Bruins can bring this home.
GO BRUINS.

Just tuned in...
ISP doesn’t support ESPN3, so searched for alternatives. Found a good link through channelsurfing.net. Requires a free 11MB download of a program named “veetle” (you can tell I’m not selling something by seeing my other links in past threads about finding alternative viewing options). Once you download it, the video quality is waaay better than anything justin.tv had for baseball.

Andrea Harrison hits it right to the wall, almost clears it
instead, Megan is on 3rd and Andrea is on 2nd. 1 out
I can't say I've agreed with this ump's outside corner he's been giving all game
but I don’t watch softball, so maybe that’s a typical spot for a called strike
William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.
I don't love it
but it seems as if he’s been consistent, which is all that matters to me.

Yes! Yes! Yes!
Thank goodness.

Langenfeld strikes out
but Arizona is now 3 outs away from the game being over
Didn't we pitch by committee during the season?
"The true athlete should have character, not be a character."- John Wooden
Was looking up Wooden Academy and found a nice blog spot.
Looking down the blog there’s a lot of nice info on Coach’s connection to the softball team and nice photos and descriptions of the tributes paid to Coach at the WCWS.
Here’s the link: http://www.ncaa.com/blog/2010d1softball/
Go Bruins!
we have macon and kerr
but they are not nearly as reliable as Langenfeld
by truebluebruin24 on Jun 7, 2010 7:50 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm concerned about our pitcher
she seems to be losing her poise a bit in the last few innings. Way too many hit/tipped balls
If not for Langenfeld
we’re not in this game. That being said, that pitching change may have come a couple pitches too late
easy to say now.
how often do teams pull their star pitcher with a lead in the 7th of the championship series?
I have no idea
I haven’t been a big college softball watcher since I was a kid in Fresno (back when UCLA was the enemy, taking down my Bulldogs in three state NCAA finals)
something I don't quite get
I know it’s very important to keep a bull pen fresh for a series, especially going into the beginning of the post-season. But at the same time, this is it. This is the WCWS. The girls will be tired, but it’s all or nothing. Why didn’t our team put in a new pitcher to start to 7th? In the 5th and 6th they were making contact many, many times with the ball (just happened to be foul balls most often).
because they don't use closers.
pitchers usually go the whole game unless they get rocked. softball arms don’t get as tired because the pitching is a natural motion, so arm fatigue is not as big of an issue. that’s why a lot of these girls can go two games in one day no problem.
same reason why Jelly Selden or Keira Goerl went all game.
you go with your best. she just didn’t get it done. simple as that.
Megan
Never seemed as reliable as Jelly or Keira. Those girls were machines. Megan is a great hitter but haven’t been impressed with her pitching. In fact she hasn’t started a lot this season. She doesn’t compare with those pitchers. They were legends.
I am not comparing them as pitchers.
I’m saying you go with your best. Megan is the best on this year’s Bruin team.
As 66 said
She was already hurting and struggling. At the very least KI should have had her pitchers warmed up. Clearly the person who is in right now is no slouch. She has a UCLA scholarship. So she is supposed to be one of the best.
This game and series is on KI if we choke like this.
Macon got rocked in the first game of the WCWS.
That’s why Langenfeld came in in relief and got the W by shutting Florida down the rest of the way. She was good against Georgia and Hawaii too.
Arizona is a good team. They weren’t just going to roll over and die.
Langenfeld Has Been Pitching Hurt
Taped hamstring and finger blister.
Last game, KI asked the catcher whether Langenfeld was OK because she knew Langenfeld was so competitive she would not take herself out.
sjh
Easy to say that now. Hindsight is 20/20.
But I imagine you weren’t saying that when Langenfeld racked up four straight Ws in the previous games either.
Arziona swings at junk
but outs all the same
Macon and Kerr can both be good pitchers
but they are classic examples of when they get even slightly rattled, it starts to pour.
by truebluebruin24 on Jun 7, 2010 8:04 PM PDT up reply actions
Macons gets out of the inning
but bottom of the 7th coming up down 5-4
Question
We took our the 1B player to keep Megan in and get a new pitcher correct? What are the 1B v Macon’s batting averages?
I'm almost positive
that Macon does not bat
by truebluebruin24 on Jun 7, 2010 8:08 PM PDT up reply actions
Or rather, the 1B is now the DP because Langenfeld moved over?
I think. It’s been a while since I’ve worked a softball game.
For someone who follows the team
Does KI have a history of letting pitchers go too long and is she someone who likes to give her players every chance to climb out of a hole? If it’s a consistent thing with her that works often, but just bit us here, I can deal with it.
For everything UCLA baseball, visit my UCLA baseball twitter.
sadly i can't answer that question
but i think she doesn’t have a super fast pull on her players

For all you guys thinking this series is over...
We won the first game against Michigan a few years back and lost two straight.
This ain’t over.
oh man... stomach did a flip
when that ball disappeared from view for a second
KAILA SHULL, MAKING THEM PAY
5-5, 2 outs
Somewhere on an Arizona blog
Nester’s AZ doppelganger is calling out Zona’s coach for leaving Fowler in.
Game tying hit was not an error.
Ticked off the top of the glove with full extension. That’s a hit. The prior one, well . . .
for those not watching...
Shull hit one to right over the OF’s head… she almost made a great catch full extension, but it went off her glove. Now 2nd and 3rd with two out.
Going to extra innings
Thanks to a very important error from Arizona

alright lets get through this inning
and we can get to the heart of our order in the 8th
William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.
I wonder how close it would have been if we tried to bring
the runner in from third on the previous play?
it was julie burney
she isnt fast at all, but was taken out earlier in the game (meaning she couldnt go back in)
i dunno how deep their 3rd base bench is
GO BRUINS!!! CHEER LIKE CHAMPIONS!!!
well if we lose
it will be clearly your fault at this point … for not reinforcing the positive.

First arizona batter pops it right up
Langenfeld runs all the way from first to grab it, 1 oout
Programming Note
Don’t know if anyone mentioned it, but Fox Prime is going to show a replay of Wooden and Scully (from the Nokia theater from two years ago) tonight after the Dodger – St. Louis game. Just ignore Slimers, and it will be ok.
Base hit for Arizona
runner on first 1 out
Arizona's most dangerous runner
gets on first, but we get the lead off runner out at 2nd, 2 outs
walk puts runners on 1st and 2nd
2 outs still
i dont understand this umps strike zone
i cant tell the different between strikes and balls
GO BRUINS!!! CHEER LIKE CHAMPIONS!!!
that last pitch
was a strike most of the night up until now
3 strikes in a row for macon
and we get out of it!
Big K with the bases loaded
Now, let’s hope Megan can redeem herself.

I dont mind going into extra innings
i know softball has more endurance at pitching, but nearing 200 pitches can never be good
should be helpful for rest of series

I love the 8 clap the girls do at the end!
Pitch counts don't seem to mean much
Back in 2003, I recall Keira Goerl winning four elimination games in two days. She threw more than 200 pitches each day. Yet, even after tossing FOUR COMPLETE GAMES in two days, the very next day she threw a 9-INNING NO HITTER against Cal to take home the championship.
