Really interesting article.
I like that he points out our strengths and has real suggestions for more exposure. I especially like this line:
“In the past decade or so, the Pac-10’s inclusion on the popular pregame program has largely been limited to whatever Shelley Smith was reporting out of Pete Carroll’s camp.”
Guess we’re not the only one who noticed ss’s limited coverage of our conference.
Go Bruins!
TV times and dollars for UCLA
My understanding of college television just underwent a quantum increase.
The key is access to more money and media interest is access to more profitable television time slots. That’s noon, 3:30 and 8 p.m. but all times are Eastern Standard Time. And unless we want to show up at the Rose Bowl at 9 a.m. for a noon EST start time, one-third of the profitable time slots are gone. We do not play on the East Coast so it’s tougher to get into the noon time slot.
That leaves us fighting for the 3:30 EST national time slot with the entire nation. Harder to get in there. (My apologies to Mrs. Slotsbelcher, my senior composition teacher for use of a sentence fragment.) And then we only fight 3/4’s of the country for the 8 p.m. slot.
If nothing else, the Scott hire has gotten many to pay attention to the down and dirty nitty-gritty details of running a profitable football program.
