UCLA Is #2 On Kirk Herbstreit's List of "Most Undervalued" Teams

ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit has released his "Herbie" awards -- which is just a list of some of his favorite players, coaches and so on. UCLA doesn't get much attention on Herbstreit's list, other than ranking second on the list of "most undervalued" teams behind Michigan State.

The weird thing is: I don't even know what that means. Seriously, what's an "undervalued" team? Is that like being "under rated?" If anyone has a guess, let me know in the comments section.

Other than that team ranking, the only other Bruin mention in the Herbies is a nod to Rahim Moore, one of two starting safeties on Herbstreit's All American team. The Pac 10 as a whole gets many mentions, including both Rogers broters from Oregon State, Andrew Luck and Jake Locker on the QB lists and a few others. Oh, wait, Rick Neuheisel made the "Most Candid" list for coaches. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing, either.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

The kiss of death

Looks like Herbie is on the Bruins’ side… that’s never been a good thing

lol yeah....

Might as well give of the kiss of death like he did for the Miami game.

AGREED

I remember that before 13-9 he adamantly stated over and over again that there was NO way we could win. I think his main line of reasoning was that USC had not failed to score 20+ point in 53 games. We then went on to hold them to 9 points.

Of course, he did not make a single mention of this prediction at the end of the day.

note also

he has us as the Pac-10 sleeper team, and $C as “likely to disappoint”.

And I think undervalued is very much like underrated. If I was to take a stab at creating a distinction, I might postulate that we might be both underrated on an absolute scale of great to terrible, and undervalued in the sense that for a team that is not that bad in a division that is wide open, we are not being talked about as much as we deserve. On that distinction, a team like WSU could theoretically be underrated but not undervalued – they may be actually just “very bad” rather than “atrocious”, but either way they are not going to beat anyone and are getting exactly the right amount of buzz: zero. A team might be rightly ‘rated’ as excellent and the best team in a conference – say, Ohio State – but overvalued if 100 out of 100 pundits in the country is picking them to win the conference and discounting any value for other teams.

So, if I were to use those words, I might mean underrated on some ‘absolute’ scale and undervalued on some ‘relative to relevance within conference’ scale. But unclear whether Herbstreit has that – or any other – distinction in mind.

also

I might also use underrated to refer to specific aspects of a team or individual- e.g., UCLA’s offense is underrated, or Kevin Prince’s scrambling ability is underrated – while treating undervalued as more holistic.

Undervalued also conjures up betting images to me. Oregon is listed as +150 on one betting site to win the Pac-10. I think they are not overrated (I can believe that they are very good, and possibly the best team in conference) – but they do seem overvalued (the odds of them winning the conference are too short; perhaps they should be at +200). There is no value in betting Oregon, because even if they are most likely to win, they would not win a high enough percentage of the time if you ran the season 100 times to make those betting odds profitable. Hence they are overvalued but not overrated.

All-Uni team

Has Akeem Ayers and Rahim Moore on it as well

Not sure what “ALL-UNI TEAM: WHAT A COLLEGE TEAM SHOULD LOOK LIKE” is, but its lack of USC players is a good hint

LAX

Seriously what is up with LAX? Man, it’s terrible. I remember it was all right few years ago. It had some decent bars, places to grab coffee or quick grub before boarding. But it seems like it all went down to drain 4-5 years ago. Ugh.

LAX is a 3rd World Airport

in a 1st World Country. It’s a complete disgrace. People from Asia must be moritifed if LAX is their first impression of the States upon disembarking.

There’s no effective transfer method between terminals (apart from walking), and the food and shopping options are atrocious once you’ve entered the terminals.

Thanks to the fact that there’s no effective transfer method between terminals, in addition to having the distinct pleasure of walking (more often, running) between terminals to catch your next flight, you have to pass through security – AGAIN.

In complete seriousness, compare a world airport such as Hong Kong’s to LAX (or any major American airport, for that matter), and it is fairly apparent how completely behind the curve American infrastructure has become. Bangkok – a city that most would hardly classify as first world – has an aiport that is infintely better than pretty much any airport in the States.

Two reasons

1) Lack of money
2) Neighbors who put an end to most planned improvements

There is only so much you can do to an airport when you’re short on money and despite numerous attempts to modernize the place, the current renovation that isn’t even that significant is the first one of note since the international terminal went in prior to the ‘84 Olympics because the neighbors make it very difficult to renovate. Even the current renovation only got the okay after a lot of complaining because they agreed to limit the number of gates at the airport and switch some flights to John Wayne, Ontario, Burbank. The place is a dump, but they’re limited in what they can do without money or cooperative neighbors.

No airport is worse than Miami.

Home of the ’I’ll get to it when I get to it" workforce.

Agree

Miami is worse than Los Angeles. I hate that airport with the fire of a thousand suns. I had to transit there one time en route from Sao Paulo and I wanted to claw my eyes out with a fork.

Kirk Herbstreit?

Read “undervalued” as “overvalued”

and

“UCLA” as “u$c*”

Now it makes sense

Thanks so much Kirk

Undervalued and a sleeper. Uhhhhhhh, I guess I’m ok with that. I’m still pissed at his comment mentioned above, his prediction of $C steam rolling through the PAC 10, especially us. F* him.

I actually agree with him as us being a sleeper. I feel this is going to be different this year. How can so much talent on the field not produce something CLOSE to special!? Nobody answer that.
