First Road Trip Of The Year: Open Thread For Bruins In Manhattan

Just a few things that maybe someone can help me with. I will be taking off Thursday morning for Manhattan, Ks. I know that there will not be a Bruin Bash(bummer) and that most travelers will be staying in Kansas City, is there anybody making the trip that I may be able to tailgate with before the game(I will be solo).

Also, does anyone know where the bruins will be lodging at and what time they will arrive at the stadium Saturday morning? I would like to be the welcoming committee. Can someone help?

GO BRUINS!

UPDATE (N): Might as well make this an open thread to discuss among BNers who are making the trip. GO BRUINS.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Going out Thursday night

Gonna be a fun trip. Went to Lawrence as well back when we played KU. Make sure you check out Strouds, one of my favorite places to eat for Football trips

Going out thursday night as well

Never been to Manhatten but did go to Lawrence last time too. Going to actually be headed there after our game to watch them play North Dakota State at 6 which should rap up a great day of college football.
We are staying in KC on friday night and driving up early in the morning, so I am not quite sure what the pregame festivities will be for us. Would also be interested in being part of the welcome crew as well.

You guys should recommend this post up

So you can keep discussing it open thread all week. You can then unrecommend it next Monday.

If you like Barbeque,

hit Oklahoma Joe’s or Fiorella’s Jack Stack on Friday Night. (The lamb ribs at Fiorelli’s are absolutely sublime.)

Going out Friday morning....

and arriving in Manhattan Friday night. My wife grew up in Junction City and Manhattan so we know where to hang. My first trip was in the dead of winter and I got to see their BB team and Michael Beasley take apart the Aggies. Looking forward to nice weather this trip.
Head to Aggie town for the eateries and bars but ditch the Bruin gear or be able to fend for your life. Go Bruins!

We will be there

We are staying in Junction City. Where would you suggest there or in Manhattan to have dinner and some bars too? Thanks!

Recommendations from the Wife....

According to the little woman, there aren’t any decent places to eat in Junction City so you are better off in Manhattan. This weekend is Family reunion weekend at KSU so the place will be packed. Give yourself plenty of time to eat or if someplace takes reservations go that way. Here are some favorites of our. Some are in Aggieville some aren’t.

     Little Apple (beef)
     Coco Bolas (Aggieville)
     Hibachi Hut (Aggieville)

Here’s a great place for Breakfast, no reservations though, Early Edition. They have a couple of places around town. Look up their location and be prepared to wait. The wait will be well worth it.

Thank you!

and thanks for clearing up the Aggieville thing! GO BRUINS!!!

Second the vote...

…for Little Apple. Went there back in my undergrad days, (was representing UCLA In the national college bowl tourney) the garlic mushroom appetizer was phenominal.

Just to the east of Manhattan Ave, on Bluemont. Not easy to see but it is right on Bluemont.

I-70 a toll road in Kansas

Coming from Kansas City, will we have to pay a toll for traveling the I-70 in Kansas? How much? Both ways?

by UCLARob619 on Sep 2, 2010 10:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Only part is the toll road

Starting out it’s free, then once you’re a little ways out from KC you’ll find the toll both to get your ticket. You’ll be on it for about 50 miles, then the turnpike heads south toward Wichita as a different number, and you’ll stay on I-70 toward Manhattan. Your toll will be $2.50 each way.

WARNING to you and all SoCal visitors – Kansas cops like giving speeding tickets if you’re doing much more than 3 or 4 over the limit. I found this out first-hand when I first came here.

Thanks for the info

I could never figure what the toll was going to be from the Kansas Toll website. It was confusing as hell. I’ll be leaving with plenty of time to tailgate so I won’t run into Johnny Law.

Is it really like that?

Do we seriously have to ditch the bruin gear?

Not hostile at all.

The KSU fans are some of the nicest people I have encountered. They’ll give you some good hearted s..t but nothing vicious. At last years game, I went to a big KSU Alumni party all geared up and I was well received. I took some flak as could be expected but all in good fun.
The new President of their University gave me a little heat but all and all wear your Bruin gear proudly.

From my point of view, there are a$$holes everywhere

Yes, there will be some jerks but I don’t think you need to be worried about your gear. I pray you don’t need to worry, that kind of crap embarrasses me.

Look at the SE corner of campus and then cross the street. Varney’s has a big sign and they’re at the west end of Aggieville.

Aggie Town

Years ago the Wildcats were known as the Aggies. The area near campus where all the restruants and bars are located became known as Aggieville. The name has stuck till this day.

www.Aggiville.org is the official website for the merchants and shops. Check it out. Lots of good places to eat and drink.

Question about Parking and Tailgating

Hi all,

I’ll be staying in KC and driving out with my dad. Used to the drive since we drive from San Diego to the Rose Bowl each home game. I know we take the 70 to the 177 North and then the 24 turtle creek and exit or turn on Kimball (hwy 408). Question is…Where do we park? All the grass areas? Will it be obvious? Any suggestions? Plus we know about bring cups for the beer. We will be there 3 hours before game time. Thanks and Go Bruins!

Parking Lots

There are hugh parking lots aeound and near the stadium. Plenty of paved parking not like the Mausoleum. Just make sure you are there early as they fill up quickly with tailgaters.

by Twothphry on Sep 1, 2010 10:06 AM PDT up reply actions

Not Turtle, it is Tuttle

I know, I still screw it up occasionally and I cross it very day on the way to campus.

Couple more eating suggestions....

These are from my son-in-law who attended K-Stae and lived in Manhattan. Both are in Aggieville. Try the So Long Saloon or Willie’s Bar & Grill. Both are suppose to have good burgers. They are small places so give yourself plenty of time before the game.

by Twothphry on Sep 1, 2010 10:08 AM PDT reply actions

+1 for So Long Saloon

Avoid the tacos (I made that mistake once) and stick with the buger, bison burger or chicken and you’ll be in good shape. I love the fried pickles.

is actually off of Seth Child’s on the west part of town, not aggieville. Good place to eat though.

One of the Barbeque places, or an 810 Sports Bar, or someplace out at Legends (near the race track)???

C’mon, guys! (I’ll bake something, too, if you want.)

Will Do, N.

Here are some possibilities, just off the top of my head:

Fiorella’s at the Country Club Plaza, also in Overland Park, KS
Oklahoma Joe’s in KC, KS
Chappell’s, KC MO
810 Zone, in Leawood, KS & also at the Plaza
75th St Brewery, KC, MO
Johnny’s at Power & Light (The newer party zone around Sprint Center, which also has the College Basketball Experience, which I STRONGLY reccommend seeing, if you have time.)

Input, more (and better) suggestions and feedback are most welcome here, folks.

I'd prefer not too far east of downtown, personally.

Don’t know who has good food beyond 810 Zone – theirs is good, if there is better food elsewhere, I’m all for it. Lots of TV’s is of course good – somewhere that has enough that those that wish to can watch the Royals, while we (hopefully) can watch the Arizona/Toledo game that starts at the same time. I can find my way to something near downtown if that works better for Bruin15…since I don’t live/work in the KC area, I don’t really know what the options are.

Sure!

Pick a place near downtown since I am flying in from ca that day. Yes pick a place with good BBQ but not too crowded. Otherwise any of rhe choices is fine with me.

Bruingirl -

I’m fine with whatever you pick. From my imperfect knowledge of KC geography, it sounds like Johnny’s is the best option for Bruin15. There’s nothing at the Sprint Center tomorrow night, so parking won’t be tremendously horrible, though I’m guessing on a Friday night in that area it may not be simple or cheap, either.

I'm stuck in an office in wicked Los Angeles

And my jealous soul is seething over all of these great posts from Manhattan. Reading them makes me feel like I am almost there. Collectively, one gets a sense of the thrill of going to KSU for the game. Thanks, your words tell us so much!

I guess it could be worse. I could be stuck in an office in Oklahoma City, ya know. Or I could have a degree from southern cal.
