How tough is our schedule--check out the USA Today coaches poll!
Interesting piece in USA Today. The USA Today board of coaches has come out with their Top 25 preseason poll. The board is the real deal of coaches consisting of 59 head coaches including Urban Myer, Chris Peterson (Boise State), Jim Harbaugh and the like.
Alabama is ranked # 1 but the biggest takeaway I got from the article is how utterly implacably tough our schedule is. The Top 25 list include Texas (# 4), Oregon (# 11), and Oregon State (# 22); all of whom we play. But the sidebar is that other teams who got votes to be in the Top 25 include Houston (76 votes), Arizona (65 votes), Stanford (41) votes, Washington (26 votes), and Arizona and Cal (6 votes).
Thanks to Karl Dorrell, we got no votes.
This means in our 12 scheduled games, we are playing 9 teams which were either ranked or got votes from serious college football coaches to be in the Top 25. And the bad news is southern cal, who has owned us for the past decade, except for 13-9, can’t be in the Top 25 rankings because they were bad thanks to (oh, I can’t even start to list the malefactors—there were just too many members of the conspiracy).
If you toss in southern cal, which you have to, our 12 game schedule includes 10 opponents, who have owned us or are ranked by serious coaches as being better than us.
Gonna be tough. Just don't give up!
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Don't forget Houston at #27.
That means 10 out of our 12 opponents are either ranked, received votes to be in the top-25, or were couldn’t get votes because they finally got caught cheating their asses off over the last decade.
Thanks for the catch--made the changes

ha!
The only “heroic” thing in my life is from the perspective of my 5 year old when I save him in some Wii station game.

"serious coaches"?
The fact that a team like Arizona State, that finished in 9th in the Pac-10 last year and are widely projected to finish in 9th again this year, received any votes calls into question just how “serious” the voting coaches are.
That one made me wonder too.
Then again, their 4-8 record last year sure was impressive.
In the immortal words of the pin I got while an undergrad: Roses are red, violets are blue...f*** $C.
ASU
ASU did play tough on the road against a beloved SEC team. Perhaps that’s the only ASU game some of those voters saw from last year. (yes, I’m being serious)

Urban Myer ain't serious?
But I do see your point. The truth is there is a lot of guessing going on and at the end of the season, it isn’t going to look like the preseason guesses, er, I mean poll. Like I say—don’t give up in part for the reason you express; as to some of these picks, they can’t be serious. But others are serious as a heart attack.
I love our schedule.
I like the fact that we’re scheduling tough. Isn’t there a stat somewhere of UCLA being one of a very, very few that has never scheduled a non-FBS opponent?
One of three
Starting in 2011, UCLA will be one of only three schools (others being Notre Dame, $C*) to have never played a non-FBS opponent as UW has Eastern Washington scheduled.

+1
Bring ‘em on. The only way we are going to get better is to play good teams. The only way we will be able to judge our progress is to play good teams. I am sure we will get our hynies handed to us once or twice, but that’s part of learning. I am just looking forward to seeing improvement and some excitement on the field.
Go Bruins!!!!!
Hmm
Don’t see how I can blame Dorrell for us not getting votes 3 years after he was fired, but I get your drift :-)
Really looking forward to seeing what our team can do against all these good teams, especially with the harsh away schedule. I think that a 6-7 win season is a reasonable goal. 8 would awesome :-)
Sure we can blame Dorrell
Considering he cratered our program setting it back more than half a decade. We have done enough posts here backing that argument up. You can look them up.
