So one of my college roommates is the new head cross country coach at Oak Park high school, and every once in a while I go out to practice just for fun, and see how he is doing. Well yesterday was kind of cool because, as we were standing around talking while the kids were off on a run, while watching the football team warm up and such, one of the ladies I was talking to said that her neighbor Skip Hicks comes out to help with the football team a few times a week after he is done with his work day. Which I thought was pretty cool, but did not think too much of it at the moment. But about twenty minutes later after my buddy and were coming back up to the track and football field, I saw a big dude getting out of a Benz (which had Texas plates and a UCLA alumni plate frame), I was like wow, that has to be Skip, which of course it was. I must say the guy is still built and looked like he could still play.
I wanted to approach him and tell him how big of a fan I was and all the memories I have of him, especially his first carry back after (I think blowing out his knee) against Oregon when he just blew up a defensive back on his way to a 60 yard touchdown at the Rose Bowl. But decided not to cause I guess I did not know what he would think about a guy in little running shorts telling him how awesome he was. Maybe another day though. But I thought it was really cool of him to help out his local high school and lending some knowledge to some kids about football in his spare time. It speaks volumes to him as a person and I thought it should be recognized throughout the Bruin family.
