BN Gameday: Stanford Pre-game Thread

Going to need these guys today. Photo Credit: Telemachus

Our game is a nationally televised one on tWWL. Carter Blackburn, Brock Huard and Mike Bellotti are going to be in the booth. They did the Kansas State game last weekend and thought Huard/Bellotti combination was pretty good. I particularly appreciated both of their commentary on our defense. Will be interesting to see what they have to say today (btw Bellotti and Neuheisel have become close despite their intense rivalry dating back to Neuehisel's Colorado/Washington days). Anyway ... we have hours to go till the kickoff of our home season opener.

Mentioned in the roundup thread that we won't put up the game thread till 12:30 pm PST but might as well get started early ... because ... well it's apparently a "Monster" Saturday (at least that's what tWWL is telling us). Well not sure we have the OMG the greatest matchups evah docketed on the same day. Still there are same tasty matchups to keep us occupied through kickoff. It will be interesting to see how the Michigan-Notre Dame game turns out. There is also Ohio State-Miami, Oklahoma-Florida State and the Alabama-Penn State actions if you are into old school matchups. The Florida-South Florida game is already pretty "interesting" (given how Florida looked last week against a cupcake opponent). You can keep track of the full scoreboard here.

So if you are watching other games this am, share your quick takes, observations or pre game nervous musings, here is our open thread. Have fun.

GO BRUINS.

Leaving for the Rose Bowl in an hour

Hoping to see a lot of fans in blue. Years past a loss has really discouraged fan support, but it is the first Pac 10 so hope everyone comes out!!

The real USC is handling Georgia right now

Georgia struggling to make anything happen on either side of the ball….

USC / Georgia games always low scoring

well, except for last year. We’re missing Green something fierce, though. Murray has looked real good for his first road game as a freshman QB; hasn’t made mistakes. We just haven’t had help anywhere else.

That fumble on the 1 by Ealey didnt help, either.

by CAJason80 on Sep 11, 2010 11:53 AM PDT up reply actions

right

Georgia D has stepped it up; but that fumble undid everything.

Gators are lucky it is tied.

B.J. Daniels (USF QB) threw a pick right before the end of the half and the Gators promtly got 7 to tie.

This day is getting off to a bad start for me

MTSU is a decent team

They at least went 10-3 last year. Today, the Gopher defense has given up 440 yards and 41 points to South Dakota, its been painful

Good Omen

We are on our way to CA — driving toward Amarillo where we’ll spend the night.

Jen is driving, I’ve got the Slingbox running so I can watch the OhSU v. Miami game — don’t care who wins, don’t like either.

Anyway, just saw a BLUE AND GOLD oil well!!! All the rest are rusty and dirty. Not the Blue and Gold.

Means something to me. Good omen. Go Bruins!!!!

Michigan tries a two QB approach

QB #2 immediately throws a pick setting Michigan up for an easy score. Not saying this is what would happen if we throw Brehaut in, just saying, THE TWO QB THING ALMOST NEVER WORKS.

Yup, it’s an epic fail before you even try.

by Bruin'96 on Sep 11, 2010 1:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I always use this as a counter-point

UGA Football, 2002:
David Greene was spelled by DJ Shockley in 10 games, who was a RS Fr at the time.

UGA won the SEC that year, and the experience that Shockley got was invaluable in helping him lead UGA to the SEC title again in 2005 following Greene’s graduation.

It’s basically the only example of successfully spelling quarterbacks I’ve ever seen, however.

Michigan did ok with Brady-Henson too

But those were both grooming situations. Its different than playing two similar qbs.

Go Bruins!

Very psyched for tonight. I spend the rest of the year looking forward to Saturdays in the fall. Nothing in the world like it… getting off the freeway (mountain/seco exit…)… rolling through the neighborhood peppered with ucla banners and $25 driveway parking… cruising into the stadium lot… walking past the A gate, on to the grass, wading through a sea of Blue and Gold, dogs grilling, cold beers being passed around… students with painted faces reminding me of myself and my friends thirty years ago (yeah yeah youngsters, there are a few of us veterans on your site here…) balls flying through the air…. stroll past Matt and Wayne doing the pre-show (they still out there this year?)… meeting fellow lifer bruin fans at the pre-game party in the tent… listening to the band play a song or two for the crowd…. then making our way into the stadium with its majestic arches and sturdy walls, through the cool damp air of the tunnel that opens up to the epic sight of the rose bowl on game day, fans and players filling it with excitement… sitting down with my wife in our seats, saying hello to our bruin fan friends we only see five or six teams a year, but who, like us, are always at these game, hanging on to our optimism to the last possible minute…. then settling in beneath a beautiful Pasadena evening sky in the greatest college football stadium in the country full of hope and belief that the Bruins will shock the world and rise to the occasion. Prince injuries, yeah yeah… revamped last, uh huh… last week’s game, whatever… trad med declaring us doa, blah blah…. don’t hear it, don’t care, not on game day. No better way to spend a Saturday. Kickoff in six hours. Life is good again. GO BRUINS.

Colorado is a mess

When they join the PAC-10, they’re probably the second worst team next to Washington State. Keep in mind, things have gotten so bad there that Dan Hawkins had to bench his own son to try and placate the fan base.

I would really like to see us break some long runs. It’s been a while since someone has gone through the hole and just run away from everyone else.

We have that speed with JetSki and Jones. Would really like to see them get some very big runs.

Also, seeing a lot of very good young QB’s. Love for Prince to take his place as an up and comer.

Can clearly see why Rodriguez replaced Forcier. Not that Forcier isn’t very good — but his replacement is great. That’s what QB competition can do.
