CRN w Dan Patrick: Analyzes Pac-10 QBs, Talks "Scheduling Philosophy"
CRN thinks Jake Locker and Andrew Luck are two best QBs in the conference. I would put Nick Foles up there as well given how well he fits in Arizona's spread but those two choices makes a lot of sense. I am sure Hello Kiffin will perceive this as some kind of slight against Matt Barkley.
CRN also mentioned he is not a big fan of scheduling tough games early on. I can't really disagree with him there either. I think UCLA's scheduling has not been helpful in terms of rebuilding the program.

I don’t deny that tough scheduling has not been helpful with rebuilding the program but tough scheduling is not helpful in any situation anyway, not only with rebuilding.
I do not agree that tough scheduling doesn't help in ANY way.
Oftentimes playing a tough OOC schedule toughens the team up for conference play. Case in point: UCLA in 1983. Went 0-3 in OOC with losses at UGA, Nebraska, and BYU at home. Went 6-2 in conference and drubbed Illinois in the Rose Bowl.
As a fan, I would rather see us play Texas than San Jose State. A home and home with Texas or Nebraska can also help with recruiting (i.e., “look were you will be playing”; “we are not afraid to schedule anybody”).
I see Nestor’s point though. Blowout wins against lesser competition sometimes create more of a buzz around a program in a recruits mind that a tough loss to a difficult team (i.e., Texas). They can also create momentum going into conference play.
Also, playing tough OOC schedules can result in injuries, which affect future games (i.e., Prince at UT). Playing cupcakes allows you to rest your starters, which keeps them more injury free for conference games and also allows backups to get experience.
national exposure
UCLA @ Texas: National game on ABC
UCLA @ San Jose State (etc): Fox Sports Prime Ticket
It’s tough to schedule tough opponents when trying to rebuild, because 6-6 and a bowl game is on the face of it more impressive than 4-8 with 2 tough OOC losses. Once you are at the top end of the conference, I think there is benefit to scheduling at least one or two tough opponents. $C has definitely benefited from this. VA Tech and Boise State are giving themselves an opportunity to be considered a national title contender by scheduling each other, when otherwise going unbeaten would be no guarantee of a BCS spot. Once CRN has us competing for the Pac-10 title, national exposure games and resume enhancing victories will be good for us (and revenue is always good…). Right now, you have to chalk up our OOC schedule to “character building”…
