2010 College Football Kickoff: BN Special Open Thread
Well here we go. We are less than 2 days away from the kickoff of our Bruins' 2010 season but the college football madness gets started tonight. It sounds like number of you will be watching the games this evening. So we might as well get a Thursday night open thread started.
There are number of games on the docket tonight. You can see the full lineup over at WWL. As mentioned this am USC-Southern Miss game is going to be an interesting one. Steve Spurrier was a legend in Florida but he really hasn't been able to convert USC into an upper echelon program in the SEC (35-28 in 5 seasons). Should be interesting to see how he performs in his sixth season on Columbia. Nation's number 2 team - tOSU - also gets it rolling against Marshall tonight. I will be keeping an eye on that score as well.
Guess some of you will be staying up to watch Southern Cal. Not yours truly. Not interested in hearing the media waxing poetic about a slaughter over Rainbow Warriors. On paper that game shouldn't be close. Anyway, enjoy watching the games. This is your open thread to take in the games, post quick random musings, analysis, takes and links like this.GO BRUINS.

Let's start this thing off
with an absolutely incredible play from last year that ranks up there with some of the most athletic plays in UCLA history. Hopefully we can get some more of this, plus some more discipline for Akeem this year.

That picture can't be from today
I have spent a lot of time in Columbia and that picuture can’t be from today. Too many long sleeve shirts. Right now—its a humid, sweaty, sunny, hot early September 89 degrees.
Ugh, ya’ll!
Still love to play there--heat or no heat

Can we play South Carolina soon?

Three reasons
1) The stripes
2) The Grove looks like the best tailgate scene out there
3) Their co-eds

Can’t stand Reggie Bush or Mark Sanchez eye shades.
Boy, Miami's beating the stuffing out of Florida A&M

USC is using their size advantage at the WR position very well . . .
. . . against the undersized DBs of SoMiss. I hope the Bruins utilize their similar advantage over KSU undersized DBs this Saturday.
Football news ...
Mark your calendars – Sunday, Oct. 17, the first BCS Standings will be announced on ESPN.
Jeremiah Masoli ...
The NCAA has denied Mississippi quarterback Jeremiah Masoli’s request for a waiver that would allow
him to play immediately, meaning the former Oregon standout won’t be eligible until 2011.
BCS Championship ...
Ten different schools from five conferences have won the BCS Championship since 1998.
Last season ...
a near-record of 48.3 million fans attended games at the 630 NCAA schools (including postseason).
Last year's bowl games ...
host stadiums reached an 85 percent capacity with an average of more than 52,000 fans per bowl game.
UPSET ALERT!
Middle Tennessee State leading Minnesota 17-14, early second half.
Why is Minnesota playing AT Middle Tennessee?!?!?!
An upset by name, yes
but the Gophers were only favored by three so not much. MTSU returns a lot of a 10 win team from a year ago and Minnesota isn’t very good. At +3, I took the Blue Raiders in my betting pool.

To be fair, this will go down in the history books:
USC’s first offensive play of the Lane Kiffin era was a false start. That’s kinda’ funny.
Still, SC’s gonna’ roll Hawaii.
This game is very apt to turn out
just like Kiffin’s first game last year did against Western Kentucky- he won’t call off the dogs, and SC is going to have some absolutely eye-popping box score entries.
That’s just how Kiffin rolls, I guess.

As much as it sucks
the refs got that non-TD call right. A player is ruled down if any part of their body except their feet or hands touch the ground so even if his elbow didn’t hit, his forearm most definitely did.
What I don’t get is why Hawaii didn’t run it. The ref never said anything about charging Hawaii a timeout after that play so they still had one to call if they ran it and came up short.

True, but that might have become a new level of pwnership
Waiting to see a few new coaches show their inner “What’s your deal?!”
formerly bruinhoo
And according to the media
They’re projected to finish 5th in the WAC.
Hey guys
do you know if Davies went to SC practice last week? I’m not sure.

Best everything in the country
Why should be even play the games? Davie has already crowned their ass.
ABC just gave
Him a bonus for being a team player
Didn't we have a pitcher
who was drafted by the Yankees in the first round?
First TD for Austin
Former UCLA wideout/returner Terrence Austin just caught a 21-yard touchdown pass
yeah that doesn't seem right

Cant wait to see our speedy guys vs these clowns
Marvray, Pressley, Josh Smith
Could have used that mobile QB there
EGO TROIORUM MALLEUS SUM
Yeah, 13 straight games?
They lost to Arizona last year late in the seasons
EGO TROIORUM MALLEUS SUM
They are referring to season openers
That happens when you schedule Hawaii an the Sisters of the Poor, Virgina, etc
Anyone else
think that Matt Barkley looks a little like Ellen Degeneres?
Looks like a douche-bag
EGO TROIORUM MALLEUS SUM
Aaw... Kiffikins is letting the punter line up under center
And who is this in the game? Mister TroGan himself!

Best thing from this game
SSee has no defense!
Woo! A Markeith Ambles sighting!
Let’s go Trogans!
Good to see him drop the first wide open pass sent his way.

I think we should
change his name to Mark Shambles
Nah
A fake kneel down and bomb and high 5’s all around
One Blown reply
May not be enough. ABC will need to get a bad call to set up another score.
How unsportsmanlike!
Hawaii is still trying to score! Unbelievable.
Will Lamey bring
his illegement son back in?
would have made it a 10-point game?
Does Davies think Hawai’i could have gone for a 3-point conversion?
formerly bruinhoo
ffffffffffffffffffffff
refs throwing blocks on that play!
Magic
It was all in the “All American” hand off from Matty. Great coaching too.
Whatever happens, SC is not impressing anyone in this game.
They’re playing against Hawaii, and it’s their 3rd QB.
They should be blowing Hawaii out of the game like previous games against them.
$UC is baaaaack
Giving up 500 yards of offense against these guy. Do these announcers obsessing about the $UC offense see who they are playing???
$C got that motto
from TI, who ironically is BACK in jail. Kind of fitting.
Oh UCLA you sweet bitch, you've BRUINed me for anything else.
Davies the clown
Now he is obsessing about MIKE GARRETT!
Well Bob, actually Pat wasa big part of hiring the Kitten
Hearing Davies’ ‘though’ processes and lack of preparation is making me feel even more sorry for my Domer-alum friends. Jeeze, they had to go through this guy running their program?
formerly bruinhoo
Gonna make
the ol’ guy swim home in shark invested waters
The father said he's a good kid,
he was the one make the first mistake at Tenn.
And the kid said what are you doing, it is a violation.
The father said he didn’t know for have not been recruiting after 25 years.
"this is shocking"
“Monte Kiffin’s defense… and this is Hawaii’s 3rd quarterback… this is SHOCKING”
These announcers..
OMG they can’t decide what side of the fence to sit on. They change in mid sentence
Plane Ride home conversation
Monte to Lamey: get on the waiver wire tomorrow first thing!
"They're gonna get exposed now...
They’re back! Which is it!!!
In this game, Monte Kiffin
has taken the old cliche “I’ve forgotten more about (in this case defense) than you’ll ever know,” to a new ironic level.
"The yardage is pretty even"
Ya think? They pay these guys?!?!?
What else would you have expected from $c tonight?
I mean, this is the projected 5th place team in the WAC we are talking about.
formerly bruinhoo
Matt Barkley is the player of the game?
Over the best receiver in the history of the world???
did you see Matt looking for daddy?
Daddy is in Seattle now little Matty.
