It looks like Yahoo's Jeff Passan gets it
Jeff Passan wrote an article in Yahoo Sports about the Ray's difficulty in drawing fans despite their success on the field. Today, they gave away 20,000 tickets, one of which went to me, but alas we lost. Anyway, Passan wrote an article about which cities qualify as "baseball cities," and he included this gem in the middle of his article.
"Well, it’s grim. Chicago, perhaps, though the city’s North-South baseball divisions vanish for the Bears. While Minneapolis bought the Twins stadium, the outpouring of love for Brett Favre and the Vikings every Sunday usurps that for baseball. Los Angeles doesn’t even have a professional football team now that USC is on probation, and baseball finishes a distant second to Lakers basketball."
Nice work, Jeff. You surely understand the way things work at Figueroa JC.

Baseball a distant second?
Interesting that he says that since the LA/OC region has been the MLB’s best attended for the last 5 or 6 seasons. For the 2010 season, the Dodgers are 3rd and the Angels are 4th in home attendance. http://espn.go.com/mlb/attendance/_/sort/homeTotal
Perhaps now that Los Angeles is truly free of a pro football team, the NFL will finally grant it a legal one.
Oh UCLA you sweet bitch, you've BRUINed me for anything else.
I don't understand why people continue to fill Dodger Stadium.
It’s a nice park, and very convenient to get in and out of, but the product on the field is awful. And from this distance, there are no players who you would want to hang out with. And then there is the owner (or is it owners) who have turned the team into the west coast equivalent of the Washington Nationals. Yet the Dodgers still get 40,000 plus every game.
The Rays are the opposite of the Dodgers in every possible way. Clean ball park, zillions of people walking around sweeping things up. Drunks get policed quickly and quietly. The team is handled well and is obviously doing well. Yet the team can’t draw flies (unless they give away the tickets)
The Passan article was about what is a baseball city. I think Tampa/St.Pete is probably closer to shuffleboard than baseball or football.
I personally don't like going to Dodger Stadium
The most dangerous time to go Angel Stadium is to watch a Dodger game.

Wow, really?
I love the crowd and fans at dodger stadium. They are well behaved and it is kid friendly (IMHO). On the other hand, the team…omg.
Go Bruins!
Shuffleboard?
I hear that people in Tampa/St. Pete actually bet on lawn bowling outcomes.
Okay, I made that up.
There is great angst here in Geezerville
The lawn bowling place (arena, park, field?) has been off line for months getting re-grassed. When it was open, it was active. There were lots of people there, all dressed totally in white. It was actually kind of cute seeing the really senior seniors getting into it. I don’t know if they bet on the outcomes, but I wouldn’t be surprised.
What I hear
Here’s what I heard. Some St. Pete retiree doubled down on his wager on a lawn bowling game gone bad using one of his 401ks and lost it all. Bad news at the senior citizen’s condo complex or so I’m told. Good news—the codger’s 401k account consisted solely of Lehman Bros. and Enron stock.
I made all that up too.
