Matt Barnes arrested

As a UCLA fan and Laker fan I was disturbed to just learn that Matt Barnes was arrested in Sacramento on domestic abuse charges.  The story was just on KCBS Channel 2 News here is Los Angeles.  I will reserve judgement until the entire story comes out.........however it is never good when something like this happens.  I never like any of our former \ players, especially those that come from the "halls of Westwood" and are now with the local teams, to be involved in anything like this. Let's hope that Barnes gets it together, but it doesn't sound good.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Wow.

Man I hope it turns out that he didn’t do this. Not just because he’s a member of the Bruin family, but for his own family!

Go Bruins!

Girlfriend, not family, according to reports.

According to the times, ABC news has Barnes saying he was the victim but was arrested anyway. I guess we’ll see.

Go Bruins!

On a slight tangent

Don’t know if your avoiding capitalizing the name of LA’s largest newspaper was intentional or not, but I think keeping it intentionally all lower-case should be the norm here on BN…whenever we’re not just calling it the fishwrap. Goes along with u$c in lower-case, which (I believe) Fox71 was the first proponent of.

Roses are red, violets are blue...f*** $C.

Zero Tolerance Enforcement

I also think it wise to take a “wait and see” approach to the story.

There are police departments that take a “zero tolerance” approach to domestic violence. The beat officers have NO discretion as to whether to arrest if there is the slightest evidence of contact or abuse. If they come on a call and there is evidence of physical contact, they must make an arrest. Whether or not the arrestee was acting in self defense is sorted out later. End result. An arrest.

That seems to be the case in Barnes’ arrest. He too had injuries. See this report: http://www.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/22748484/24436111

Actually, we’ve seen this before in the cases of a certain brick layer who was arrested twice, once in a domestic situation, only to have both charges ultimately dropped.

I will be very disappointed if the charges are true.

PS. And, now, for an embarrassing admission. Every year I get “Emmy Screeners” from television production companies that want their shows to be nominated for Emmys. One was for a reality show I’d never seen — something to do with NBA wives. Barnes’ girlfriend was one of the principle characters. Barnes was shown as a very mellow guy and a good dad to the kids (at least on the episode I watched). And, no, I didn’t vote to nominate it. Yuk!

Respectfully disagree

Being from Northern California, I do have a few very good friends who are police officers in both the Sacramento Police Department and the Sheriff’s Department. I know from conversations with those folks as well as some of their colleagues (and another friend of mine who is a defense attorney up that way), that both of those departments do not have a “zero tolerance” policy on DV calls and that frequently officers go out to domestic disturbance calls and no one gets arrested at all.

While I certainly agree with you that there are departments that do have that policy, the folks up in Sac-town don’t, so I don’t think that’s a fair comparison for this particular case.

I agree with the “wait and see” approach, although regardless of who the aggressor is, I think it’s fair to say, on that particular evening (from the reported statements of both the alleged victim and Barnes) that the relationship was volatile that evening and perhaps a bit of counseling for the two would be in order. Just a suggestion.

My understanding from the articles is that he is due in court the coming week or so, so it will be interesting to see if the District Attorney files charges, what kind of charges, and the degree of said charges.
