[Updated] Lavin's Johnnies

Updated (BN): For those keeping track Lavin's Johnnies just got destroyed by Georgetown and have now lost 5 out of last 6.

We may be getting lucky to have another out of conference opportunity to make an impression  thanks to a senior laden St. John's squad.   They are 3-0 in the Big East with a RPI of 7.   Don't even take a Lavin coached team for granted that is the 4th most experienced in the country and has 5 senior starters.   That being said they could lose their next 7 games.

We will see soon if this team will be able to give us that out of conference opponent we might desparately need.   Oh by the way thanks Oregon State for hurting the Pac both out and now in conference.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Me watching the highlights last night on ESPN

“GO GEORGETOWN!”
“NOOOOOOOOOOOO WHY DID YOU LET THEM SCORE?!”
“oh good there’s 24 seconds left, COME ON GEORGETOWN”
“WHY WHY WHY!?!”
“AHHH OMG NOOOO”
“damnit, that win was very familiar to UCLA fans if you ask me…”

Surprise surprise

he got the Johnnies to play at a magical level…

Georgetown had just lost to Notre Dame so let’s see how good of a win this ends up being, considering the love for the Big East in the rankings.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

I mentioned the other day

that I can see us losing to the lizard — and it will kill me. (With our issues, I can see us losing to anyone.)

He has an experienced team that is playing to its ability.

We have an inexperienced, perhaps, more talented team that cannot play a complete game at a high level of effort, intensity and skill.

I really wish we were not playing them. It’s on thing to lose to Montana, but if we lose to the lizard … it’s just to horrible to contemplate.

this is the sad truth

We could very realistically lose a good number of games based on the way this team is playing.

Combine that with the recent injury to Lazeric, I have high doubts about our post season chances.

I can see us losing to the lizard .......

only if we wanted to prove Lavin correct when he said, towards the end of his time at Pauley that Westwood needed to lower its expectation and learn to take pride in perennial sweet sixteen NCAA berths, etc., achievements he compiled that nobody appreciated.

Notre Dame may not have been at the apex of its fabled football dominance the last two decades. But I don’t fault them for consistently trying hard to find the right person to once again lead the Fighting Irish back to its storied past. So after Lou Holtz, they sacked Bob Davies, Tyrone Whittingham, Charlie Weis consecutively. Of course the jury is barely impaneled for Frank Kelley. This one looks feisty, put up good fights, win or lose.

It is paramount that we operate that way too. Mediocrity is not the norm in NCAA athletics.

COACH would have frowned.

don't lose hope

just worry about 1 game at a time. The next one is the most important (in this case not a cliche @USC) If they can get that win then 1 game at a time we can play ourselves into the tourney. At 2-1 having played 3 of the top 4 teams in conference would not be such a bad thing.

Without Zeke it will be tough, but I think he will play but probably not score much. A limited Zeke is better than JA imo. And a limited minute JA is much better than a JA that plays alot of minutes. Zeke needs to play because JA I think is better without alot of pressure on him.

that's what I was going to say.

I’m not at all worried about St. John’s because we have a big enough challenge ahead of us with South Central. And, that in itself is a game we can either win or lose depending which one of our Jekyll and Hyde teams shows up.

$C's big man in Vucevic is pretty frightening

and from what I’ve heard, Fontan is a monstrous point guard, I don’t know if Zeke can keep up.

Are you sure he isn't a chip off that old Drago block ?

Both of them are so buddy buddy, and they are both from Serbia too.

The only thing we have going for us

is the long time for CBH to prepare. Otherwise, we’re toast in this game.

As for St.John’s…we will lose that game, simply because the lavinoma is a curse upon all that is UCLA. I hope the students let him have it at least, we’ll need to share a lot of info with the Den.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

I wouldn't say the only thing.

Joshua Smith, Reeves Nelson and Tyler Honeycutt at the top of their game can be a dangerous combination. That is why it is so critical we bring the correct Jekyll & Hyde persona. I would put Tyler Lamb against Fontan, if he gets the playing time that is.

"at the top of their game"

i.e., if they feel like showing up that day. Actually I’m not worried about Smith, he brings it every time. Nelson and Honeycutt…one pouts, the other acts too cool for school. If the stars align and there’s a solar eclipse, they decide to play hard…on the same day! But then, Anderson throws the ball out of bounds…

Funny, but too painful to laugh about.

JA cannot be on the floor during any critical moments. I see the improvement in his game, but not his ability to play under stress.

Can the Wizard of Oz give him something to take care of this?

I would think so too

Howland is cobbling together his " package " as we speak., with some rough edges to be ironed out as expected. These players learned too with every game they played, win or lose. By mid season, they should perform more consistently than now.

Just give it their best shot whoever they played.

by Htse005 on Jan 4, 2011 12:55 PM PST up reply actions

Consistency has not been a signature of the past few Howland teams.

As we say at the Seder “Why is this night different from all other nights?” I’m hoping the answer is “Because, this night, we play an all out 40 minute game. Because, this night, we are Barn Cats.”

I watched the game last night

I was stuck inside because of the snowstorm (complete with thundersnow, mind you) in NYC last night.

I was not impressed by either team, really. Georgetown did not look like a 20th ranked team at all. What UCLA will need to be careful about is turnovers. If we can score some from outside, this game is ours to win, especially at home. And they don’t have anyone that can stop Josh Smith either. That being said, never count out the Lizard for getting his team to play at a “magical level” for one game out of 20…

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

Thundersnow

We get that here from time to time. Very Himalayan cool!

As for the Lizards, they are one of those teams that can beat almost anyone, and lay an egg to almost anyone. The only thing consistent with Lavin is inconsistency. Still, and I know it’s wrong to feel this way, but we absolutely positively cannot lose that game.

The Only Thing Consistent is Inconsistency

Take that line out of this thread and you could be talking about us.

We have yet to play a complete game. We, too, can beat most anyone and lose to most anyone, too.

It is not wrong to feel that “…we absolutely positively cannot lose that game”. Losing to that poser is the same as losing to sc. It is not acceptable — and careers should be jeopardized for doing so.

it'll be a good/ interesting game

By the way – not sure which of your managers and editors to reach out to, but on Rumble in the Garden, we do “Five Question” exchanges, and I would love to get some input on the Bruins (and answer the burning questions you have about our current coach). My emails’s in my profile, hope to hear from you soon and set this up!

Picodulce

Glad to see you around BN.

Do you have a “current coach”?

You have an experienced, talented team — and some strong assistants. I’ll bet you guys would be great with a real head coach.

Or, are you all finding life dulce with the lizard leading your program? (Or just un pocito dulce?)
