BN Gameday: Stanford Second Half Thread

Fauria has been reportedly spotted in Palo Alto. (Photo by Bob Levey/Getty Images)

Well after first half in Palo Alto the Bruins are down by a score of 7-17 (boxscore). Bruins got the ball first and moved it down to Stanford's goal line in what was easily the most methodical drive of this season. Yet once we got near the goal line Rick Neuheisel's conservatism (running up the middle on essentially 4 straight plays) kept the Bruins out of the end zone.

Since then it has been an Andrew Luck show. He has found cure for aids and cancer. He has already come up with the design for the next generation of space shuttle. Oh and he mostly toyed around with the UCLA D in the long Stanford possessions.  Stanford has 17 points. That's because they just had 3 ball control possessions. They rolled up 200+ yards in those three possessions, converting 5 of 7 3rd downs, and never feeling any real pressure from Joe Tresey's vespa clowns.

The extreme optimists in us I can perhaps find a way to convince ourselves that it's worth staying up for this because our offense has been moving the ball and if not for a TO from Brehaut this game would be closer. My suggestion. Don't hold your breath. There is no chance that this garbage defense is going to give us a chance to win this game. That of course is on none other than Neuheisel.

Enjoy the second half.

GO BRUINS.

Goal line stance said it all. Over

A good HC would have a NEW play drawn up for that. Predictable Terry D Off. Sick of this s—-t.
He went into the teeth of the D too. TD college of losers.

That was brutally truthful...

That first drive was the most creative bit of play calling I’ve seen in CRN tenure. Well done. Yeah we needed the points but progress is progress. I’m still glad they went for it but RB should’ve seen the gap to the right. Fight on boys, 30 min. left .

by rsmbruinfan on Oct 1, 2011 9:11 PM PDT reply actions

Our offense looks pretty decent

I’m pretty happy with the offense which for the first time in the last 4 years shows a real passing game. They are really improving. The defense doesn’t look too good but at least they got a partial stop on that last Stanford drive.

Got to remember that this is Stanford who may be as good as anyone in the country. They killed top 10 Virginia Tech 40-12 in the Orange Bowl last year and ended their conference play by beating Cal at Cal 38-0. And in their last game before this game they beat Arizona on the road 35-7. Foles is a future NFL quarterback and they were held to 7. Stanford doesn’t give up many points while their offense is like a machine.

The bad news is that they have been playing better in the second half so let’s see what happens.

I don't give a sh!t how "good" this Stanford team is

A UCLA team should never feel this helpless against Stanford.

by Nestor on Oct 1, 2011 9:12 PM PDT up reply actions

It's part of the reality

We’re are playing a potential national champion team. We’re not playing some generic Stanford team. I don’t think Alabama or LSU are any better than Stanford. Yes, being UCLA we should be able to be competitive with anyone. But this is easily the best team we will play this year, and they make almost every team they play look bad. We’re not yet a national championship contender. If we can put up a real fight here it does mean something.

by RogerT on Oct 1, 2011 9:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Agree that this is the best team we face this year

but Stanford is not in the same class of Bama. LSU has offensive issues but Bama would beat this Furd team by at least 10. Furd’s run defense hasn’t faced anyone all year so their numbers are skewed. Furd wouldn’t be able to stop Trent Richardson and that Bama D would contain Luck. That Bama D is a mini-NFL defense IMO. You’ll see a lot of them get drafted high

by BlueReign on Oct 1, 2011 9:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep

And if we had competent coaches leading the D, we would have had a shot in this game instead of looking like bunch of assclowns.

by Nestor on Oct 1, 2011 9:22 PM PDT up reply actions

A matter of opinion

No way to know for sure, but last year the way they were playing at the end of the year I think they may have been the best team in the country.

And that's the problem

You are good with it. We are not.

by Nestor on Oct 1, 2011 9:20 PM PDT up reply actions

There was a lot of griping about announcers in the first half thread,

so I looked up a comment I did a long time ago, I think during basketball season. I copied it and I print it again for your edification as the second half prepares to start.

Or to put it another way

sometimes Herbstreit’s head appears on my screen with his mouth moving, but I don’t hear what he’s saying.
I never have understood how so many highly educated and highly intelligent brothers and sisters of mine can weep and gnash their collective teeth and rend their collective blue and gold clothing about how bad the announcers are when the power to resolve the issue is that one little button on the remote called "Vol."

A parable may help illustrate and educate. There was a man who went camping and wanted to build a fire. So he went to the next campsite to get a light. Seeing no one around, he picked up a handful of red hot coals to take back to his place and start his fire. Holding hot coals in his hand cause great pain, and how how he complained. The red hot coals were not only painful, they were biased, because they hurt the palm of his hand more than his fingers. And they weren’t accurate. And they were nonsensical. But more than anything, they caused constant, incessant, unendurable pain. But the man wanted his campfire lit, so he kept those coals clenched tightly in his hand, lest he drop one and miss the benefit that it would confer. Indeed, he kept those coals in his hand until they simply went out. After that, he went on his favorite campfire blog and found that many of his friends were also typing one-handed because they, too, had burned their hands by holding red hot coals.

Then an older, more geezerly sage, pointed out that all of their pain could have been avoided had they just dropped the coals and used their lighter, which strangely enough resembles the volume button on a tv remote. That sage also reminded them that every time they picked up those hot coals, they got burned, and it caused tremendous pain. He noted that all of these poor souls were smart enough to know that the stuff that looked like flames probably was flames. He asked them, "Brothers and sisters, why do you inflict such pain on yourself when it could so easily be avoided?" "Oh foolish geezer," they said. "We scoff at you. Yea, we scorn your advice. We have to pick up the coals. We have always picked up the coals. The coals are our friends, because they provide all sorts of things that we can’t do without. How could we tell whether our campfire was actually burning just by looking at it. We have to have those coals always burning our hands to make us aware that our campfire is, indeed, burning. We simply cannot know if our campfire is burning otherwise. If we dropped Herbstreit or the Lavinoma, we will lose those precious insights." The geezerly sage replied, "Tell me then what these great benefits are, so that I too can learn why it’s so desireable to have hot coals causing me the great pain that you complain about."

Yea and verily, no one could answer the geezer. All was quiet, except for more complaints about how much pain the coals caused. The geezer sighed and walked away, back out into the wilderness, wondering when his voice would be heard. Alas, it came to pass that the volume button was directed at the geezerly sage, who only wanted to end the pain which his brothers and sisters were inflicting on themselves. His voice became weaker and weaker. And then his brother and sisters started misusing the apostrophe, and the geezerly sage wept bitter tears.

Thus endeth the reading of the parable. Go and listen no more.

If I turn the volume off, I won't know who is doing what.

My screen size is about the size of a 3 X 5 postcard. I wish I could.

by uclahy on Oct 1, 2011 9:52 PM PDT reply actions

It's the coaches' fault

Putting Embree in a position he isn’t suited for. We haven’t gotten anything out of our punts all season (and last) — consistently poor decisions and he STILL doesn’t get pulled. We had such solid recruiting I have a hard time believing that there is true competition (or if there is competition, is there ANY player development whatsoever?).

by dokein on Oct 1, 2011 9:52 PM PDT reply actions

That one is on Neuheisel - oops, CTSS

There is no way that that poor kid should be put in a position where he cannot succeed. He does not have the skill to return punts. CTSS, why don’t you get the fat kid with the glasses in the 23rd row and put him in there. Neither of them have any aptitude for what you’re asking them to do, but maybe Stanford will feel sorry for the guy.

That is enough for me – CTSS has to go irrespective of the rest of the season. He is a horrible personnel manager. Let him be head cheerleader, but he cannot be head coach.

Just completely lacking in fundamentals

I don’t understand how a 4th year operation at this level of sports can be lacking in the same fundamentals that a decent HS team has mastered. Poor tackling (not wrapping), an unbelieveable inability to score PAT, sloppy penalties, extremely poor decision making by multiple players. That’s on coaching.

Looking at the physical stats and recruiting desirability of the players versus how they perform on the field, it is clear that there is no player development. That’s on coaching.

And compounding both of the above factors, there is no consistent competition for a spot on the field. Some players seem to be favored despite poor on-field performance. Maybe they do well in practice, but some people are lifelong practice players. That’s on coaching.
