Bruins Nation Pick 'Em: Week 7

The group as a whole picked pretty well last week.  We had quite a few near unanimous picks last week, and this week should have more splits.  Here are the updated standings:

  1. freesia39: 58-36-2
  2. AHMB: 56-38-2
  3. Tydides: 54-40-2
  4. Bellerophon:  53-41-2
  5. Ajax:  50-44-2
  6. Ryan R.: 49-45-2
  7. gbruin:  48-46-2
  8. Patroclus: 48-46-2
  9. Nestor: 47-47-2
  10. Odysseus:  46-48-2
  11. Tasser10: 34-44-2
  12. Achilles:  21-11

Our picks for this week's game are after the jump.

Star-divide

San Diego St. @ Air Force (-6) - San Diego St. won last year's tight contest 27-25 at home.  This year, the Aztecs are the team that travels.  I think Air Force's ground game will be too tough.  Bellerophon, Odysseus, Tydides, and Achilles are picking San Diego St.

Southern Cal (-3) @ Cal - Thursday night road games can be brutal on the road, as Cal saw first hand last week.  Unfortunately for Cal, they don't have a rowdy home stadium this year and are playing their home games at AT&T Park.  I grudgingly think Southern Cal will cover, as does everyone except Ryan R., Odysseus, and Tydides.

Miami @ North Carolina (-2) - A week after coughing up a come from behind win against Virginia Tech, Miami travels to Chapel Hill to take on the Tar Heels.  I like the Tar Heels to cover at home, as does Nestor, Odysseus, Tydides, and Tasser10.

Georgia Tech (-8.5) @ Virginia - Tech's running game is simply too much for Virginia's defense.  I expect them to cover big.  The lone pick for Virginia is from Odysseus.

South Carolina (-5) @ Mississippi St. - I was in the real USC's corner until I read the news about Garcia being kicked off the team.  The Gamecocks have received quite a bit of bad news lately, and I think the Bulldogs will take advantage.  Tydides, Ajax, Tasser10, and Achilles are sticking with the Gamecocks.

Clemson (-8) @ Maryland - At some point, Clemson will suffer a bad loss because Clemson ALWAYS suffers a bad loss (or two).  I don't think it will be this week.  Bellerophon and Odysseus are the only two picking the Terps.

Utah @ Pittsburgh (-6.5) - Utah lost their quarterback for the year, and Pitt looks to be turning the corner.  I think Pitt wins big.  Odysseus is the only one picking Utah.

BYU @ Oregon St. (-1) - The oddsmakers have been high on the Beavers after they beat the spread against the Sun Devils.  They beat favored Arizona last week, ushering Mike Stoops to the door, and they come in as favorites against a solid BYU squad.  I think BYU will win in Corvallis, but OSU is looking better every week.  I'm joined by gbruin, Ryan R., freesia39, Odysseus, Tydides, and Ajax.

Arizona St. @ Oregon (-15) - The Pac-12 South favorite is more than two touchdown dogs to Oregon.  Yikes.  I think the Ducks should roll.  Odysseus and Tasser10 are the only ones picking ASU.

Baylor @ Texas A&M (-9.5) - Until Baylor shows me they can finish, they'll always be a team that fades in my mind.  I'm picking the Aggies to cover, as are Patroclus, Odysseus, Ajax, and Achilles.

LSU (-15) @ Tennessee - I think LSU is the best team in the country.  They should roll against an improved Volunteer squad.  Odysseus and Tydides are picking the Vols.

Colorado @ Washington (-16.5) - Washington is the better team, but this is a very large spread.  I think Colorado will keep it closer than 17 points.  Nestor, Bellerophon, freesia39, Odysseus, Ajax, Tasser10, and Achilles agree.

Michigan @ Michigan St. (-3) - Michigan is rolling and looks to stay hot against their in-state rival.  Growing up a Michigan fan, I still find it hard to pick against the Wolverines, but I think Michigan St. has the advantage.  I'm the only one picking the Spartans.

Ohio St. @ Illinois (-3.5) - I'm pleased to say that I jumped on the Zook bandwagon early this year.  I think they'll keep it going against a demoralized Buckeye squad.  Nestor, Tydides, and Tasser10 agree.

Stanford (-20) @ Washington St. - Apparently, Gameday was planning on travelling to Pullman for the game until they lost at UCLA.  I'm sure Fowler & Co. sent a Thank You note to Coach Neu.  I think Stanford will continue to win big, as Coach Shaw has already shown that he likes to pile it on late.  Everyone but Nestor, Odysseus, and Tasser10 agree.

Oklahoma St. (-5.5) @ Texas - The schedule couldn't have worked out any worse for Texas.  A week after getting blitzed by Oklahoma, they have to face off against another undefeated, Top 10 team.  I think the Cowboys will win big.  Nestor, Bellerophon, Patroclus, Odysseus, Tydides, and Achilles are picking the Horns.

Well folks, there are our picks.  Let us know why we're wrong.  This thread will also be used for the San Diego St. @ Air Force and Southern Cal @ Cal open game threads, so fire away while cheering against the Trogans!

0-0 early from Phone Booth Park

SC had a 1st and goal, and got to the 5 yard line before failing to convert a fake FG.

I wouldn't call that failed trick play

a fake FG. One of the strangest formations I’ve ever seen though.

Although you may be right

now that I think about it…… lol sorry!

by Chris09 on Oct 13, 2011 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions

No worries

That was a pretty odd formation. Not so much a fake FG, as putting the FG unit on the field, and then having them line up in some crazy-ass formation.

Was hoping this game would help keep me awake a while

Forget having a beer, I may need a coffee or a cup of tea just to make it through this one.

Hope nobody here bet the over.

Wasted Thursday

Why use a Thursday night on a school playing in an alternate stadium?

I am surprised how sparse it looks

I thought they would pack the house for this game.

Hop on one BART Train from Cal

walk a few blocks (ok fine it’s a mile.) Boom AT&T park.

by freesia39 on Oct 13, 2011 7:13 PM PDT up reply actions

20 minute walk or a short Light Rail ride from one of the downtown BART stations

Far easier than it is for our students to get to the Rose Bowl from Westwood.

I guess that means you have not seen Cal's ticket prices for the season

at The Phone Booth. I believe that the prime seats are $100 face. Even the cheaper tickets are around $70.

Cal's ticket pricing

linked here.

$65-80 for Presbyterian, Wazzu and Oregon State. Yes, they tried charging people $80 to watch the Presbyterian game.
$85-100 for U$C and Utah. Note, I got an email from Travelzoo this AM with a half-off offer for the Utah game.

Not the brightest of throws by Maynard

And $C in prime position for another score

formerly bruinhoo

by Patroclus on Oct 13, 2011 7:11 PM PDT reply actions

20-0 $C

Well, barring another Cal screwup, at least this game is 22 points better than last year’s game was at halftime.

I am betting Cal makes a comeback

They are not this bad because this is pretty bad.

Milwaukee up 4-2 in the 7th

But we are not in position to laugh man ...

I am just thinking about our first 3 offensive possessions against Texas, the first half against Washington State … oy.

This is true

Hell, I just want to give them a reason to justify their hate.

Why does ESPN shove 3 announcers in our TV for this Thu night games?

What the heck does Craig James add to watching this game? Palmer is awful too.

LOL at ESPN

Glorifying Barry Bonds.

by Nestor on Oct 13, 2011 8:23 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

Saw a commercial for Dr. Ting over the weekend on local Bay Area TV

the Dr. Ting who (allegedly) helped Bonds ’roid up, and whose sons tested positive for steroids while on the $C football team.

our corners

I hope they have a field day against Maynard. I’m looking toward the Cal game as the one where we’ll break our streak of not scoring a defensive/special team touchdown.

Maynard looks like the kind of guy to end it, doesn't he?

I first saw maynard in the washington game

My first impression : One big hit and this kid has a neck injury. Look at the helmet on his head! It almost looks too heavy. A giraffe neck if I ever did see one.

I acknowledge that we need one person with a strong stomach

to monitor espn (no more capitals for them) to make sure we track the anti-UCLA propaganda, but there is no reason for so many people to be listening and complaining. I just don’t understand why anyone feels the need to hear what the blowhards have to say. What do they add to the game? Do you care what Craig James has to say about anything? I need to hear his opinion about a much as I need an IRS audit.

There is a universe of people (an ever-diminishing one, I hope) who continue to listen to these blowhards. I give you no sympathy at all, and frankly, I don’t understand why you feel the need to rant at such a controllable irritation. Just turn the sound off and all will be cured.

Oh heavens

I stink at this game. Good thing I don’t gamble. I need to go 24 and -8 to catch freesia. Maybe she can go on probation? Get some wins vacated?

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

Don't worry, Tas

As long as Doughnut Dan is in charge, your actualy record has nothing to do with your continued employment.
