Saturday Football Open Thread
Well folks, it is another Saturday and there is football to be played all around the country. I know that after Thursday night many of us might have forgotten how the game is supposed to be played. The early games are starting to wrap up, with Clemson, Kansas State and Oklahoma State running over their opponents, while Ron Zook's Illinois team is about to fall to Purdue, so let's refresh our memories with a few games this afternoon and evening. Some of the main games around the country, and among the Pac-12 on TV today:
12:30pm PDT:
- Oregon @ Colorado (Fox Sports)
- Auburn @ LSU (CBS)
- Georgia Tech @ Miami (ESPN)
- Nebraska @ Minnesota (ABC)
- Maryland @ Florida State (ESPN2)
- Air Force @ Boise State (Versus)
- Texas A&M @ Iowa State
The action continues into the evening, with the following games starting at 4pm PDT:
- Utah @ Cal (Fox Sports)
- Penn St @ Northwestern (Big Ten Network)
- Tennessee @ Alabama (4:15pm, ESPN2)
And the big games of the evening are starting up on the 4:30 - 5pm PDT slot
- Southern Cal @ Notre Dame (4:30pm, NBC)
- Washington @ Stanford (5pm, ABC)
- Wisconsin @ Michigan State (5pm, ESPN)
Oregon State @ Wazzu takes up the Pac-12 late night spot this week, with a 7:30 PDT/10:30 EDT kickoff from Pullman on Fox Sports/Comcast. This is your open thread to discuss all of the action on the field today and tonight.

I have the sound on this afternoon here in geezerville
I’m watching The Bourne Ultimatum. I’m sort of footballed out at the moment.
Relevant
When your team is indeed ‘nationally relevant’ then even watching games in days your team doesn’t play is more fun.
Damn you Dan Guerrerror!

Thank you to the Mods
Quick “thank you” to Patroclus, gbruin, freesia, Nestor, Tasser and Bellerophon for your leadership through what are (in my memory) the darkest days for UCLA football. We know that you all have lives and jobs and families and I just love your passion and energy and commitment to this community!
And I also confess to being a RN defender and sometimes apologist who is oh-so-sorry for not seeing this train wreck coming sooner and speaking out more. Please forgive my blindness to the facts. I now join the ranks of my fellow Bruin brothers and sisters calling for Rick to do the right thing and resign along with Dan Guerrero so that the University can move ahead and quickly get the correct leaders in place for our athletic program and this football team.
What happened on Thursday is an abject embarrassment to our school. It’s unacceptable that our AD didn’t speak out forcefully on Thursday following the incident and take his own tough steps to punish the offenders and remove a team leader that has lost control of his team.
Along with a huge hit to the UCLA brand in front of a national TV audience that will take years of good results to overcome, our team suffered 6 suspensions at a time it can least afford them. In short, an epic fail in all fronts by the adults leading these kids who can only do the honorable thing and resign their posts. Immediately.

According to the CBS College Football crew
this morning, CRN’s “hot seat” actual temperature reads “tepid”. Tepid. Maybe according to the AD I guess.
Coaching
While watching the other games today, I am just amazed how teams with “inferior” talent simply win because their coaches know what they are doing.
Bill Snyder at K-State
Sarkisian at UW
Harbaugh while at Stanford
Peterson at Boise St.
by UCLA Championships Made Here on Oct 22, 2011 2:36 PM PDT reply actions
Here are the numbers on Sark
09 – 5-7
10 – 7-6
11 – 5-1
His predecessor was the legendary Ty Willingham, who may still be on Doughnut Dan’s short list to replace CTSS. Coach Ty had slightly worse numbers
06 – 5-7
07 – 4-9
08 – 0-12. Yes, they ran the table in Coach Ty’s last season.
So Sark’s numbers are impressive compared with those of his predecessor. Sark’s numbers are much better than CTSS’s numbers when compared to his predecessors at CU, UW or UCLA. I know it not a ringing endorsement of Sark to say that he’s doing better than CTSS. But he’s not doing badly. He’s turned the program around. Something CTSS hasn’t been able to do.
Would I want Sark at UCLA? Let’s see. Is there a Sark -Cheatie Petie connection?
Yeah, I love watch Les Miles' teams.
His teams play hard, fast, and aggressive. This in spite of his game-day technical inefficiencies.
What Snyder does @ KSU is so impressive.

Something to think about.
Arizona put up 42 points against in the 1st half alone. We haven’t scored 42 points as a team in a single game this year. In the entire Neuheisel era, we’ve only ever scored 42 points twice; both against Wazzu.

not a huge fan of the helmets, but no big deal. funny thing is (which has been mentioned before) is their fan stores:
http://uclabruins.cbscollegestore.com/store.cfm?store_id=117
http://und.cbscollegestore.com/store_contents.cfm?store_id=61&product_id=203651&partner_id=13968
34 adidas products on UCLA’s site… 199 adidas products on ND’s.
579 total products for UCLA. 1163 total for ND.
i used these stores to illustrate the adidas issue. you can narrow your selection on the left with adidas. that’s why i linked these sites but, well, all the sites have pretty much the same story… i’m thinking this, too, should be on our (supposed) AD…
ps a trogan friend acquaintance of mine posted it was a “perfect day” for $ยข… i corrected her by saying we didn’t lose today…

Off the RN bandwagon
Before the AZ game, was still holding out hope for a miracle run to finish the season. CRN has to go now unless he pulls off a 5-game winning streak(not going to happen). 6 or 7 wins not acceptable with these pathetic blowout losses.

Are You Kidding Me???
Notre Dame was primed to score a TD to tie it up then they fumble and the ball goes crazily backward and a USC picks it up and takes it the other way to the house. Eerily reminds me of big Theotis Brown’s fluke fumble where he had a HUGE hole against USC only to have the ball impossibly bounce off his leg and right into Dennis Thurman’s hands.
God help me I HATE those guys.

is get athletes on the field then put them in space with the ball. He figures out how to give his playmakers chances in mismatches and in places to succeed.

Watching MSU game
My wife went to MSU, so I’ve always rooted for them. I found it interesting that, in the first half when they were doing well, I cheered especially loud for them. I realized that it had been a long, long time since I’d had a real rooting interest in college ball. Another reason DG and CTSS need to go.
Also
I was at the RB game when Wisconsin beat us, so maybe I don’t like them.
Yep
I worry that if he’s too successful in East Lansing he’ll get hired away by a bigger program with more $. Like what happened to Saban.

As a Bruin
it’s none of my business to talk trash about any other program. Yet every time I’ve watched boy-toy barkley and his sra. ross buddies, I haven’t been impressed! I feel like they’ve lucked into a very easy schedule, just like we had this year. Notre Dame did just as much to lose that game with dumb turnovers as $C did things well. Still, you have to credit the kitten. Winning is winning.

And That's One That Always Gets Me
I remember as a kid back in the 70’s when I was afraid we were going to have to play second fiddle to USC forever. Even when we finally beat those guys in ‘75 to go to the Rose Bowl it took an act of God to overcome Wendell Tyler’s fumblitis that night.

Speaking of Tyler
When Marc Tyler was on the radio a few weeks ago, he claimed his dad told him to go to $c because of that craptastic line “You’re only a Bruin for four years, but a trogan is for life”. Hopefully he was full of crap. Pretty low to lie about your Dad (if he was), or pretty terrible if his Dad actually said it.
I Hope That's Not True
I can’t believe that #26 would have said that. I think his kid is full of BS with that old, worn-out line.

During our streak, a friend of mine had Christmas Cards
that said on the outside (in blue and gold)
1991 24-21
1992 38-37
1993 27-21
1994 31-19
1995 24-20
1996 48-41
1997 31-24
1998 34-17
And on the inside, it said “Tradition is wonderful. Merry Christmas.”
I liked that card.

hurt Wisky’s BCS chances all that much… losing on a last-second review on the #16 team’s home field. They should remain in the top 8 or 9 and if things fall into place, they could still move up.
For me at least
it’s just about the SEC not appearing in the game. The odds of that just went down for sure!

Speaking of making Arizona look like a BCS contender
Playing against UCLA now reminds me of when I used to play EA NCAA Football on the easy (Freshman?) level… great for blowout wins and padding ridiculous stats for all of your offensive and defensive players to get Heismans, Maxwells, Walter Camps, Doak Walker awards, etc. We seem to make all of our opponents look unbelievably good.
