BN Gameday: California Second Half Game Thread
The Bruins have managed to come out and play some decent football, winning the battle in the trenches, getting pressure on Cal's QB, actually tackling, and minimizing stupid mistakes (except for Kevin coughing it up in UCLA territory to give Cal prime position to score their only TD).
Now, let's not get too far ahead of ourselves: Cal is doing everything they can to give this one away, so it's not as if Rick has finally turned the corner. After all, he managed to completely bungle clock management to end the first half, that would have given UCLA a chance at some more points. In other words, just more evidence of why Rick needs to go. Or to be totally blunt: it was a weak-ass, soft, chump conservative loser way to manage the clock.
And, like we said before, every game from here on out is meaningless until Neuheisel and, more importantly, Dan Guerrero are terminated. While we need wholesale regime change in Westwood, it's still nice to taste a lead over our Northern California brothers and sisters.
This is your second half game thread.
GO BRUINS

keep it up in the second half.
nice to see our defense finally taking advantage of mistakes.
Long live the Blue and Gold.
Hurry-up-and-score offense requires throws down the field
Rick has zero confidence in Kevin I-throw-picks-when-given-a-chance Prince.

It's kind of fun watching this game without being emotionally invested in
No pressure whatsover.
And what happened at the second quarter … just reaffirms why we need a wholesale culture/regime change in Westwood.

The big karma change was me moving locations

Second quarter was in my office with my computer
I’m losing about 30+ inches this way, but I’ll take it for a win.

Where was what?
Our offense looks vanilla. Our defense average against a pretty bad QB. And our head coach looks disorganized and cluelessly conservative.
Exactly, I blame scheduling
Lets move to D-II

Hi Bruins, he's a quick summary of the first half
Rick/Prince: Here, you take the win!
Tedford: No, you take the win!
Rick: No, you can have it.
Tedford: No, I insist. You should have the win. I’ll make it really easy for you.
Rick: Well, I’m not sure I want the win… I’ll try to give it back (kinda, sorta)

Good thing Rick promised Angus McClure this job.
Somehow, our terrible ST Coach Frank Gansz looks brilliant compared to McClure’s garbage.
Not sure...
…but if I had to guess I would say it’s because when Rick got here, Angus went from being on the field (TE Coach in ’07) to On-Campus Recruiting Coordinator, off the field.

Cal’s white helmets look pretty sweet. Especially with the California claw mark in the back. Nike did well by them.

Too bad the defense hasn't played like this every week
Especially, say, last week. Still far too inconsistent but it’s always nice to get a win. Also, Cal would have a hard time beating anyone this year. Still, in sports terms this has been one of the best days I’ve had in years.
Arsenal smokes Chelsea, UGA beats Florida and this. I don’t really have anything to complain about.

Maynard is mercurial and tonight he stunk.
by orlandobruin on Oct 29, 2011 7:04 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
yeah
that had ‘freak injury to 2 UCLA players’ written all over it for a minute there
Maynard was a really big fan of...
…Kevin Prince’s performance against Texas in the Rose Bowl.
He’s just trying to do the same.
This is a win against an average Pac-12 squad
However, this will have no impact on the big picture outlook for our prgoram.
are you listening to the commentators
this sets up a HUGE GAME against ARIZONA STATE, next week at the ROSE BOWL
And it shouldn't.
Little embarrassing that we couldn’t pass for 100 yards.

True

Agreed.
Happy for the kids though. And for the fans that came out on Homecoming.

You guys mind if we copy your regime change posts?

Hey man!
Don’t be trying to swipe a decent head coach.
We need Tedford to keep you guys at mediocre for when we get a real head coach.
Just link them. It's easier and less discouraging

But there is no need to #OccupyCalAthletics
You guys already have pretty sweet facilities coming your way.
Do we have a chance against ASU next week?
Go Bruins!

Don't bet on it.
They won’t turn it over 5 times.

If we played up to our talent
We should. But doubt we will and our conservative coaching will kill us.
We run the jet sweep as bad as anyone.
Never successful.

Yep!
Always liked #19.

I so want to believe this is a turning the corner game BUT
all I think this game does is give CRN another two weeks – no one will be surprised if we lose to asu.
by pUSCies on Oct 29, 2011 7:09 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
My opinion on this game:
It was as much us playing terrible as you guys playing well. I don’t think this game is an indication for your guys’ future. It is, however, and indication that we’re screwed for the rest of the season.

ASU game will be telling
Go Bruins!
by Bruin1996 on Oct 29, 2011 7:12 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Exactly
We still aren’t very good.
But all the Rick lovers will come out and proclaim all is well in Westwood.
We still need wholesale regime change. This win was thanks to Maynard. Tell him I say thanks.
I'm afraid you're right
Also, there was a lot of luck involved. We got all the breaks.

Good for Bruins...
but Cal looks like we did last week…the fire is nearly out.
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
I like Bowens a lot as a special teams player.
Always catches my eye.

So glad I get the postgame this week.
I don’t see why the others have been bemoaning the task lately.

Don't say that...
that was the byline for last weeks game
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
Hahahahahaha
You think this game changes anything?
This team won in spite of Rick.
The young guys finally got a chance (Aramide, Kendricks, Yandall, etc.) because Rick had no choice and he made them look like a damn fool for sitting them all season.
Not tooting Rick's horn at all...
just shocked and amazed that we have squeaked into such a position…. because we really are so poorly led, and inconsistent.
I'll admit this, though...
first win where I wasn’t ashamed of the performance…
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
Victory formation.
Always a good thing.

Look at the pattern
Loss, win, loss, win, loss, win, loss, win.
Now project that out the rest of the year.
We lose to Colorado at home?!?!
by orlandobruin on Oct 29, 2011 7:18 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
We'd get the W on 'SC
But I say no way we lose to Colorado lol.
Oh, I know.
But then we lose the Bowl game…

most satisfying win of the year
granted the competition wasn’t great but it was better than the sjsu or wsu performance.
Long live the Blue and Gold.
took a lot of hits
and did well to bounce back after the early fumble, kept running.
KP gets an honorable mention for a gane ball.
And a couple hard hats.

105,511 at the OSU stadium
You think the local business owners are griping about the traffic issues? We could routinely fill 90% or more of a 60K stadium on campus.
Sounds like 105,511 people walking around..,.
…who will drink in local bars and eat in local restaurants and patronize local businesses.
One would think the business owners in Westwood would be all over the idea of 60,000+ people being in Westwood for 6 football games per year.
Coaches often get fired after losing to Oregon State, which is Cal’s next opponent.

He gets one more year minimum
very, very expensive to fire him and it’s not unreasonable to say that the facilities upgrades have him to thank for so he gets a chance to win in the renovated stadium

To be fair, it was kind of a weak call by the SPTR
The guy didn’t do much, just turned his head back to the DB and nodded
Post game thread is up
Check it here. We can continue our open thread for ongoing games there, too.
