Why I will always root for the Bruins (at least in football)

UCLA saftey Dietrich Riley waves to the crowd as he is carted off the field during the third quarter Saturday at the Rose Bowl.

(Jayne Kamin-Oncea / US Presswire / October 29, 2011)

There was discussion last week whether it is acceptable to root against the Bruins.  In football we can not.

I am not saying anyone here wished for injuries in any way, shape or form.  I know BN would not hope even for little injuries for the other side.

But we have to remember, in football, the young men that are playing with four great letters on their helmets, are putting themselves in harms way for themselves, their teammates and our school.   The Bruin players on the field have my support.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Also a followup question

What do you mean by “at least in football”?

Good catch

If anything, football is the sport least deserving of support right now.

It sounds like he means

that because football players put themselves in harm’s way, we should never root against them. So, for example, if UCLA had an ultimate fighting team, we should never root against them. But it’s ok to root against golf, according to this logic.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

We never root against the players

or against the team for that matter.

It’s more a matter of deciding to what depths the program needs to sink in order to spur the zombies at the Morgan Center into action. So, as I tried to explain somewhere else, you can root for success for the players yet not be too despondent if they lose the game, if it means changes that improve UCLA Football in the long term…

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

I think you have it exactly right

Rooting for the players while demanding change of management is AOK.
Rooting for the players while be ambivalent about the final score is AOK.
Wishing that players that are not giving it their all were held accountable by their coaches is AOK.
Rooting against the team and players is too much.

Not just rooting, but being proud of the players

They don’t have to win for me to be proud of them. I was proud of our guys in the Cal game. I wasn’t proud of them in th Arizona game.
