BN Gameday: Washington State Pre-Game Thread

We have a later kickoff against the Cougars tonight at 7:30 pm PST. Our game thread is going up around 7:15 pm PST. So we still have a huge chunk of Saturday (more than just 5 hrs) to take in lots of football action while getting ready for the Bruins.

Some of the game we are going to pay attention will include Michigan's visit to Northwestern (4:00 pm PST Big Ten Network), Georgia's visit to Tennessee (4:00 pm PST, ESPN2 or ESPN3) and the Buckeyes taking on the Nebraska Cornhuskers (5:00 pm PST, ABC). The Pac-12 game of note around this time will be Colorado's visit to Stanford (YIKES) (Versus).

If you haven't had a chance, take a look at our BN pick'em thread here.  You can also check out our Washington State previews here and here

So if you are watching other games today, share your quick takes, observations or pre-game nervous musings, here is our open thread. Have fun.

GO BRUINS.

Thank God we don’t have to play Stanford twice.. I think they will sneak into the National Championship this year.

Do you know ...
Stanford extended its nation-best 12 game winning streak after beating the Bruins last weekend. The Cardinal
has won each of its four games this year by at least 26 points.

Looking forward to the Michigan vs Northwestern game.. could be interesting or a blowout. Baylor’s QB seems to be a class act and his numbers continue to impress.

Here's a note someone posted...
Just how bad are the Arizona Wildcats? They have now fallen to 115th nationally at 503.6 yards allowed per game. In its four-game slide, the Wildcats have allowed 564.75 yards per game. To make matters worse, they
sit at 118 in opponent points allowed per game at 44.5. In case you were wondering, there are only 120 teams. No bueno.

How do you like that
Attendance at the Coliseum for last Saturday’s game between U$C and Arizona was 63,707, the smallest turnout for a U$C home game since 2002. So far this season, the four-game average for the Trojans is 67,919; about 20,000 less from the 2007 season, which the Los Angeles Daily News estimated translates into $1.2 million in decreased revenue per game in ticket sales alone.

that point regarding the drop in attendance and corresponding revenue

needs to be keeping DG up at night. Will be interesting to see the crowd at the Rose Bowl tonight, but given the SJSU and Texas games, I would not be surprised to see a 10k drop in our attendance, not to mention what we might be drawing with a team playing well on the field.

by Nestor on Oct 8, 2011 2:45 PM PDT up reply actions

They are betting that a win by the Sundevils

will almost certainly lock its position in the first-ever Pac-12 Conference Championship as the representative from the South (due to the mathematical absence of USC and lack of power rounding out the rest of the division).

by LA Bruin on Oct 8, 2011 2:36 PM PDT up reply actions

yep, a win by ASU puts them 3 games ahead of Utah (plus tiebreaker)

and leaves us as the only other team with any shot at coming out of the South. So yes, ASU clinches their title game spot with a win.

That was my 5th year.

OK. Got my wires crossed.

BTW, www.CFBDatawarehouse.com is the greatest web site ever.

The other 6-3 slugfest was @ the Rose Bowl, 2003, CTS’s first win after the debacle in Boulder, CO.

The 9 a.m. P.S.T. game was the following year. 35-17 Bruins at Champaign.

Both games were the second games of the season and both followed season opening losses that I attended (@ CU in 03 and OK State at the RB in 04).

Sorry for the confusion.

Threading my way from the top, I saw a lot of "my first Bruin game."

My first game was in 1960 at the Crapaseum, against Air Force, which featured an 80 yard (maybe longer) run by our svelte tailback, Billy Kilmer. (Many years later, I sat across the aisle from him on a flight and mentioned that run, and his response was “Jesus Christ.” That’s it. Nothing else.) Those were the single wing days, and there was really nothing cooler than watching the Bruins serpentine out of the huddle.

My First Bruin Game

September 1974 in Iowa City when our guys came to my neck of the woods to play Iowa. UCLA had just come off a 13-13 tie the week before with Tennessee and were huge favorites in this game. I was a brave 14 year-old in a sea of Hawkeye fans rooting for my Bruins (don’t think my parents EVER understood how I came to love UCLA). Iowa was emotionally-charged as this was Bob Commings first game at home as new Iowa head coach and shut down our vaunted offense. John Sciarra had a horrible day and the Hawkeyes sprang the upset of the day knocking us off 21-10.
