Sadness

That is my word for the day after our latest performance.    I am tired of blaming Gordon and Dragovic and Honeycutt and Reeves.   I think I know where the blame lies.   This is as terrible a coached team as I have ever seen at UCLA. That includes Lavin, Farmer, and Hazzard squads.    This team has more talent then the team two seasons ago, but amazingly has a chance to be worse.

I am totally dejected about this.  I expected at worst a competitive team that should make the tournament and now at best we are playing for a .500 record and hoping for a PAC12 tournament run.    What is most irritating is a total failure to adapt for 2 entire games.   We needed to do something different to 'upset' a team like Middle Tennessee.   No zone defense in basketball history could yield the good looks our man2man defense does. 2 seasons ago I said we had to play zone and this is pretty much identical except with seemingly better players.

Star-divide

On offense we look equally clueless.   We let a team attack us defensively and never make them pay. Jones/Anderson/Lamb are not good enough to make plays at the end of shot clocks.   We need to play offense through our bigs at all costs. (Hopefully this will include Nelson soon). How about setting screens for everyone.   The least we can do is make someone run through a screen.

What about our total lack of desperation?   Do we have a press for the love of god?   When a team is manhandling you and you are down 13 or so with 8 minutes left the least you can do is press the other team.   Damn it I am fucking pissed off.    Time to coach Howland your hourglass is running out.     For me at least I think it has.   2 straight games of total bullshit says enough.  You earned a mulligan, you have not earned a 2nd one.   I would accept a Guerrero firing however in lieu of a coaching change in basketball immediately however, so if Dan wants to fall on the sword I might be willing to keep you around if the next 'qualified' AD thinks you can still be the man for the job.

You could have titled your fanpost "numbness"

And, it would have been just as true.

I watched the game with my roommate who admits she does not know much about basketball. Some of the unsolicited remarks she made last night:

“If they keep making those shots (3s) why do the Bruins keep letting them?”
“It doesn’t look like you guys run plays. You guys should run some plays.”
“What’s wrong with them?”
“I thought those guys were the Bruins because they’re in blue and they’re playing really good.”
“Do they always play like this? I thought you guys were good.”

I could go on. Everytime she made one of these unsolicited remarks it really just cut to the bone. She really just kept hitting the nail on the head completely by accident.

Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all the time thing. You don't win once in a while; you don't do things right once in a while; you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing. ~ Vince Lombardi

numbness

comes after I am done crying. That or melancholy. Every UCLA basketball is my super bowl. It is really the only thing I look forward to viewing as a sports fan anymore. I work in the business and I see everything else as a job, but with hoops and football once upon a time it is actually what I still enjoyed. This is tough to watch a 2nd time in 3 seasons.

Ya I was baffled by a press not being used either

You would think Howland would use it instead of just watching his team flop around like a dead fish
