Pathetic. Beyond pathetic.
And when you have at least two “bigs” who can’t/won’t rebound and prefer to play on the perimeter …
Rebounding is a team activity
and we are not doing our job. Vivid example yesterday where if Josh blocks out his man, Jerime gets an easy rebound. Josh instead relied on the patented “surely this guy won’t want to have to run all the way around my fat ass?” technique, and Jerime was outjumped by a bigger guy.
We could be going with our smallest feasible lineup and we shouldn’t be this low.
That's pretty much it
Even if our bigs don’t get the rebound themselves, it’s still their primary job to block somebody out so that our team has a better chance of getting it. While I agree it’s a team activity, the blame for this number being so low is primarily with our bigs (with the exception of Reeves).
Now, now, guys.
Think of who we’ve been playing. We have gone nose to nose and slugged it out with the elite powerhouses of the nation. I want each of you to stop the first ten people you see and say one word – “Rebound.” I guarantee that 8 out of those 10 people at least will say “Middle Tennessee.”
The rebounding numbers are a bit misleading
because they don’t take into account pace/number of available rebounds. For instance, MTSU shooting lights out left us without a lot of rebounding opportunities in that game. We also traditionally play a slow-paced game, so fewer possessions means fewer rebounds.
In total, we’ve grabbed 129 rebounds to our opponents’ 115, which means we’re getting 52.9% of rebounds (average, by definition, is 50%). Of course, we’ve played three weak teams of four and I’d like to see our numbers be better than they are, but we’re not actually below average when you take opportunities into account.

You see that FG% number?
That’s equivalent to 42% shooting, so clearly any opportunities we’re not getting on the defensive end, we sure as hell are getting on the offensive end.
The FG% is terrible
But that doesn’t change the fact that we are outrebounding our opponents, and that the #240 ranking in rebounds per game is misleading. In terms of actual rebound opportunities we are above average. Not world-beaters, but above average.

Which doesn't change the fact that outrebounding your opponents
Doesn’t make you a good rebounding team. If you have taller, more skilled players in the game, which we had in 3 out of 4 games, you should outrebound your opponents. You should be able to get rebounds on either end of the floor, and you should be better than #240 in the country in this statistic. If you do not do these things, then you are exactly what being #240 in the country in a statistic says you are: Bad at it.
rebounding
This is a combination of factors. There is a lack of effort, but playing bad offense combined with bad defense gives your team less rebounds at the defensive end for the easier rebounds because in theory you already have position. There is a lack of effort boxing out. You really should watch our guards turn and run to the rim on a long jumper instead of sealing off the closest man. I have seem many defensive rebounds bounce over our entire team. Also when you play an offense that takes crappy shots and does not draw help you never even get the defense off balance. It allows the defense to stay engaged with their man making it easier to box out by keeping position. It is honestly a wonder we outrebound opponents at all considering how poorly we defend and play offense. If we go small we will get mutiliated on the boards. We will dominate the glass if we can figure out how to play offense a little bit.
