BN Black Friday: CFB, UCLA Coaching Hotstove Open Thread
The Death Valley will be the focus of college football action today.
Hope everyone had a great Turkey day.As I sad this am the vibe around greater Bruin Nation heading into tomorrow' game is kind of funky. If you are football fan though this is one of the best times of the year as the festivities kick started yesterday. We get to continue that fun by taking in few more games today. Here are the games of BN interest (Bruins Nation Pick 'Em: Week 13):
- 9:00 am Houston @ Tulsa (Comcast Sportsnet)
- 9:00 am Iowa @ Nebraska (ABC)
- 11:30 am Arkansas @ LSU (CBS)
- 12:30 pm Colorado @ Utah (FSN - check local listings)
- 12:30 pm Boston College @ Miami (ABC)
- 4:00 pm Pittsburgh @ West Virginia (ESPN)
- 7:15 pm California @ Arizona St. (ESPN)
Obviously Arkansas-LSU is the headliner. I imagine there will be few Neubs holding their breath to see if CU can beat Utah. There is also the Cal game in Tempe. None of it really matters all that much in big picture scheme of things.
Speaking of the big picture here are couple of Tweets from SportsbyBrooks:
All due respect to ESPN 710, Herm Edwards not a serious candidate for UCLA job. Tho he is indeed pushing.
And don't forget ESPN 710 is the Trojan station. So anyone who actually took anything seriously coming from Trojan honks in that outlet should check your heads. Herm Edwards is a clown who is perfect for BSPN in the mold of Dick Vitale and Lee Corso.
BTW SbB also confirmed what we have known and have been sharing for a while. He laughed off the suggestion that money will be an issue when UCLA is officially looking for a new coach (which should have been "official" immediately after the Zona game
If you are watching these games or tracking others, use this to chat them up. This is your open thread to sound off on all matters related to college football including your quick thoughts on our upcoming coaching search on this post Turkey Day Black Friday. Fire away.
GO BRUINS.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Tulsa Up Early on Houston
But Houston driving. Both defenses look bad. Looks like this will be a high scoring affair.
not sure if I should post this in a FanShot, because it would be an ad

I don't make the rules here
but I think it’s great to see. We should all send one of these to Guerrerror.
Roses are red, violets are blue...f*** $C.
That's pretty cool
And I think fine for this open thread as you clearly linked it to share. It’s pretty obvious when the non regulars come here just to pimp their site or product. We can sniff out spamming. :-)
LSU is fully capable of putting up points
and it’s not like Arkansas has a Bama-caliber defense either
Arkansas winning this game would throw the BCS stuff into total chaos

That's why I am rooting for the Hogs
Even though I need LSU to blow their doors out for making any kind of move in my BN pool. You are right about the Arkie defense.
one of my best friends is an LSU alum
so despite my general desire for BCS ridiculousness, I’m rooting for LSU

It'd be awesome
If UCLA schedules a home and home with LSU some day. I have heard it’s an awesome place to go tailgate and watch a CFB game.
I would absolutely make that trip.
If it’s anywhere near as awesome as Knoxville was, sign me up.

Oh dude
I love that movie. I am just saying it has become a real “classic” now instead of an “instant” one. Do kids even know about this movie any more?
Adam Sandler has put up so many stinkers lately
I hope the originals are never forgotten.

I think the last two Sandler flick I watched in theaters ...
Were “Big Daddy” and “50 First Dates” [yes, yes I did].
Mine was probably Anger Management
meh.
Big Daddy at least had Jon Stewart before he was JON STEWART.
by Kenneth Powers on Nov 25, 2011 1:06 PM PST up reply actions
I think I loved Big Daddy ...
… because of all the obvious mixing of law school, obsession with college sports (Syracuse) and dive bars.
He has a five year plan.
What, not die?

Generation gap alert:
I don’t think Adam Sandler is funny. Or Mike Meyers.
To put things in perspective, I also don’t think Richard Wagner’s operas are all that great, either. The bodies of work Sandler, Meyers and Wagner could all be compressed into maybe a two or three minute highlight reel. (Well, longer for Wagner, but not by a whole lot.) A fellow geezer, Mark Twain, was a contemporary of Wagner, and had this to say: “Wagner’s music is really much better than it sounds.” That’s where I stand on Sandler, I guess.
Can't watch it yet here on TCN in DC
Waiting for freaking “JMU v. Rider” game to come an end. 2 mins left.
Colorado just turned back into a pumpkin
and fumbled the ball through the end zone. Touchback.
Shades of Brandon Breazell…. shudder

Just getting the game now
So I guess Utah didn’t do much with the ball. CU has the ball with long 3rd and 15.
Go CU!!!
Help us back into the P-12 championship game :)
That PI
looked like an Aaron Hester PI… not actively interfering, but not looking either.
I think all the guys we lost
are starting this year (or at least playing a lot) for other P-12 schools
I think usually the altitude and weather helps Utah a lot.
Against Colorado, not so much.
Am I remembering correctly?
If Colorado beats Utah, we are in the PAC 12 championship game no matter what?
by FilmBruin on Nov 25, 2011 1:43 PM PST via iPhone app reply actions
I thought ASU had to lose as well?
or are we set because they lost last week?
even if we lose and they win
that puts us at a tie and we have the tie breaker for beating them a few weeks ago
It will be good for the league
If Colorado beats Utah to keep them out of the championship game, it’s a great start to the rivalry the league wants those two schools to have
That's a good point
But I can’t imagine the League wanting a pathetic UCLA team in the championship game. But Utah is not all that special either.
there is no good choice for the title game
I’m guessing a UCLA team coming off a win at SC would be the league’s top choice. But short of that…
by bucknellbruin on Nov 25, 2011 2:25 PM PST up reply actions
Oh yeah, of course not
I was really only talking about the leagues view as it pertained to those two schools. You could also argue that the league would rather have Utah in the championship game because then they can point to that and say how good expansion was for the league.
The only team in the South that is good enough for the championship game, which I hate to admit, is USC.
It wouldn't be so bad if we do go to the Pac-12 Championship
A blowout at the hands of SC followed by a bigger blowout against Oregon on national TV to end the season (no bowl game) has to seal RN’s fate. DG’s fate – can’t be so certain.
Here is something to chew over - state wise
UCLA is 1-16 in football/basketball during Thanksgiving week in last 4 years.
That’s right 1-16. The only win is against D 2 Chaminade.
I have a bad feeling about tomorrow
especially with the flu bug all over the place…
wow huge turnaround for Arkansas
interception to prevent a likely LSU score, and now a huge 66yd play out of nothing
Probably a combination of quality opponents...
…and mental weakness. I don’t remember the last time I was confident UCLA would get up for a big game or travel far and dominate.
Stanford 2001
ushered in permanent bad vibes for us on the road. We haven’t gotten out of it since then.
I remember that game well
Watched it in the lobby in Sproul Hall
True dedication indeed
Now that I live out East, I’m looking for a really good reason to travel back West – haven’t had a good one in a few years. Pac-12 “championship?” No thanks.
Wow
CU is just dominating Utah statistically.
Total Yards 254 39
1st Downs 13 1
Every week goes by — our losses to Arizona and to Utah look even worse.
but it makes our big signature win over colorado that much better!!

Charlie Strong
doing pretty well at Louisville…share of Big East title…even if it’s a crappy conference.
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
Lousiville sweetened his K during mid-season
To lock him up. I still go back and forth on him whether he is a potentially a very good coach. Big East so awful.
Why does LSU wear white at home?
Crappy colors?
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
Georgia Tech does it too.
LSU wears purple for nonconference home games.

Utah is getting manhandled by CU.
The Pac-12 is so unbelievably bad outside of Oregon, Stanford and $C. There could be a no more appropriate end to the Pac-12 Inaugural Championship game than to have the loser of the Championship game lose bowl eligibility in that game.
I am so rooting for this to happen.
"I have one word for you...Be careful."
-Jose Guillen
No John White makes this alot smaller of a gap.
"I have one word for you...Be careful."
-Jose Guillen
And now a lineman
They’re turning into…us…
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
It seems like
we made it through the year without a ton of injuries for once. I guess the trade off is do tackling drills and get guys hurt, or don’t do them and miss all your tackles.
We have had injuries this season
We just have had better depth in terms of talent unlike Neuheisel’s first two years. Of course whether that talent was fully utilized …
True
maybe they haven’t seem as significant because of the depth.
The best defensive player was hurt the entire conference schedule until last game.
Tony Dye.
"I have one word for you...Be careful."
-Jose Guillen
Uh oh
John White hurt for the Utes…
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
LSU showed up after that 1st quarter.
Pretty much dominating since then.
I don’t see how anyone can look objectively at that team and say they aren’t the best team in the country.
"I have one word for you...Be careful."
-Jose Guillen
No one does
The discussion is about second best…
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
for the Pac-12 money perspective
it’s also about getting teams to drop out of the top-4, to make Stanford an automatic BCS team.
all the more amazing
that they don’t seem to be suffering from this whole ‘QB controversy’ BS.
I think Miles is just an alright coach. Light years better than CRN; but that is a given.
I think he handled that situation perfectly with Jefferson’s suspension and shuffling between them all year.
"I have one word for you...Be careful."
-Jose Guillen
and it's 10-7
after a couple of terrible tackles.
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
17-7 Colorado
How the F did we lose to Utah? It is another damning loss for Rick.
And the price is losing out on a bowl game by backing into the championship beat down.
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
My theory is we lost because our O depends on the QB as a threat
and KP wasn’t a threat because of the traction, he couldn’t turn the corner. Of course, we should have game planned for that. The snow wasn’t exactly a surprise.
we also went to a silent count
which led to multiple false starts.
And I don’t think we were ready to play in snow on the road.
Go UC Riverside
up on BC at the half by 3 in Anaheim. (My undergrad alma mater.)

Oh, well
Took BC to overtime. Had a shot to go to double OT. Moral victory, anyone?

Who wants it more?
Announcers chipping on Norm, rightly, for goal line pay calling.
Glad he’s gone.
CMJ is good.
its illegal to simulate
a snap call, or so I thought. It seems Utah has done it against both CU and UCLA. Anyone know more about that rule?
LOL at commentators

Fumble!
Utah turns it over. CU has the ball and a 3 pt lead with 5 min left.

colorado will win!
Life is good
when you accomplish something by doing nothing. Not.
question on my mind
Does Oregon have the personnel to simulate an offense as slow as ours in practice?
Best possible scenario
RN is canned after two straight blowouts – he can’t spin it any other way.
wheew!!!

Thank CU
What a payback. Imagine future buffs talking about preventing UT their major Pac 12 from going to the Pac 12 championship. sc cant do that…yet.
For a moment in time I will dream of
Crushing SUC and the Ducks.
I hate them. I really hate them.
If we’re not motivated now we never will be.
BEAT SUC AND THE DUCKS!
Let's don't forget . . .
. . . it could still be ’Furd. Bo Beavs tomorrow!
Bruins will travel better to ’Furd. I assume the ticket allotment at the championship game will be better than a regular season game at the Farm.

I misread the tweet in my weird Black Friday state of mind.
We don't prewrite anything
None of our teams can be trusted enough to do that, haha.

Once in awhile
when we’re getting blown out in the 3rd quarter, those end of games headlines appear mysteriously quickly :)
As if USC needed more motivation
Now, if they beat us tomorrow, they will have beaten the South division champion.
