BN Black Friday: CFB, UCLA Coaching Hotstove Open Thread

Death Valley

The Death Valley will be the focus of college football action today.

Hope everyone had a great Turkey day.As I sad this am the vibe around greater Bruin Nation heading into tomorrow' game is kind of funky. If you are football fan though this is one of the best times of the year as the festivities kick started yesterday.  We get to continue that fun by taking in few more games today. Here are the games of BN interest (Bruins Nation Pick 'Em: Week 13):

  • 9:00 am Houston @ Tulsa (Comcast Sportsnet)
  • 9:00 am Iowa @ Nebraska (ABC)
  • 11:30 am Arkansas @ LSU (CBS)
  • 12:30 pm Colorado @ Utah (FSN - check local listings)
  • 12:30 pm Boston College @ Miami (ABC)
  • 4:00 pm Pittsburgh @ West Virginia (ESPN)
  • 7:15 pm California @ Arizona St. (ESPN)

Obviously Arkansas-LSU is the headliner. I imagine there will be few Neubs holding their breath to see if CU can beat Utah. There is also the Cal game in Tempe. None of it really matters all that much in big picture scheme of things.

Speaking of the big picture here are couple of Tweets from SportsbyBrooks:

All due respect to ESPN 710, Herm Edwards not a serious candidate for UCLA job. Tho he is indeed pushing.

And don't forget ESPN 710 is the Trojan station. So anyone who actually took anything seriously coming from Trojan honks in that outlet should check your heads. Herm Edwards is a clown who is perfect for BSPN in the mold of Dick Vitale and Lee Corso.

Star-divide

BTW SbB also confirmed what we have known and have been sharing for a while. He laughed off the suggestion that money will be an issue when UCLA is officially looking for a new coach (which should have been "official" immediately after the Zona game

If you are watching these games or tracking others, use this to chat them up. This is your open thread to sound off on all matters related to college football including your quick thoughts on our upcoming coaching search on this post Turkey Day Black Friday. Fire away.

GO BRUINS.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

That's pretty cool

And I think fine for this open thread as you clearly linked it to share. It’s pretty obvious when the non regulars come here just to pimp their site or product. We can sniff out spamming. :-)

LSU is fully capable of putting up points

and it’s not like Arkansas has a Bama-caliber defense either

Arkansas winning this game would throw the BCS stuff into total chaos

by Kenneth Powers on Nov 25, 2011 12:29 PM PST up reply actions

That's why I am rooting for the Hogs

Even though I need LSU to blow their doors out for making any kind of move in my BN pool. You are right about the Arkie defense.

by Nestor on Nov 25, 2011 12:30 PM PST up reply actions

one of my best friends is an LSU alum

so despite my general desire for BCS ridiculousness, I’m rooting for LSU

by Kenneth Powers on Nov 25, 2011 12:31 PM PST up reply actions

It'd be awesome

If UCLA schedules a home and home with LSU some day. I have heard it’s an awesome place to go tailgate and watch a CFB game.

by Nestor on Nov 25, 2011 12:33 PM PST up reply actions

I would absolutely make that trip.

If it’s anywhere near as awesome as Knoxville was, sign me up.

Yeah

And Verne generally puts me to sleep too.

I think the last two Sandler flick I watched in theaters ...

Were “Big Daddy” and “50 First Dates” [yes, yes I did].

by Nestor on Nov 25, 2011 1:04 PM PST up reply actions

Mine was probably Anger Management

meh.

Big Daddy at least had Jon Stewart before he was JON STEWART.

by Kenneth Powers on Nov 25, 2011 1:06 PM PST up reply actions

I think I loved Big Daddy ...

… because of all the obvious mixing of law school, obsession with college sports (Syracuse) and dive bars.

Generation gap alert:

I don’t think Adam Sandler is funny. Or Mike Meyers.

To put things in perspective, I also don’t think Richard Wagner’s operas are all that great, either. The bodies of work Sandler, Meyers and Wagner could all be compressed into maybe a two or three minute highlight reel. (Well, longer for Wagner, but not by a whole lot.) A fellow geezer, Mark Twain, was a contemporary of Wagner, and had this to say: “Wagner’s music is really much better than it sounds.” That’s where I stand on Sandler, I guess.

Just getting the game now

So I guess Utah didn’t do much with the ball. CU has the ball with long 3rd and 15.

Go CU!!!

Help us back into the P-12 championship game :)

I think P. Richardson has been the most impressive of the three.

by Nestor on Nov 25, 2011 1:42 PM PST up reply actions

If Colorado beats Utah, we are in the PAC 12 championship game no matter what?

by FilmBruin on Nov 25, 2011 1:43 PM PST via iPhone app reply actions

I thought ASU had to lose as well?

or are we set because they lost last week?

by captainqtp on Nov 25, 2011 1:46 PM PST up reply actions

We are set

Because they lost last week. We win head to head against them.

by Nestor on Nov 25, 2011 1:47 PM PST up reply actions

even if we lose and they win

that puts us at a tie and we have the tie breaker for beating them a few weeks ago

by BruinEngy on Nov 25, 2011 1:48 PM PST up reply actions

It will be good for the league

If Colorado beats Utah to keep them out of the championship game, it’s a great start to the rivalry the league wants those two schools to have

by Bruin2011 on Nov 25, 2011 2:02 PM PST up reply actions

That's a good point

But I can’t imagine the League wanting a pathetic UCLA team in the championship game. But Utah is not all that special either.

by Nestor on Nov 25, 2011 2:04 PM PST up reply actions

there is no good choice for the title game

I’m guessing a UCLA team coming off a win at SC would be the league’s top choice. But short of that…

by bucknellbruin on Nov 25, 2011 2:25 PM PST up reply actions

Oh yeah, of course not

I was really only talking about the leagues view as it pertained to those two schools. You could also argue that the league would rather have Utah in the championship game because then they can point to that and say how good expansion was for the league.

The only team in the South that is good enough for the championship game, which I hate to admit, is USC.

by Bruin2011 on Nov 25, 2011 2:54 PM PST up reply actions

It wouldn't be so bad if we do go to the Pac-12 Championship

A blowout at the hands of SC followed by a bigger blowout against Oregon on national TV to end the season (no bowl game) has to seal RN’s fate. DG’s fate – can’t be so certain.

by zinlinez on Nov 25, 2011 1:47 PM PST reply actions

Here is something to chew over - state wise

UCLA is 1-16 in football/basketball during Thanksgiving week in last 4 years.

That’s right 1-16. The only win is against D 2 Chaminade.

interception to prevent a likely LSU score, and now a huge 66yd play out of nothing

by VeniceBruin on Nov 25, 2011 1:53 PM PST reply actions

Probably a combination of quality opponents...

…and mental weakness. I don’t remember the last time I was confident UCLA would get up for a big game or travel far and dominate.
