[Update X3] Coaching Hot Stove: Chianti Dan fiddles, Pac-12 schools make moves

Chianti Dan, the clueless bureaucrat continues to fiddle and undermine UCLA's head coaching search. Wazzu isn't waiting around.

Chianti Dan is inexplicably waiting until after the Pac-12 game, but with each passing hour, other more competent athletic directors are taking care of their coaching searches.

UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel is expected to be fired following Pac-12 championship game against Oregon with Boise State coach Chris Peterson, Houston's Kevin Sumlin and Cincinnati's Butch Jones the leading candidates to replace him.

UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero said after USC's 50-0 blowout of the Bruins on Saturday night that Neuheisel will coach against the Ducks next Friday but declined to commit to the former UCLA Rose Bowl hero beyond that.

Star-divide

Wazzu isn't waiting around and isalready trying to hire Mike Leach. ASU is reportedly planning to fire Erickson and if ASU makes a good hire, the Pac-12 South could go from a laughingstock to a real gauntlet. One of ASU's top targets is Kevin Sumlin. Again, we don't support Sumlin, but it would be another one of Chianti Dan's targets while Chianti Dan fiddles. Fire away in the comments.

UPDATE (N): This just in. Illinois just fired Ron Zook today. So that's another school now officially looking for a coach while Chianti Dan sipping away.

UPDATE X2 (Ajax): AZ Central.com is reporting that ASU's Dennis Erickson will be fired as soon as Monday:

On Dennis Erickson: The Republic confirmed Saturday that Erickson will be fired, probably this week, maybe as soon as Monday. However, as of Sunday morning, a time and date of a news conference had not been finalized.

That's one more program that is getting a jump start on UCLA while Chianti Dan focuses on the "big game" on Friday.

As gbruin pointed out:

Who among us would keep our job if we performed like Rick Neuheisel and Dan Guerrero?

Phone: 310-825-2151

E-mail: chancellor@ucla.edu

Let him hear from you, because this is life until Chancellor Block replaces both Guerrero and Neuheisel.

You can do something. Bruins Nation is calling for a boycott of tomorrow's basketball game at the Sports Arena until Chianti Dan terminates Neuheisel.

Go Bruins.

UPDATE X3 (Ajax):

The Kansas City Star is reporting that KU head coach Turner Gill has been fired::

After a thorough examination of our football program, I have concluded that new leadership is necessary to place us on the path toward competing for championships in the Big 12 Conference," Zenger said in a statement. "I come to this conclusion reluctantly, because I have the utmost respect for Turner Gill as a quality individual who wants only the best for the young men he coaches."

KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little supported the decision:

In consulting with athletic director Zenger, I agree that in order to achieve the excellence we seek in Kansas football it is time to make a leadership change.

Unlike our incompetent chianti sippping chief bureaucrat AD, Zenger and Gray-Little comprehend the importance of being proactive in moving their football program in the right direction.

Mark Dantonio

Has done some great things at MSU, it will be harder for him to win there, especially with UM and tOSU likely trending up. His salary is $1.8 million. Just throwing out another name in addition to those we’re already familiar with.

Hadn't thought of him for our vacancy yet, but I should have

Good points, and someone who should be on the short list.

Hadn't thought of the angle of UM and tOSU trending up

Plus Wisconsin is only getting better.

What do you all think about Wisconsin’s OC as a second tier candidate?

Sumlin should be a no go. Period.

by Nestor on Nov 27, 2011 10:37 AM PST up reply actions

Dantonio would be a solid hire

He made Cinci into a respectable program and has done some good things at MSU. His teams always seem to be well coached.

OK, Ajax, now you've gone too far.

You have been following UCLA as long as I’ve been on this board. Do you really expect anyone to believe you know what a “well coached” team looks like? Come on.

This won't happen

but I would love it if it did.

I would like to see a top-level candidate come out and say something like “Yes, UCLA asked me if I would be interested in the HC position there. I told them, no effing way. Their program has been mismanaged for so long, the last two decades, at least. If I had taken the position there, I would have been ground up like so much hamburger in their gears of incompetence.”

If a unified voice of students, alumni, and fans won’t rattle the ivory towerists’ cages, maybe some good old public ridicule would.

Wow

Other schools just keep stepping up except for UCLA. Even KU. Dear Lord.

or, another way of looking at it

The candidate list for the retread hire is getting longer!

DG misunderstands loyalty.

It’s not to Rick. It’s to the school. It’s not to himself. It’s to the school. It’s not to looking like he’s in control. It’s doing the right thing for the school, always. It’s called a fuduciary duty, something beyond his comprehension.

Since we all know Rick is toast, and has been since the Arizona game, the right thing is to fire him now, end the limbo and move forward. Better, we should have done this four weeks ago.

Another reason why DG is incompetent and should be fired. Then he can munch his donuts In peace.

And, Loyalty

to the kids on the team who are facing yet another pasting on national TV, and becoming the punchline to another volume of bad jokes.

Neuheisel cannot beat Oregon. Maybe no interim coach can either at this point, but Rick absolutely cannot. The kids on the team deserve the weight lifted off them for this last game. Burdening them with Neuheisel for back-to-back shellackings in a season rife with them is beyond merely being tone deaf.

What about Gus Malzahn?

He is probably the most innovative offensive mind in the game, and is due for a HC job. I know he hasn’t been a HC before, but that offense will be exciting and well coached.

UNC is gunning for him as well

My only concern with him is that Auburn hasn’t looked very hot w/o Cam Newton.

by Nestor on Nov 27, 2011 5:58 PM PST up reply actions

he

Could do great things with Brett hundly though

What he did at Tulsa is as impressive as with Newton last year

If both schools pursue him equally, we should have the easy advantage. That being said, who knows with us these days…..

Excellence v. Mediocrity

KU’s chancellor gets it. It’s important for a university to be excellent in all phases of its mission.

She is changing coaches to “… achieve the excellence we seek in Kansas football”.

For UCLA to reach to that same height, it has to replace both DG and RN. Can that be hard to understand?

There are only three candidates I would be happy with (in the order I would want them.....

1) Mike Leach: As I have explained before. This is a home run hire! The guy will rock the boat and hold the players accountable immediately. That is why he won’t get hired because he scares the shit out of DG. Like it or not, right now UCLA is the second program in the area behind USC right now and the top talent goes to the Trojans. To change that you need a guy who can go get the young athletic studs to run his offense at schools in the inner city and surrounding areas. Tough ass kids who are excited to play in a system that throws the ball around the yard. Leach would bring back fans instantly. He would create a buzz around town and Kiffen would be shaking in his boots. Skill position players would flock to Westwood right away. It would be fun and interesting and he would make UCLA instantly interesting and cool. That is what we need until he establishes his program and then gets all the 5 star guys who would want to play for him. Make no mistake, this guy can coach. He made a horrible Texas Tech program credible and their was a buzz in Lubbock that is still missing to this day.

2) Chris Petersen: Great coach, would be a great hire. From everything I am hearing this is the guy that is our #1 target. There is nothing negative about Petersen. He is a proven winner, runs a great offensive system that equally mixes in the run and the pass. He has developed good quarterbacks, and does more with less better than anyone in the country. Just imagine if this guy got stud talent? The sky is the limit and he brings instant credibility. I think he might be ready to make a move to as he is losing alot of talent this year and may not want to make the jump with Boise State to a major conference next year. Who knows. I would love to have him though.

3) Pat Fitzgerald, Northwestern: I have not heard anything……not even a rumor. However, I really like this guy and always have. He is young (36), energetic, his teams run a very good offensive system that has worked against good defenses in the Big Ten……not great defenses, but good. He coaches at a very good academic school where the restrictions are also very tough on student athletes. The main reason I like him is because his teams always compete. Always! They may not win every game, but it is Northwestern for christ sake. In the Big Ten they do about as well as can be expected. I know he is a Northwestern grad, but if we throw enough money at him I bet he would come. He is respected in the coaching community and would be a great hire…….just my two cents.

One last thing. I have heard from various people in the UCLA community that UCLA will talk to Herm Edwards. All I will say is that if they hire him, they better give DG a drug test because that would be a disaster.

Read on the Kansas sports nation blog the Mike Leach is rumored to be in Lawrence

And they had a link even to a flight from Key West he was supposed to have been on. If a school like Kansas hires him this week because we didn’t fire Rick, we should all be furious.

by donacciani on Nov 28, 2011 1:21 AM PST up reply actions

How easy can that comparison be?

It doesn’t get to 17 degrees in Westwood like it is in Lawrence now, nor will it snow on our beautiful campus. Plus, we have the benefit of actually knowing what conference we’ll be in for longer than just next year.

Roses are red, violets are blue...f*** $C.

Why not Al Borges?

Michigan’s offense has improved greatly, Al has UCLA ties, and his Denard Robinson schemes would fit pretty well with Brett Hundley running the attack.
