Neuheisel: I thought he was suppose to be smart or something…

He is smart... like a fox. The above sound bite is a huge, huge statement. See below.

So I guess all Rick has to do

is lose by LESS THAN 47 to the Ducks for him to claim that we are “moving the needle”.

by Blue Me on Nov 27, 2011 6:35 PM PST reply actions

My God, Rick!

Can’t you just please stop saying these things? It’s like undressing yourself in public. Just say you really tried and you’re sorry. We’re all sorry. Then resign.

O.O

I’m sure some thought it was a low blow when I wrote “CRN = Con Artist Rick Neuheisel” but this guy is delusional. Not joking at all, he really pulled one on us.

by BlueReign on Nov 27, 2011 7:19 PM PST reply actions

Ladies and Gentlemen, Attorney at Law, Rick Neuheisel:

“I was told that we needed to move the needle. And if the needle moved, then we would be fine, and I’d get to continue along my 5 years of my 5 year contract. I think the program is headed in the right direction. Despite the naysayers. And I believe that great things are on the horizon. Hopefully as early as this weekend.”

Damn! This dude is fighting like a mofo, and making his case clear… and public. This is using the media like nobody’s business.

You want Reality Comments? Let me break it down r e a l i t y …

1) They promised me something: “I was told” (oral contract, likely also in writing)

2) And here’s the promise, here’s the condition: “move the needle” “if the needle moved”. Damn! This is akin to aruguing how many hairs the prosecutors were allowed to get off OJ’s head (a whole swath, or just one hair). “Move the needle” is likely undefined. You know. Like puttin $2.00 of gas in your tank, when you really need $20.00. The needle moves on $2 bucks. Guess what. From a strict definition, 6-6 is a needle move from 4-8.

Behold: A cut and paste from Wikipedia:

Year School Overall Conf Place Bowl
2008 UCLA 4–8 3–6 8th
2009 UCLA 7–6 3–6 8th W EagleBank
2010 UCLA 4–8 2–7 9th
2011 UCLA 6–6 5–4 1st (South)
          UCLA: 20–27 12–22

In any legal setting (the law does not go by common parlance), clearly the “needle has moved” Rick see’s a 50% increase in overall wins. Rick see’s a 150% increase in conference wins. Rick see’s taking his team from the bottom of his competitive field to the top of his competitive field (Last to First). Clearly, the needle has, in fact, in reality, moved. I’m sure, there is no agreed upon definition of how much the needle needed to move… just move.

3) “we will be fine” hey, my job would be ok. don’t pack. don’t uproot family. nuttin.

4) "if…. "then (conditional statement. oral contract conditions)

5) “my 5 years, my 5 years contract” hey… Karl got 5. I argreed to 5. Don’t short me.

6) “headed in right direction” optimistic for future. my passion bucket is still on.

7) “as early as next weekend” I dare you to take me off that game.

Guys and gals… this has nothing to do with Coach Speak. Nothing at all. Dude is setting up his case in the public… just as he’s been doing since this season began.

Attorney Rick beat down on Conference School in a Court of Law. Everybody know’s it ain’t cool for coaches to be betting on kids in their own athletic department. Rick’s participation in the NCAA pool was likely purely innocent. However, when it turned into a legal matter… than he had to turn to the legal play-book. The legal setting is a different ball game.

I’m no lawyer. But I’ve won more than my share of pro per and pro se actions against “so-called” big boys, by being meticulous with law school education I do have (First year, 3 times. Another story).

Any other coach… and their booty woulda been long gone. But listen closely to the AD. Listen closely to the Chancellor. The AD has spoken with the AD at Washington, I’m sure. You mess with Rick Neuheisel, and that dude will hand you your a**. Dan is very careful not to say anything publically stupid, nor react in any way.

Bottom line: The needle has moved. Rick wins…. UCLA wins on Friday… and Rick Neuheisel will get his 5th year…or some kind of extra damages via settlement or lawsuit. This is Rick’s dream job. He will not walk away from it.

Sure… I’m sure him and the school can “settle”. So far, Rick doesn’t want settlement.
He wants one more year. Who knows. Maybe next year, he figures, we go 8-4 and defend our South Division Title.

Me. I want Rick gone. But reality says different. Also note, win or lose Friday, the needle has already moved.

Guy got his law degree from USC.

He can spin a bag of dog crap into a golden egg.

Admirable as an art form, reprehensible as a guy who’s allegiance should be to his alma mater.

I wouldn't call it reprehensible. Mostly because, we're talkin a job, paycheck,

wife (her needs, expectations), children (their needs, schooling, community). School love is great. But, man o man, as we get older, real life issues (not trying to lecture or insult), but real life takes over. To Rick, Coach is a real life job, and he’s in the fight for his life. Think about it, he fails here, miserably, and this might be his last coaching offer for a while. He may not be ready to leave football. Pete parlayed his school job. Harbaugh parlayed. Heck, even Karl got on with the Dolphins. Rick Neuheisel can’t afford to be “run out of dodge”. Especially after coming into this job with so much history and fanfare. Rick’s football career is on the line. I don’t think I’m being overly dramatic.

So you're honestly saying

that if we somehow win on Friday that Neu would then still have a chance for coaching offers elsewhere in the near future? Do you really think those hypothetical future potential employers would only see the laughingly-hypothetical win against Oregon and not the years of futility leading up to it?? He’s a coach; his wife is a coach’s wife. It’s understood in the business that jobs come and go. Yes, he wants to keep getting a paycheck. I’d like to keep getting his paycheck. Regardless,

Think about it, he fails here, miserably, and this might be his last coaching offer for a while.
I’ve thought about it. He’s failed here. Miserably.

boo freaking hoo

His football career is shot to hell at this point anyway. The last thing he could have done is preserve his dignity, intellectual honesty, and good will with the Bruin fan base. And I know it’s terribly sad to see a guy barely making it through with a $900,000, but I have the feeling that his family won’t get kicked out on the streets after he most deservingly loses his job.

by bruinbunz on Nov 28, 2011 7:17 AM PST up reply actions

Yes and no...

There’s a valid point in your comment (that’s unlikely to be granted by the very disappointed fans of Bruin football). In general his “positive talk” over the last few months has also been understandable… I mean if you are going to attempt to prepare a bunch of young men for the coming week’s contest you can’t accomplish much by saying “yeah, we suck, and none of my coaching team have much of a clue about how to fix it…” I do think his throwing “the kids” under the bus has happened too much in recent months.

Two points: 1) He’s said “I’m OK financially” (admittedly this could be bluster), and most importantly in this clip he says 2) “despite the naysayers…” After Arizona, after the white nightmare of the abject failure/collapse against Barky, Kitten, and the criminals… “naysayers” ?? Really? Really? That’s just insulting….

I don't blame Rick...

Yep…when I saw his “performance” in the news conference yesterday, my jaw dropped;

"I was told that we needed to move the needle. And if the needle moved, then we would be fine"

He had gotten a specific promise for a very nebulous measure of performance….good for you Rick. Fan fricken wonderful…

I dont blame Rick…I blame Grrr-error for this one. Making a promise for such an undefined, unspecific level of performance. And you can see the flip side of this in everything Grrr-error has been saying…the hey lets get excited because we’re playing for the Rose Bowl non-sense.

Absolutely great analysis “78”…Dan must go!

by GemCityBruin on Nov 28, 2011 6:48 AM PST up reply actions

Exactly

This is another failure on Guerrero, who is one of the worst managers I have ever seen. You never give someone a vague performance measure. “moving the needle”? WTF is that? That’s as good as his “I want to see the guys firing out” comment.

DG is a boob.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

by tasser10 on Nov 28, 2011 8:21 AM PST up reply actions

Totally agree

Both Dan and Rick’s comments in the last few weeks are nothing more than trying to keep their jobs by saying things that help them.

I don’t think that there’s anything he can sue UCLA for in a legal court of law. Saying that “you’ll get to stay for your last year if you move the needle” isn’t sufficiently detailed enough, or has enough consideration, for a contract. I think he’s just trying to play the chancellors and such by saying “hey, you said I would stay, and I’ve improved this team”.

... Sorry, I don't care how much good will Rick bought himself playing in the Rose Bowl in the past.

I’ve had enough of this loser… the guy has lost all credibility, and is either a complete moron and wildly delusional, or a selfish scumbag. Every time his mouth opens, I expect more complete and utter snake-oil-BS. To say what he said after the worst shellacking against $c in 81 years… If we’re “headed in the right direction”, well, clearly he doesn’t see that we’ve been heading down lower towards the pits of CFB hell ever since he stepped back on our campus. Maybe next year, we can lose to $c 77-0 at the Rose Bowl under his watch. GTFO, rick

Perhaps you guys have it all wrong...

When Neuheisel talks about moving the needle, he’s talking about the heroin injects he’s taking to create the delusional visions he needs to make it from day to day.

Well, technically...

I guess he is moving the needle… in the wrong direction. Kind of like in the movies where a plane is plummeting towards the earth and all the needles are going haywire.

by bruinbunz on Nov 28, 2011 7:20 AM PST up reply actions

HE'S ABSOLUTELY CORRECT..

..so long as the needle is attached to the seismograph at Cal Tech. And it got moved plenty last Saturday night.

Funny thing is, it seems to have similarly moved for one November/December weekend in each of his past four seasons..

2011 USC 50 UCLA 0
2010 USC 28 UCLA 14
2009 USC 28 UCLA 7
2008 USC 28 UCLA 7

..and four other times this season..

Texas L 20 – 49
Stanford L 19 – 45
Arizona L 12 – 48
Utah L 6 – 31

Right direction? If one’s target is a few laps around the toilet bowl and then into the septic tank then, sure, this program’s headed in the right direction.

Lipstick on a pig? Hell, this hog’s got lipstick, rouge, false eyelashes, a halter top, mini skirt, fishnet stockings and high heels!

Posted in an earlier thread...

But rick’s comments are about as delusional as the UCLA Fund contacting me last night, soliciting a donation…ARE YOU F-ING KIDDING ME GUYS!!!? I was absolutely appalled that the UCLA Fund had the nerve to contact, less than 24 hours following quite possibly the worst loss in UCLA football history. A poor student got an earful from me, for about ten minutes, after he solicited a donation from me, for as he described, “the academic aspect of the University”. Prior to basically telling the student to, “F-off”, I first apologized, for the tongue lashing he was going to receive, and told him I could not believe the school was putting him up to this task, following that game.

I refuse to give one penny, one minute of my time, or energy to this school, minus the time that I will now spend here on this website, to post. I am sick, and coming to work this morning, in an overly trogan office is an absolutely painful experience…since I no longer have any ammo with which to fight back. The nerve, the audacity of UCLA admin to seek donations, following the debacle, is evidence to me that this issue is bigger than just chianti dan and rick.

by meow meow on Nov 28, 2011 8:14 AM PST reply actions

Be nice to the people calling you

they are just students trying to earn money to pay for school.

You should be polite about your reasons for not giving, so they can note it down and if enough people do it, it will be noticed.

Don’t abuse a poor student just trying to make ends meet.

by silverlakebruin on Nov 28, 2011 10:07 AM PST up reply actions

Just to clarify, I never actually told the student to "F-off".

My tongue lashing was directed towards the administration, and my apology centered around the fact that someone higher up tasked him with soliciting donations, less than twenty four hours following the debacle. At times, his counter arguments seemed very Morgan Center-esque, so i took the time to educate him on what the UCLA brand meant to me, when I was a student from ‘95-’00. Additionally, I tried to encourage him to take action as a student, and that i actually felt for him being a student in this current environment (exorbitant tuition fees, joke in all major revenue generating sports, etc.).

So, forgive me if you think I was abusive…maybe my post seemed a bit harsh, given that I typed it as my office colleagues whistled, “Tusk”, in the background…but the original point of my post is to show that the administration is completely brain dead, tasking students with soliciting donations less than twenty four hours following the debacle. I get the students’ plight, I was one myself trying to make ends meet, working for parking services for years, to do just that…so I get that, and would never abuse a student. But, educating them and providing them a different perspective of what UCLA should mean, is what I attempted to convey during our conversation. And I was polite, that’s why the “F-bomb” was never uttered, nor any other such words.

what is Rick supposed to say: I suck and should be fired?

Rick needs to be fired immediately, but I am not mad at him for this nonsense, I am mad at Guerrero for putting him in the position where he is still the face and voice of the program.

by socali177 on Nov 28, 2011 10:15 AM PST via mobile reply actions

I Blame Donahue

For putting CRN in this terrible position. As someone wrote earlier (to paraphrase): “He didn’t have the balls to promote CRN from wr coach to OC.” Just another example of CTD keeping people down to make his mediocre self look better. I was attending at the time and it seemed that CRN was passionate and ready for the bump up. I think CRN should have been given his chance then. Obviously two other major football universities thought he was ready. This was his dream job and Donahue, in typical fashion, f#ked him. I can just see him sitting somewhere reveling in his glorious accomplishments…his legacy (in his mind and in the minds of those he fooled) intact. I am not fooled. I lay the blame for Rick’s “situation” squarely at the feet of Terry “punk-ass sweater wearing” Donahue. The window of opportunity was there. That window closed and Rick has been trying to open it from that day forward. I don’t blame him. I blame Donahue for setting in motion a series of events that have put our program on a downward trajectory all for the sake of his ego and “legacy”. CRN got fQed almost 20 years ago..We might have been a little more tolerant if it weren’t for CKD (what a complete dumb-ass hire that was). How does this opinion help our current situation? I’m not sure except to say that I can’t stand watching a guy get blown up and turned into a scapegoat while the true culprit in smugly enjoying all of this from the shadows. This current situation sure makes TD look like an all-star, doesn’t it? I can only imagine that TD is sitting somewhere secretly loving the way this debacle is unfolding…

Sure, GrrError is the problem now and we should get rid of him, but the suggestions for going forward are all over the place. Fire CRN. Fire CD. We’re going to miss out on our next hire. But we don’t want Dan doing it. Who’s going to hire the new coach if Dan is fired now? Will no good coaches be available next year?

I agree change needs to come (and let’s get that started), but can we do it in some systematic and dignified way a la Forward Rebels and an Executive Search Committee? I think it’s gotten as bad as it can get (50-0). Let’s make sure we get it right.

by Geronimo21 on Nov 28, 2011 10:44 AM PST via mobile reply actions

Yup

This can all be traced to Donahue, as detailed in this post here which is where you’re quoting from.
