Around SBN: Following UFC 146 Loss, Jason 'Mayhem' Miller 'Done' in UFC

Rick Neuheisel picked up another verbal committment from last night. The latest edition to our class is kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn from Punahou (HI). He is reportedly He is rated the No. 4 kicker in the country by Chris Sailer.

In the post linked above Gold also had some video of our other commitment picked up few days ago Trinity (Texas) High safety Laiu Moeakiola.

We welcome both of these gentlemen to Westwood. However, the news doesn't change the big picture which is a bleak and stale recruiting scene as our current class is mired well below top-25, ranked number 47 in the nation. Then again Neuheisel hasn't been able to do much with top ranked recruiting classes he secured in his first 3 years at UCLA.

GO BRUINS.

UPDATE (N):
I clearly didn't have enough coffee when I wrote this in the am. Otherwise, I wouldn't have missed that Gold had mentioned Bruins also picked up Compton Dominguez OL Lacy Westbrook. As mentioned on BRO Westbrook is #13 ranked OG in the nation. This is good. Welcome Lacy. GO BRUINS.

Like these pickups

Big Uglies are always needed and Lacy is supposed to be a good one.

Recent history suggests that we get a punter and redshirt him during Locke senior year so he’s ready to go as a RS FR. Makes me wonder what is going on with Kip or if he’ll even be sticking around. I don’t even remember if we’ve ever used 4 rides for these positions. Seems excessive considering the low schoolie count for this class.

Although the ranking doesn’t look pretty, there are some good prospects that I like. When the new HC comes around, I’m sure this class is going to look a lot different and the schoolie situation will play itself out with transfers and such. Gonna be interesting.

Rankings will shoot up

If UCLA brings in a tier 1 coach at the end of the season. Reading between the lines these kids like Westbrook are committing to our school, not the coaching staff. They are going for the whole package featuring education and football. Education part will be taken care of. They will be better served if UCLA makes the right move and brings in an elite coaching stuff who will make the Bruins one the Westcoast powerhouses (on the field) again.

Great pick up.

Ka’imi is an awesome kicker, the best I’ve seen in Hawaii. Just last week I was talking up UCLA to him. The potential change in coach didn’t seem to be a factor as much as the overall package of the school. Not to mention the potential immediate playing time. GO PUNS!

I was surprised

when I learned Lakalaka was coming to UCLA. He is a north/south, bruising runner similar to Coleman, however, lacks his size and speed. However, he is a quality kid, hard worker and tough as nails.

808 what do you think of Buckner...

is he having a good year? UCLA is recruiting him pretty hard and he is supposed to be a legit prospect.

Buckner

is a beast. I hear he is leaning towards Cal. Punahou has another 6’7" DE Luke Kaumatule playing opposite side of Buckner. Unfortunately he has given verbal to Stanford.

Go PUNS?

Like he’d be kicking himself if he didn’t choose UCLA or that this really gives our class a kick in the pants?

ROFL

That exchange just won the Internet!

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

Yeah

I figured. I said that just for kicks.

Re: Westbrook

From my admittedly untrained eye, I notice a few things in his video (on Gold’s blog).
1. He has absolutely perfect size.
2. He looks fairly strong, especially his upper body.
3. Like most high school OL, he tends to stand upright too quickly.
4. He’ll need to be quicker with his feet.

That said, he looks like a great project (as is true with most OL), and has great size. Welcome Lacy! And welcome Ka’imi and Laiu!

The last Westbrook we had

turned into a pretty fair player…

Roses are red, violets are blue...f*** $C.

Westbrook...

needs to hit the weight room hard. He has huge upside because he has good feet and size.
