My hope for UCLA football has been sliced in half

It's 4th down and we're in the red zone, down by 6 with 4:00 minutes left to play. Here is a recap of this set of downs: First down - Karl Dorrell, Second down - Rick Neuheisel, Third down - watching one of two Bruin Nation favorites accept a job at Washing State. What are you going to on Fourth down, Dan? Punt? Run up the middle? You are so predictable, Dan. You will run up the middle, time will run out on the next possession, and UCLA fans will be left wondering where you went wrong.

I almost screamed today when I found out Mike Leach was hired by Washington State. A school that has such weak sports history. A school who's last national championship was in 1977 and the one (and only) before that was in a sport that NCAA doesn't even sponsor anymore (boxing). How is it that they had the guts to go out and defy the almighty Craig James and hire Mike Leach? How is it that Mike Leach, who has hinted at the UCLA job for a while now, was hired by another school only days into UCLA's coaching search? How much control does Gene Block have over our athletic department? And why has nobody done a freedom of information request for any correspondence between Stanford Gene and Chianti Dan regarding Mike Leach or Chris Petersen?

There is only one logical name left that can keep flying - Chris Petersen. As the days go on, that seems less and less likely. Although I like the suggestion of Bob Stoops that CHS threw out this morning. So, here is a list that I am guessing 98% of Bruin Nation would agree is better or at least as good as Mike Leach or Chris Petersen.

  • Les Miles
  • Nick Saban
  • Bobby Petrino
  • Jim Harbaugh
  • Chip Kelley
  • Mike Gundy
  • Bob Stoops
Mull that over for a while...
Getting back to the candidates at hand.
  • Kevin Sumlin? He MIGHT be a good coach, but he is riding the wave of one of the best quarterbacks ever (that he didn't even recruit) and getting out of dodge when Keenum graduates. Do you know who else did that? (See Butch Jones)
  • Butch Jones - another candidate that rode on the back of one of the best quarterbacks in MAC history and one of the best quarterbacks during his four years in school nationally (The year Tim Tebow won the Heisman, only 2 quarterbacks put up 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards - Tebow and Dan LeFevour. I think they may be only 2 of 3 QBs to ever do it in college, but I am too lazy to do the research on it, just like Done Guerrero is probably too lazy to do the research on Butch and Kevin).
  • Tom Cable? Are you freaking kidding me? Just because he is showing interest doesn't mean we should be interested back. This would be the worst case of institutional beer goggles that ever existed.
  • DeWayne Walker? If he is being considered because he is INTERESTED, well, let me throw my name into the mix, because I would love to be UCLA's head football coach.
Is this the best we've got? Because if it is, I will spend my Saturdays next fall watching football on the Palouse. At least their AD (who I mentioned in a comment a few days ago would be a great replacement for Done Guerrero) who knows the difference between appeasement and winning. Dan, just because your baby (baseball) was so bad up until a few years ago doesn't mean you have to nosedive every other sport.
Well Dan, if Chris Petersen turns you down, I hear the the linebackers coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders is interested in the job.
