Stated Priorities of UCLA

Read this:

http://chancellor.ucla.edu/priorities

This lists all of the priorities of the Chancellor.  They are:

1. Academic excellence

2. Civic engagement

3. Diversity

4. Financial Security

You will notice that the words "athletics" or "undergraduate experience" or pretty much anything other other than research, money and diversity are mentioned in the Chancellor's priorities.  Basically, he doesn't care one whit about football or athletics at all.  So from this I do not expect Guerrero to be fired or for anyone in the AD department to change their culture.  And certainly no one is going to make any effort to build an on campus stadium or improve the football facilities.  We can wish for it all we want, but the Chancellor is telling us that he just isn't that into us.  Why aren't we listening to what he is telling us?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

I don't think too much can be read into that source

while I don’t disagree with all of your conclusions, I don’t think those bullet points are strong evidence. I present you with the University of Alabama’s strategic goals:

   1. Advance the University’s academic, research, scholarship and service priorities, consistent with a top tier university, and continue to promote growth and national prominence in these areas.
   2. Retain and recruit outstanding faculty and staff to support the teaching, research and service mission of the University.
   3. Enhance the University’s learning environment to attract and retain excellent students.
   4. Develop a university-wide emphasis on leadership as a primary role of the flagship university of the State of Alabama.

Notice the lack of the words “football” and “Make Coach Saban filthy rich”.

Exactly.

I’ve posted a couple times that his wife told me athletics were not on his priority list. Hard to believe a Chancellor wouldn’t capitalize on the branding opportunity and revenue stream that a successful football program would provide. Give me Chuck Young any day – he started UCLA on the track of being one of the top public universities in the nation while being on the sideline for football games all the time. We need another Chancellor like him – not an ivory tower egghead like Block.

Young was all talk

he was a cheerleader on the sidelines but did nothing to really push the UCLA brand into extreme territories. His academics work though is very esteemed.

Didn't we go through this the other day?

Franklin Murphy was the chancellor who started UCLA on that track. Chuck Young had a pretty wild ride in the early 70s (ask Bill Walton). The whole UC system boomed during the rest of his tenure, but it’s absolutely true that UCLA athletics—especially the nonrevenue sports—became the premier program in the country during that time. Basketball and football—one hoops title (or was that after he left?), Terry Donahue.

Young was a great fund raiser, though, and became a sort of Mr. Fixit in his retirement, serving as interim chancellor of the University of Florida, for example.

It's not hard to imagine this is true.

And, if it is, it only underscores Dan’s failed leadership. In the absence of a strong directive from on high to move UCLA Football forward, it really falls on his shoulders to make the case. It should be his office that is providing all the numbers of all the millions of dollars we are leaving on the table by not demanding a Football Program that competes.

We can't vote Block out of office

He is truly no different from the Middle Eastern guys who rule forever or thought they would. The only way Block leaves office is if it is made to unconfortable for him to stay in office. We would never and could never do anything to affect his first two priorities, and his idea of diversity is different from ours. He doesn’t think that diversity includes tweaking the admission requirements to account for athletic excellence. But he will not be thrown out of office for that.

The only way we can get him out is to hurt him in his fourth priority – money. Somehow we have to find out who the benefactors are and convert them to our way of thinking. We have to explain tough love, and this won’t be easy, in light of the limited success with people who are denizens of BN. There are many who think it’s morally wrong to stop donating. I think exactly the opposite. It’s necessary to experience the monetary pain while the diseased tissue is excised. There has to be a complete cessationof UCLA as an economic entity. In my opinion.

Guess who???

“…A native of Monticello, New York, xxxxxxx holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Stanford University and a master’s and Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Oregon. …”

Why in the f*#k would this person xxxxxxx, with absolutely zero ties or loyalty to UCLA or sports background, give a rat’s a$$ about UCLA sports or UCLA football or sports, in general?

At least Young

was a “cheerleader on the sidelines” vs. Block who doesn’t give a crap. I agree that Franklin Murphy originally started UCLA on the track of being a premier public university – and Young did a good job of keeping us there – all the while being a fan of the athletic dept.
