NYT CFB Writer Channels BruinsNation, Blasts Dan Guerrero’s Hire of Jim Mora

Last week we noted the New York Times highlighting of BruinsNation's all out pressure on athletic director Dan Guerrero. The Old Gray Lady has been keeping a close eye on the pressure this community is bringing to bear on UCLA's sommelier. The NTY's writer Paul Meyerberg has now followed with a scathing column torching Guerrero for the hiring of Jim Mora.

Meyerberg is the lead writer of Pre Snap Read, a NYT associated college football blog which is one of the best reads in the business. He doesn't mince his words on Mora:

The latest coach to make the wires, former Falcons and Seahawks coach Jim Mora, possesses a year-by-year record that reads like an eye chart: 11-5, 8-8, 7-9, 5-11. The wins get smaller the farther down you go. But this is U.C.L.A., and this is Guerrero, and the latter's history of bumbling the steps needed to create a winning football program does not give many reason for optimism. ...

[T]his is a coach who wore out his welcome in Atlanta in three years, thanks in part to the touch that led the Falcons from within one win of the Super Bowl to back-to-back non-winning seasons. Mora lasted four months with the Seahawks in 2009, leaving three years and $12 million remaining on his contract. At neither stop did he - how to put this - endear himself to his team, bosses or fan base.

Nevertheless, all signs point to Mora. He's Guerrero's pick, which counts for something - it counts for everything, in fact. If he's the choice, U.C.L.A. will go from a coach who wanted nothing more than to be in Westwood to a coach who wore out his welcome at each of his major stops.

Meyerberg also tore Guerrero apart for his lack of preparedness during coaching search by comparing his botched effort to the methodical ones conducted by Washington State's Bill Moos and Arizona's Greg Byrne:

[G]uerrero and the university should have known Neuheisel was working on borrowed time; Guerrero himself said on Oct. 18 that "returning to a bowl is just one of several steps we need to take to get this program to the level we all desire." With the current coach firmly affixed to the hot seat, why didn't U.C.L.A. begin investigating future options in early November, if not sooner?

Guerrero and the Bruins are adrift. Lost without a paddle. In deep water, and the only possible conclusion is this: U.C.L.A. has no idea what it's doing. How else can you explain a search that started without a plan and has rapidly deteriorated into a free-for-all - worse yet, a search that seems to have no endgame? Hiring Jim Mora can't be the grand plan, can it?

Read the full piece here.

Star-divide

As Nestor said earlier this am, if you are a UCLA alum, student or fan, there are lot of reasons to be upset about the process that resulted in the Mora hire. This is not something Bruins should forget about for the sake of supporting a new coach.

So if you have a moment today, make sure to call the Chancellor's office (1-310-825-2151) and demand some accountability from Gene Block today.

I think Dan knew what he was doing

IMO, he played this exactly how he usually does. Throw out all these top coaching names as candidates he’s going to go after. Say things that make it sound like he’s gonna do everything the right way. Before you know it, everybody is saying no to him and it’s not his fault. He hires the guy who comes to him and has no other offers.

He just likes to be done with coaching searches. Hell if it were up to him we’d still have xCRN…you know, since he moved the needle.

Go Bruins!

There's a more recent column

Here:
http://www.presnapread.com/there-is-only-one-pete-carroll-u-c-l-a/

The Mora hire reeks of desperation. And the worst kind of desperation: misguided desperation, the sort aimed in the absolutely wrong direction. The Bruins needed a proven college coach, if only because this specific team — the one heading into 2012 — has enough talent to be a Pac-12 South contender. Instead, the Bruins will hit an inevitable learning curve; more specifically, Mora will need a learning curve.

I suppose there was no other way this disastrous coaching search could end. U.C.L.A.’s search started strong, with an offer going out to Chris Petersen and inquiries towards Al Golden, but ended with an unbelievable whimper.

Or a shrug, as it’s clear that athletic director Dan Guerrero did little homework in his search and cares even less about the future of this football program.

I wouldn’t describe Pre-Snap Read as a New York Times-associated blog, though. Myerberg has written for the NYT’s the Quad, but nothing on PSR makes any claims to an affiliation with the NYT. They go out of their way on the home page to state that it’s unaffiliated and independent.

by Westwood Wizard on Dec 12, 2011 10:17 AM PST reply actions

I think

You can make the case. Meyerberg does right for the NYT. PSR rankings IIRC have been adopted by NYT’s Quad blog before. So while they are not officially connected, they are more than loosely affiliated. Still to your point we will slightly edit the title. Thanks WW.

Read the full columns. They are excellent.

They both torch the entire hiring process and decision.

We can only hope we get lucky because Mora is young and rah-rah and he proves to be an excellent recruiter and motivator. Above all, may he be a solid disciplinarian and turns an historically soft program into a hard nosed unit.

CONFIDENTIAL memo leaked from the athletic department!!!

INTER-ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT MEMO (CONFIDENTIAL)

To: Mr. Dan Guerrero

From: Jentz

"Look, Dan, we are going to have some natural attrition in the WAF ranks after last FB season, this BB season and the poor hiring of Mora to replace Slick Rick. Now, at the same time, we will keep some die-hard WAF donors that will keep shelling out money no matter what. Anyway, I digress. So, at the same time, some former WAF donors that left over the Dorrell and Rick eras will come back to try out the new coach. And some may actually like the hire. So we crunched some numbers from the last three coaching changes, developed an algorithm for factoring in the economy, the record in FB, the relative looks of the dance team, the performance of Gordon Henderson in conference home game nation anthems, plus selected card stunts by the rally committee, but only those after school starts and before the winter break, average attendance, normalized it for the "I Be Headin’ to the Wood Someday" and the "I wants to be Joe Someday" promotions, adjusted it for concessions by type quantity and volume per paid attendee, and reduced it based on the increase in stank in the RB bathrooms due to age and lack of maintenance. Here’s what we found out: If we send out a promotion to push the WAF immediately after the Mora hiring we will kill two birds with one stone. Based on the data, we will have a .00659872 increase in WAF donors Year-Over-Year, and (2) by pumping out various messages from UCLA, we will deflect some of the attention on the bad hire, thus further enhancing the WAF revenue because the stupid and weak will be overcome with blind passion. The full 385 page report, with illustrations and charts, appendices and exhibits will be on you desk in the morning!"

"Let’s discuss right after the churro presentation from Sweets and Eats at tomorrows meeting. I’m excited about their projected cost savings by substituting 4.6578 inch churros for the current 4.6580 inch offering. No one will miss the .0002 inches and it should generate $143.62 per home game. However, we must make sure we will not be charged for the new tooling for the shorter die! They have to eat that cost. And, yes, I reminded them to bring you extra samples this time!"

When the NYT is writing about CA sports, you know there s a huge problem.

by 1970 on Dec 12, 2011 10:38 AM PST reply actions

Basically what the NYT article said...

We first came to the auto dealership trying to buy a Mercedes Benz, then came down to a Lexus, to a Honda and instead of riding the bus back home we took a 1974 Ford Pinto. The article sums what we all here a BN knew all along. Just a quick question maybe some of you might now, but the Rose Bowl attendance is usually about 50 thousand right? I wonder how many will show up starting next season. Or will Guerrero give out more free tickets to radio stations like ESPN Deportes Radio (in Spanish) like he has the past few seasons to help fill the stadium? I am not going to watch UCLA football, as I don’t support mediocrity. One of my professors once told me after a poorly written paper, “that mediocrity was the level of excellence for underachievers.” He told me i know your not an underachiever because your at UCLA, he gave me my poorly written back and had me write that paper one more time. Why was that criteria not used to hire a coach?

Because.....

….your UCLA professor was not involved in establishing the hiring process. That was entrusted to DG who is not held to the same level of excellence as UCLA faculty or students.

by tazmiami on Dec 12, 2011 10:55 AM PST up reply actions

Why!

Maybe my professor should have been consulted in the hiring process. I, honestly, don’t see us being relevant in a long time. It seems we will walk around the dessert for another 40 years.

It is Tough

First of all I must mention I did not attend UCLA, however was born blue and gold and raised to hate the Trojan by an alumnus Dad who I watched every game with on Saturday my entire youth and early adulthood. I own nothing but UCLA college gear and jerseys and go to games yearly in support of the 8-clap all over the state and jump with excitement when UCLA is on a tear and get frustrated and saddened with all of you when we come up short or fail. I was neutral when ex-CRN was hired but felt everyone’s emotions when reading BruinsNation. That being said….

This hire just angers me!!!! I do hope that somehow and out of somewhere Mora does the unthinkable and brings this program to an elite status where it should be. Yet, the numbnuts in Block and DG tucking tail and running to the easiest hire rather than truly working for a change makes me wonder how in the world do these people have jobs? As it has been reiterated over and over, this was a time for change and a bright new future of excitement, hope and the rebuilding of fans, alumni and top-caliber recruits. Yet here we are going into the Holiday season with the lackluster feeling that all we did was switch the names of the coach and will continue to see a football team compete at a mediocre level while the Numbnuts up top say “We are Awesome, May I have another round please!”

Ominously damning..

..coming from the NYT sports pages and a news organ notoriously myopic when it comes to West Coast sports. (cf. Big East, ACC, and other basketball prejudices.) That this would misstep would be fodder for the Times indicates that this massive stench has found its way East.

It is also instructive that Mora lasted three years in Atlanta. Perhaps the sunny part of this deal is that he will stink up the barn, get testy with the fans (and vice-versa), cut a deal with a pro team somewhere and exit before the usual Chianti-Dan-Coach-Half-Life period of 4-5 years.

If (1) we keep the heat going about Senor Stink Bomb and his third failed hire and (2) we don’t let them get away with the “rebuilding” BS (sorry to harp on this), then maybe we can chase both of these butt wipes out of town before too long.

Slight correction..

In light of the comment above, specifically:

I amend my references to the NYT. the observations about this situation making it all the East coast is still valid, however.

Being a Bruin in OC just got worse

Not like it hasn’t been tough already living in Trogan country, but it’s gotten really bad. Maybe I’m seeing too much into things, but I swear UCLA’s current state has officially made it open season on clowing Bruins. Sorta off topic but, I went into a bakery to buy some pastries for my staff, and when I pulled out my Alumni credit card to pay, the effing kid working there tried to clown me and made snark comments like UCLA payment wasn’t accepted. So I ordered 5 more boxes of pastries, had him ring it up to something like over $120 bucks, told him I changed my mind, gave him the finger and walked out.

I’m so friggin pissed man. It’s like I’m a walking bullseye or something.

The comments I usually get are

“You’re the first guy with a UCLA hat I’ve seen all day”

“You’re pretty brave”

“UCLA? ouch…”

These are comments from random people…none of whom I envy, but if anyone else tells me that athletics don’t matter, I’m going to take a dump in their sandwich.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

The problem is expectation

It’s unusual and it stands out when UCLA sucks at anything. You could wear a NC State sweater and no one would really say anything…but they expect UCLA to be good.

ps: it’s interesting for Gene Block to say that the Medical School is the face of the university, when they have had one of the most embarrassing scandals ever with the cadaver scandal…

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

I actually wear Bruin gear more nowadays.

1. To prove I’m no fair-weather front runner.

2. Anyone who asks/jokes about it gets an earful about the real problems with our teams.

3. To give some hope for the other Bruins who are in hiding. I’ve had numerous Bruins in the area say that don’t want to wear their gear. I tell them it’s more important than ever to wear it now.

This is probably the eye chart Meyerberg is refering to.

Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all the time thing. You don't win once in a while; you don't do things right once in a while; you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing. ~ Vince Lombardi

alumni urged to tell the chancellor guerrero must go

When you call (1-310-825-2151), a very accomodating secretary who seems knowledgable of the subject matter will listen, record at least the gist of your vehemence and pass it on. Encrouaged: Include your bone fides (e.g., ‘72 Ucla grad). I also was sure to leave mention that via phone i lobby Sacramento to increase the UC budget by corporate taxation (back when Ucla was almost a free campus for California students, albeit with a strong gpa admissions policy, corporate taxation accounted for that freedom of higher education for those who were qualified, and the economy thrived with such a policy), so i don’t sound only like a more-dismissable sports fan.

Tell the chancellor the AD must be replaced. Suggest the post be filled with a specific name if you have one, as a guide for the lame brained.

BTW we need to read such names for us to recommend on these pages. If we form a consensus on one or two and inundate his office with their specific recommendation, the chancellor may follow his pattern of listening to people who know better than he.

I just called the Chancellor's office...

and had a very nice chat with the very polite secretary. I told her I was a professor at Northwestern Univeristy (just in case I needed some academic creditials) and that I wanted to express my concerns regarding the recent hiring process of our new head football coach. I also suggested that the link between academic and athletic excellence is very important and that it should be much stronger at UCLA. I also told her that I thought a good example of the right way to conduct a head football coach could be seen at the University of Michigan (my other school). I asked if I could send an email to the chancellor and she responded yes, at “”mailto:chancellor@ucla.edu" target="_blank">chancellor@ucla.edu." Time to write my emai.

My Email to Chancellor Block (follow-up to my email sent after the 0-50 embarrassment)

Dear Chancellor Block,

I wrote you the email below 2 weeks ago on the night of our Bruin football team’s embarrassing 0-50 loss to USC. I am flabbergasted that not only has the situation not improved, it has in fact gotten worse. After the hiring of Jim Mora, the UCLA athletic department is now the laughing stock of college football (PLEASE read these two New York Times articles that beautifully describe in eloquent fashion how everyone views the UCLA football coach search process: Guerrero-Led U.C.L.A. Is Taking on Water and There Is Only One Pete Carroll, U.C.L.A.)

I want to be the first to recognize that UCLA is much more than athletics. It is first and foremost an institution of high education, and a very good one at that. However, athletics is an absolutely integral part of campus life at UCLA and part of the university’s very heart and soul. If you agree, then you must remove Mr. Guerrero from his position as Athletic Director. And if you disagree, then you are not the right man for the job of UCLA Chancellor.

Since graduating with two degrees from UCLA two years ago, I have received multiple solicitations to donate money to the university. Despite having the financial means to do so, I cannot in good conscious donate to a school whose administration appears ambivalent towards maintaining the institution’s reputation. Academic reputation and athletic reputation are not mutually exclusive. Success in athletics can bring additional revenue to a school that, if managed correctly, can contribute greatly to academic endeavors as well. Thus, it deeply saddens me to see the utter mismanagement of UCLA’s athletic department. Until Mr. Guerrero is fired, I will withhold donating any funds to UCLA. I know many other alumni doing the same.

MR. GUERRERO MUST GO.

Chancellor Block, please do not disappoint. Make me proud to call myself a Bruin again. I am more than happy to discuss my feelings about the state of UCLA athletics (shared with the vast majority of my fellow alumni) in more detail with you. My contact information is below. Together, let us restore UCLA to the glory and illustriousness it deserves!

by Nick McGhie on Dec 12, 2011 2:49 PM PST reply actions

Well said

I graduated from UCLA dental in 2000 and have seen our football and basketball go into the tank. It is too depressing to even try to argue with a trojan or others about the state of our athletics. Things used to never be like this. How can a chancellor ignore numerous alumni that has flooded his office with calls? I feel Guerrero does not care one bit about the alumni’s opinions. And I am starting to feel that Block does not care either.
As alumni, we allhave financial means to support our alma mater. But, in agreement with you, I am also withholding financial support for UCLA until those clowns are receptive to our demands. I have called numerous times to the Chancellor’s office and the Wooden Athletic Fund but so far, no callbacks. I have for the first time cancel my season tickets to football and basketball. I would rather find something else to do then watch crappy product put out by Guerrero and Block. As of December 10, 2011, with the hire of Moron, my passion for UCLA sports has died.
