SBN Arizona is reporting that UCLA is closing on Broussard, Mazzone likely to follow. We'll wait for official confirmation, but it's an interesting development.

Yeah, I like them both.

Broussard supposedly has the Long Beach Poly pipeline and I like Mazzone a lot

If Mazzone is indeed in play

I like the fact that Mora is going with someone who is known for running a cutting edge college offense as oppose to bringing in some retread running ball control/WCO.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

That doesn't really matter so much to me

In my opinion, they all work fine and I don’t think we are particularly better suited for one over the other in the long-term. I don’t think the offense we run is necessarily going to change the attitude of the program either. For me, this is exciting because Mazzone is a damn good OC, regardless of the system.

I'm always curious about pillaging from the coaching staff of a fired head coach

ASU massively underachieved this year – did the work of these guys stand out from the rest of the underachievement? (asked as a genuine question, not as snark – the only ASU game I watched they really had no shot against a Bruin juggernaut…)

I'd say that ASU's biggest underachievement was their D.

It was supposed to be dominant and was just okay. Their offense averaged over 450 a game.

Broussard has been really successful as a position coach everywhere he’s gone.

If Mazzone brings the offense he ran at ASU and at NC State back when Phillip Rivers was there, we will certainly be watching a more entertaining UCLA team next year.

In the Pac-12

I just don’t think you’ll see a dominating defense anywhere. It’s a scoring league. You have to keep up and just have a decent defense. If you have a good defense, you’re competing for the conference championship. If you have a great defense…ooooh mama.

IMHO, the scheme is less important in defense than in offense. You need athletes to bust up plays on defense, even if they’re not doing their assignment all the time. Then again, you could have a Tresey whose scheme (did he even have one) negates any athletic ability..

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

These are both really good gets.

ASU kills recruiting in the Valley and Temecula area. I’d imagine these guys are big reasons why.

According to the article

It’s already a done deal. As you stated though, it would be wise to wait on a official announcement.

we've seen elsewhere

that Mazzone may be waiting. Reports are he’s hoping that he’ll get a chance for the ASU HC job, but I don’t know if that’s realistic or not.

by Odysseus on Dec 13, 2011 11:08 AM PST up reply actions

Agreed

Despite showing promise, I think the ASU fan base is expecting a proven HC to be hired. Not so sure they’d give Mazzone a chance.

If ASU hires Wittingham

as has been rumored, I wonder who Utah would go after…would they promote Norm Chow? They’ll need to keep up too…

Can we find some coaches...

…that teach how to tackle from day 1?

by impaulv on Dec 13, 2011 11:31 AM PST reply actions

I have a feeling

our tackling issues were far more related to strength & conditioning than to teaching…

I wish

But I saw numerous shoulder charge tacvkles that were airballs. So much so that I honestly wondered if there was an attempt to miss. But I’m not touching that conspiracy theory!

As for S & C, though, I totally agree. In the pac 12 Championship, one of Oregon’s LBs blitzed and completely bowled over Maiava. Decleated him. The hieght of embarrassment for an OL.

Maiava...

he who likes the ganja…

I would love this.

But does anyone else have a feeling “DG” is going to happen. lol

Hahaha so do I.

But my screw up radar is going crazy right now.

dg has Greg Robinson tapped for the DC job

He loved his defenses in the ’90s!

Buy Noel Mazzone, get Amanda Pflugrad free?

Seems like I’m the only one who’s excited about Mazzone purely because of his future daughter-in-law.

Per Chris Foster's Twitter

“Steve Broussard, receivers coach at Arizona, will join Mora’s staff, a person in the UCLA program said.”

This article is worth clicking-through and reading.

This part is key for us:

“With so many of ASU’s coveted recruiting class tied to those two men, the outreach to transition the recruit’s commitments to UCLA has already begun, and the damage there can not be undersold. This recruiting class was the one that would help ASU turn the corner from sleeping giant to Pac-12 power; the one that would lay the foundation for another golden era of Sun Devils football.

It very well could prove to be the catalyst in turning around a once proud program, but it will be the Bruins of UCLA instead of the sleeping Devils of ASU."
