UCLA vs. Eastern Washington Eagles Game Thread

Eastern Washington Eagles at UCLA Bruins, Dec 14, 2011 7:30 PM PST

Photo

The Bruins return to the "friendly" confines of the LA Sports Arena to take on Eastern Washington. The "Road Show" as it has been called has been a disaster in this particular venue with a 1-3 record, the lone win coming against lowly Pepperdine. It goes without saying that win #2 had better be forthcoming tonight. As we noted in our preview, the Eagles are a marginally better team than Penn. While UCLA appeared to have the clear upper hand throughout in our last game in the Honda Center, Penn was able to keep it close at the end and pull to within two possessions. Even if Penn rode some hot, and some would say lucky, shooting to get there, making superstars out of average players seems to be what this year's edition of the Bruins does best.

Nothing seems to come easy for UCLA these days, but at least we will get Anthony Stover back after the foot injury he sustained against Penn that kept him out of the second half. De'End Parker is still out with tendinitis.

The pregame show has also indicated that Travis Wear will not play tonight with an infection in his foot.

Tipoff is 7:30 PST and will be on Fox Sports West.

Every single player on our bench is injured.

De’end Parker, Lamb, Powell, Travis, I’m not 100% on Stover either.

Good for Lane at least

With all those injuries he may be able to get at least 2 minutes of playing time.

But is there anybody there is see him?

Yes

He is wearing UCLA color: blue jacket, light blue shirt and a gold tie.

Come on Bruins! Let’s D up and play hard

Zeek doing a lot of gambling

Good thing EWU doesn’t know what a shot clock is.

by Tydides on Dec 14, 2011 7:35 PM PST reply actions

Gonna be a quick game

If EWU takes the air out of the ball like this.

by Tydides on Dec 14, 2011 7:36 PM PST reply actions

can't understand what E Wash is doing on offense?

weird stuff – delay – spread, but not much movement

by mplsbruin on Dec 14, 2011 7:39 PM PST reply actions

Looks kind of familiar

It’s CBH’s offense without an elite PG.

This maybe one of the worst games I've ever seen in my life

Beating a couple jv girls games and awful pickup games barely right now

Do they stall more and try not to lose by 20?

I got it!

E Wash is playing this way because they think the game hasn’t really started yet since there’s only 20 or 30 folks in the arena.

by mplsbruin on Dec 14, 2011 7:50 PM PST reply actions

there's Lamb jumping in the air again

he just isn’t showing any discipline on D

Yep

I think he is our worst guard defender. And I don’t get it. He looked good on D last year in limited minutes.

Refs don't give Smith anything because they know he is out of shape.

And they know he uses his size instead of his feet.

When Zeek was shooting poorly, Jerime made up for it

Now Zeek is doing alright but Jerime is shooting poorly

Why can’t we just have 2 guards that can shoot decent?

Hey Joel

That “You’re only down by 10” thing is only encouraging if you have more than 16 points.

NNL

I’m not so much “anti-Wear” as I hate seeing them play the 3 spot. David Wear just cannot cover small forwards, and I think both of them in the game really confuses the offense.

That and I believe big men should grab boards. The Wears do not hustle to get rebounds like Lane.

Michael C

www.onviolence.com

by Michael_C on Dec 14, 2011 8:17 PM PST up reply actions

Lane seems slower than the Wears - he may be a more solid rebounder

Guess I’d say the Wears are better – but not by a lot so far

Tend to agree

Problem is niether looks good.

by DCBruins on Dec 14, 2011 8:24 PM PST up reply actions

Just looked at the box score

The shooting percentages for EW are horrible. Is it us or is it them?

(Doesn’t Eastern Washington realize that they’re asking to be called EWWWWW.)

by Fox 71 on Dec 14, 2011 8:16 PM PST reply actions

They can't dribble, and they can't pass

They’re not particularly quick, and they want to play a kill the clock style. This is not a winning strategy.

by Tydides on Dec 14, 2011 8:18 PM PST up reply actions

Hey!

Mitchell Butler, I know him and he is a great person and a true Bruin. Usually those 2 go together.

by uclakid123 on Dec 14, 2011 8:17 PM PST reply actions

Stat of the half

UCLA has two players with more than one rebound. No peeking, any guesses?
. . .

Zeek with 4 and Powell with 3. Are you kidding me? Can anyone rebound?

by DCBruins on Dec 14, 2011 8:19 PM PST reply actions

lol, preseason dominant front court

Actual season, Zeek is our leader in every stat.

by DCBruins on Dec 14, 2011 8:21 PM PST up reply actions

The last few years have been so frustrating.

Especially when you consider how things used to be.

Been a Bruin since birth

by LongtimeBru on Dec 14, 2011 8:23 PM PST up reply actions

That dominant front court disintegrated in ways TWWL couldn't predict

J Smith we all assumed would come back quicker, lighter and smarter. Wrong, wrong, wrong.
Reeves we all assumed would come back with an outside shot and more maturity. Right, Wrong (plus he forgot how to make a lay up)
Wears we all assumed could play back to the back basketball. Wrong.

So no dominant front court. Its no one’s fault (except for CBH)

Rebounding is deceptive in this game

They’re shooting so poorly and awkwardly, that most of the rebounds are long and unexpected. Hence, the rebounds are more hustle rebounds. Their small, fast guards are out hustling us. The most disappointing Bruin so far with this is Lamb.

I'd buy that if we were boxing them out

And the ball is going outside of their range. But we’re not.

I always loved Reeves

not too much to comment on, but some good stuff

.. Norman building more confidence, J in transition, hitting his FTs
.. Stover big game, blocks and rebounds
.. Zeke’s shot is back
But otoh:
.. Wear slow, no rebounds, no defense
.. Josh, still sub-par
.. Jerime, where’s his shot?
.. Lamb, just still not entirely satisfying perf (I want more of Norman)
