UCLA vs. Eastern Washington Eagles Game Thread
Eastern Washington Eagles at UCLA Bruins, Dec 14, 2011 7:30 PM PST
The Bruins return to the "friendly" confines of the LA Sports Arena to take on Eastern Washington. The "Road Show" as it has been called has been a disaster in this particular venue with a 1-3 record, the lone win coming against lowly Pepperdine. It goes without saying that win #2 had better be forthcoming tonight. As we noted in our preview, the Eagles are a marginally better team than Penn. While UCLA appeared to have the clear upper hand throughout in our last game in the Honda Center, Penn was able to keep it close at the end and pull to within two possessions. Even if Penn rode some hot, and some would say lucky, shooting to get there, making superstars out of average players seems to be what this year's edition of the Bruins does best.
Nothing seems to come easy for UCLA these days, but at least we will get Anthony Stover back after the foot injury he sustained against Penn that kept him out of the second half. De'End Parker is still out with tendinitis.
The pregame show has also indicated that Travis Wear will not play tonight with an infection in his foot.
Tipoff is 7:30 PST and will be on Fox Sports West.

Every single player on our bench is injured.
De’end Parker, Lamb, Powell, Travis, I’m not 100% on Stover either.
Good for Lane at least
With all those injuries he may be able to get at least 2 minutes of playing time.

CJM is at the game.
But is there anybody there is see him?
Yes
He is wearing UCLA color: blue jacket, light blue shirt and a gold tie.
Just heard Howland is 9-1 against E Wash - from his days at NAU.
Glad it wasn’t undefeated!
Go Bruins – Make us proud!
Bruins
Come on Bruins! Let’s D up and play hard
EWU is having a lot of trouble dribbling the ball

can't understand what E Wash is doing on offense?
weird stuff – delay – spread, but not much movement
This maybe one of the worst games I've ever seen in my life
Beating a couple jv girls games and awful pickup games barely right now
I'm not sure if this has anything to do with his conditioning
but I’ve noticed that JS is always the sweatiest guy on the floor the fastest.

GUESS
They have no bench and want to keep their starters in the game
Quite possible
since they have a guy that fouls out a lot.
I think Zeke might be back

why isn't the EWU coach letting them run??

I wish more season ticket holders knew about the ticket exchange
I mean if you aren’t going to the game, why not sell your tickets?
Michael C

I got it!
E Wash is playing this way because they think the game hasn’t really started yet since there’s only 20 or 30 folks in the arena.
E Wash is waiting for the power to go out
Michael C

Lane is just a little too weak
Needs to go strong on that
Anyone have a justin.tv link?
I’m out of town and would love to watch us implode ;)

Powell made two errors on that
will he get the hook?
For some strange reason their coach isn't letting them
play the way they know how and the way they play best and they look baaaad. They’re pathetic

Didn't understand the foul call on Smith
He was getting his arm held IMO
Refs don't give Smith anything because they know he is out of shape.
And they know he uses his size instead of his feet.
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
Can they run some more alley oops or something
to make this watchable
All these commentators are talking about is how EWU is playing unusually slow
by TheFountainAndTheMountain on Dec 14, 2011 8:02 PM PST reply actions
Ugh
We can’t get a d rebound when there is no one around
OMG
the ball bounced, a rebound should not bounce. C’mon Lane
EWU is shooting like they are tired. Everything is hitting the front of the rim.
Been a Bruin since birth
When Zeek was shooting poorly, Jerime made up for it
Now Zeek is doing alright but Jerime is shooting poorly
Why can’t we just have 2 guards that can shoot decent?
Why Jerime
pass up an open 3 and then shoot a long 2
What do you mean?
Oh right, the basketball. This could be the ugliest game I’ve ever seen.
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
28-18 at halftime
Zeek played good. Did anyone else? This team does not look very good.
Powell shows bursts of athleticism
But makes silly mistakes at the end. Of course, I think that could be said about every Bruin on the floor.
Michael C

Zeke needs to start play with more than 7 seconds left
I’ve seen this repeatedly.

NNL
I’m not so much “anti-Wear” as I hate seeing them play the 3 spot. David Wear just cannot cover small forwards, and I think both of them in the game really confuses the offense.
That and I believe big men should grab boards. The Wears do not hustle to get rebounds like Lane.
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
Yeah I don't like any of them on offense.
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
The stream I am on is speeding up and slowing down, so no.
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
Well the hilarity of Mr. All Caps talking about Lane
When DWear committed the bad hands play of the game is not lost on me.
All I know is I have seen D Wear miss two lay ups (maybe three)
I don’t understand how elite players who are 6’10 can miss sooooo many lay ups.
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
Lane seems slower than the Wears - he may be a more solid rebounder
Guess I’d say the Wears are better – but not by a lot so far
Tend to agree
Problem is niether looks good.
Just looked at the box score
The shooting percentages for EW are horrible. Is it us or is it them?
(Doesn’t Eastern Washington realize that they’re asking to be called EWWWWW.)
They can't dribble, and they can't pass
They’re not particularly quick, and they want to play a kill the clock style. This is not a winning strategy.
Their box score should be a higher percentage.
If we could get a defensive rebound.
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
Hey!
Mitchell Butler, I know him and he is a great person and a true Bruin. Usually those 2 go together.
Stat of the half
UCLA has two players with more than one rebound. No peeking, any guesses?
. . .
…
Zeek with 4 and Powell with 3. Are you kidding me? Can anyone rebound?
Zeek and Powell are the two 6'10 twins right?
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
lol, preseason dominant front court
Actual season, Zeek is our leader in every stat.
The last few years have been so frustrating.
Especially when you consider how things used to be.
Been a Bruin since birth
That dominant front court disintegrated in ways TWWL couldn't predict
J Smith we all assumed would come back quicker, lighter and smarter. Wrong, wrong, wrong.
Reeves we all assumed would come back with an outside shot and more maturity. Right, Wrong (plus he forgot how to make a lay up)
Wears we all assumed could play back to the back basketball. Wrong.
So no dominant front court. Its no one’s fault (except for CBH)
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
At least the Lakers are still the best pro team in Los Angeles
(sarcasm)
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
Rebounding is deceptive in this game
They’re shooting so poorly and awkwardly, that most of the rebounds are long and unexpected. Hence, the rebounds are more hustle rebounds. Their small, fast guards are out hustling us. The most disappointing Bruin so far with this is Lamb.
Louisville, KY for UCLA class of '87
I'd buy that if we were boxing them out
And the ball is going outside of their range. But we’re not.
We have 8 turnovers, is that as many field goals as EWU has?
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
Now you see why Wear is better
He is not good but Lane can’t play D
Good board though
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
Hey any rebound is a good rebound with this team.
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
That was a dumb pass on the fast break
Because we never had numbers and should have pulled the ball out.
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
Okay I feel for CBH
before the season started we were too deep on bigs. Now we are out of them if Wear can’t come back. Lane is the only 4 left.
Just got home from Bishop Gorman vs. Desert Oasis (aka Shabazz dunk fest)
Now I see why UCLA is on his list, his Gorman coaches don’t teach defense
Not saying he can't play D
just that his team doesn’t attempt it. They play almost a Loyola Marymount (back in the day) style
Zeek did not start the year off well
But he has been incredibly efficient in getting his points as well as coming back to the boards
11-1 beating us on offensive rebounds
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
Yeah I like Stover
I am sure that will jinx him
just about the only guy
displaying any energy. The rest look very content playing a casual game of pickup ball.
Powell had an almost really dumb swing of the arm
At least stover has a presence on D
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
LJ is the only one even trying to drive the lane
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
I always loved Reeves
but he was overrated for his “offense”. He never created offense, he was just excellent coming off screens or putting back rebounds. Of course, when he was up, he had ten times more hustle than any other bruin. When he was up for it being the key words.
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
HAHAHA
Anyone else hear him say this crowd is becoming a factor?
How many thought this would be said after the first couple games
We need Jones for our offense
We don't have a backup for him
He is the only 4 left
what/??? we're only up 8 ???? how did that happen
i thought they’d be down by 50 by now

Wear for 3!
Both of them have such flat shots though
At least it was a 3
I hate it more when he is two steps closer for the long 2.
Nope the worst is when they are standing on the line
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
Nah
At least that may be an error. When you set up inside the three line and shoot, that is worse.
Ah, like that?
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
Okay
Can we combine Stover and Josh so Josh only plays offense and stover only plays defense?
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
we started off that way to begin last year
and it actually seemed to work somewhat. I recall the two constantly switching out. Maybe we should go back to that.
Are you kidding me D wear?
we just said not to shoot that
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
did he bounce that ball off his balls?
by TheFountainAndTheMountain on Dec 14, 2011 8:58 PM PST reply actions
I think Jerime just realized he could drive and he doesn't just have to chuck up bad 3s
Michael C
www.onviolence.com
Cuz they were gonna lose him anyway
at the end of this season. At least they got something for him by trading him.
Really this is beyond bad
Jones has played well. Stover has played well. After that, what? Smith has made some plays. Wear has shown some toughness. Feel for you on post game Tydides.
I'm going to start a policy
Wherein I put as much effort into the postgame as the team puts into the game.
Well the rest of this game is going to be just terrible.
Both teams in the bonus and I’m going to bet we let EWU back into the game with poor shooting and defense. UGH
I'd like to get a good nickname for Stoves
Feel like he could have a great one but I’m not all that creative
The Stove
bc then you could say he’s heating up

Trust UCLA to make it a game
you could put them up against The Sisters of the Blind University and they’ll make it interesting

I have this dream where
Howland remembers what made his final four teams great and Stover and Powell are the only two members of this squad that see the floor next year
Richmon should be tough
and then AT Stanford and AT Cal woah that’s a tough tough start
by TheFountainAndTheMountain on Dec 14, 2011 9:10 PM PST reply actions
Before the year
I thought we would lose to Richmond because of a small crowd. Now I think I am wrong on the crowd. There may not be a crowd. May be an empty gym.
I miss the drama of LMR free throws
The ovations after making both were the loudest cheers of the game
by themichael21 on Dec 14, 2011 9:16 PM PST up reply actions
It makes sense that EWU is struggling from 3 because
opponents were shooting 52 % from 3 against UCLA and that’s just statistically unreal so reduction to the mean
by TheFountainAndTheMountain on Dec 14, 2011 9:14 PM PST reply actions
I kinda like Travis
if he stays inside. Don’t get me wrong, don’t think is Reeves but he is okay.
DWear throws it away
gotta make it interesting for TV right David

I think Jerime is trying to do too much
He is better when he let’s the gmae come to him
So lower level center court tix for the Richmond game
are posted on Stubhub for $170. ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY DOLLARS. I know I only study biz/econ for a year but still something seems off about this price in a supply and demand sense.
it set them back like 20 pts
idiotic strategy
by TheFountainAndTheMountain on Dec 14, 2011 9:25 PM PST up reply actions
When Smith isn't on the floor
this team just seems to compete so much harder. Not a good thing for a player who was supposed to be the team’s best.
mora there to recruit big josh?

did you guys see the way that dude just shot FTs ???
by TheFountainAndTheMountain on Dec 14, 2011 9:28 PM PST reply actions
I lost the feed
Usually that upsets me, now I am almost thankful
not too much to comment on, but some good stuff
.. Norman building more confidence, J in transition, hitting his FTs
.. Stover big game, blocks and rebounds
.. Zeke’s shot is back
But otoh:
.. Wear slow, no rebounds, no defense
.. Josh, still sub-par
.. Jerime, where’s his shot?
.. Lamb, just still not entirely satisfying perf (I want more of Norman)
