Dan missed on Leach
I don’t mean to look back, because we have our coach and it's done, but I just listened to Leach talk on Dan Patrick. Dan flat out missed on Leach. He is so impressive and has that brio and bravado. No bullshit, get it done, “my coaches are out recruiting and I’m in the hotel looking at recruiting film as it comes in and out.” 8 top 10 offensive finishes in his years at Texas Tech from ‘00-’09. Mike Leach knows how to run a division 1 football team.
Dan is so conscientious and overzealous about improprieties and looking after the overly idealistic, mysterious UCLA Morgan center closed door scrupulous NCAA image, that he missed on this diamond in the rough pirate. The James thing was a non-issue. How do you hire Neuheisel with his past and then pass on Leach. Both have been implicated by the NCAA with violations, possible violations, and Leach has been vindicated. Big miss by Dan considering who he missed, passed up on, and now the unexperienced college coaching hire in Mora. Rick was on ice in the same way, having not coached in years.
And he hired a guy who clearly won’t know what he’s doing as college coach for months, as he’s never coached college football. I could understand the NFL to college risk if he hired a guy like Josh McDaniels or other promising NFL coordinator with no college experience, because THEY HAVE PROMISE! But he hired someone who’s been out of game for years, was mediocre while in the game, and never coached college.
Leach already knows what to do, I can tell. He’s talking in specifics and Mora was talking in these latitudes Monday. And, if I have the money like Mora does and the direction, I could hire Klemm, Mazzone, etc. I will be irritated until we see final product on field. 12 MILLION DOLLARS to someone unproven. Some bold risk that was.
And for those who might read this and think it's detrimental to the program, well sorry, I’m upset. We need a revolution with that athletic department of ours.

Too Little Too Late
We already know that Dan’s a moron and didn’t have a plan. Leach would have been awesome, but Dan’s never heard of him (his only criteria).
All we can do now is hope Mora & his new set of coordinators will be enough to turn the tide.
highest rate in the nation he said
while at TTU. I thought for sure when there was 20 million to work with that we’d come away with someone great. When Leach was passed on and went to WSU, I thought this means Guerrero has a big fish. “Get ready, people. We’re going to get our guy now. Just watch. No way UCLA falls by the wayside.” No. Way.
Mora contacted UCLA, among other schools. This is the guy Dan settled on. We should have chosen our guy. Dan should have taken the Brinks down to Texas or Mississippi and closed Mullen or Briles; or been able to see the potential with Leach. I may subscribe to Fox Sports Northwest next fall just to see what he puts on the field. I know I’m late with these revelations, but still fuming.
I'd suggest get over it...
I had no problem Dan targeting Petersen over Leach, but that doesnt mean that you dont have simulatenous conversations. He could have even been honest with Leach and said it’s between you and one other guy and we will have an answer for you one way ot the other in a week. I’m sure LEach could have held off WSU for that time period.
But DG is clearly limited in his abilities to handle this type of coaching search, one outside of UCLA ties. You could even argue Mora was easy for him because Donohue was in his ear telling him how great he was.
But it is over, Leach is in Pullman and we got Mora. My gut tells me Leach is there for 2-3 years, will drag the Cougars to a .500 team and then bolt for a more named program. I’m not being critical of Leach (dont want the wrath of 66). If he can turn WSU into a servicable team in a couple of years, he deserves to take that accomplishment elsewhere.

Yeah, it's history all right
It is also Exhibit A in the case of UCLA Students, Alumni and Fans v. Guerrerror. We can’t forget all this history. We need to have it front and center every day to throw in Chianti Dan’s face. The grown ups in Murphy Hall need to realize that we children are not just throwing a temper tantrum that will go away with time. We’re being actively mistreated by someone who is supposed to be looking out for our interest.
We need to shove this admittedly ancient history down the administrations throat. The facts speak for themselves about the guy we hired. Any one of us here, and I’ll repeat that – any one of us hard core BN denizens could have made the speeches and hired the guys and done the other stuff that our new head coach has done. Any of us. That’s not coaching. That’s just making speeches and using a whole bunch of money that’s not mine to hire competent people. What he has done does not change the fact that his head coaching record has exactly one winning season, is exactly four seasons long, and includes zero contact with the college game in 27 years. That is a bad hire. The person responsible for that needs to be reminded daily, as does that person’s boss.
It also does not matter if the new coach leads us to an undefeated season next year. It was still a bad decision. Trading the cow for six magic beans was a bad decision, even if those beans turned out to result in a giant beanstalk.
+1
Cautious Optimism. Show Dan the Door.
Dump Dan!

3 strikes
Guerrero should be accountable like Neuheisel was. I respect Neuheisel for saying if it didn’t work this season, then he deserved to be fired. Guerrero should be backing this huge hire by putting his job on the line. I want to hear him say he’ll step down if this gamble and hire doesn’t work.
He missed on Peterson twice now, got past preliminaries, took away the initiative of courting a more possible, better candidate, and failed because he was already under contract. What a cumbersome PR disaster. Is anyone watching? What if this happened at Stanford? Would the president there allow this type of embarrassing mishandling of their football program? No, they take it seriously. Look at em. Great academics, well managed athletic department, no blunders like this. That’s prestige.
Mora = Move On For Now...
Look, don’t get me wrong. I do not approve of Dan’s handling of the coaching search, fund raising, Pauley Pavilion renovation nor our football practice facilities. (cmon Dan 80 yards of practice turf…really! High schools have more than that).
But with that said we have to move on. Let’s get behind Mora and support and hope that Chancellor Block makes the right decision. Leach may have been a good catch, but if he was that THAT good, he would not be going to WSU… Think about that…
Forget the past time to move on.
Spilt milk, water under the bridge, living in the past, time to move on. It is what it is. This is wasted intellectual discussion.
I guess you're right
When Neuheisel was hired, I moved on and got behind him…proudly defending him and spinning it as if he’d win Pac-12 championships, when I really knew he was a bargain, nepotistic, easy, unimaginative nexus hire. I guess this is part of being a Bruin football fan, huh? Accept the unimaginative, spoonfed, mediocre nexus-by-Donahue hire when your incompetent AD gives it to you? After all, it’s too late now? We better fall in line? It is the best thing for the program at this point.
Yes sir. This gruel is double-plus good. Now back to the Ministry of Truth channel for some more good education
Oh yeah. One more thing. Please sir, can I have another. (Wham.)
