BN Gameday: Oregon Second Half Thread
We just one more half left in the Rick Neuheisel era in Westwood. After the first half UCLA is down by a score of 17-35 (box score). We had some "moments" for sure in the first half. It was fun when Patrick Larimore had a pick 6 with a spectacular drive into the end zone.Tresey's defense actually showed some signs of life early on with couple of takeaways. Then a flea-flicker from Kevin Prince to Nelson Rosario gave us a little hope.
However, Oregon is too fast, too skilled and way too polished of a team. Despite closing within 14-21 the Bruins appeared to be done in early with our typical bumbling, stumbling atrocious performance on both sides of the field especially on the road Really at this point there is nothing that needs to be discussed and highlighted about this game. It is serving as a reminder for why we have been calling for a wholesale regime change the entire season.
"Let's have a real good time." Have at in our second half thread.
GO BRUINS.

I know we have no chance of a W
But I’m actually enjoying this. This is the best I’ve seen this team all year by far even though we are down by 18 or whatever. This team is playing their hearts out

Ogden, McNeil, Carney, E-Rock, John Barnes
This has been a fun game so far!
The UCLA D, save giving up a few explosion plays, has had a strong showing
Two key stats
3 turnovers by us.
3 4th down conversions by them.
If these numbers were different, we might be giving them a real scare right now.
We're so close!
to turning the corner and closing that gap!
Your point is valid though.

If I were Petersen
Mak ’d out pad in Palisades, commute Sunset to the “wood” in my alumni paid for 7 series.
We have played with heart,
but we are getting killed on 4th downs. We are just not ready or out of position on almost all the key plays. And the Pistol is pitiful, especially when we use it for short yardage up the middle as we have done ad nauseam the past two years.
And one dumb ass question. Why oh why do we throw to Fauria so rarely?
But, as usual, the talent is there … Except at quarterback. If only KP was as talented as he is gritty.

No pressure, just go out there and wing it.
If only our defense was halfway competent. One can dream.

we're not even losing by more than the spread
the nation thinks we’ll lose by more than this.
No kidding. Oregon is only two unanswered TDs away from covering.
They could pull that off in 30 seconds.

Nah, but it is a reflection
of how absolutely terrible our defense is. I can’t think of a worse UCLA defense – and our late 90s defenses were at times pretty terrible.
Yes and No
No, because we are within some kind of striking distance of a top 10 team with far more talent.
Yes, because UCLA should be a far more competitive team and we should be a top 10 team, not feeling lucky that we aren’t being embarrassed by one.
It's what the defenses on other teams do..
Go Bruins!
Most were thinking it would be just Oregon by itself

Watching that loss to Notre Dame that year was horrific

Actually I meant it literally
Because 4th down = punt is such a habit for most coaches… You just figure that’s the thing to do
In my world
That train is serving microbrew.
by DrJay32 on Dec 2, 2011 7:49 PM PST via mobile reply actions
Why in the hell would you not play for 4 downs
and not plan to punt?
You want to burn the damn boats? Tell your team you are not punting again. Score or GTFO.
think they figured out
they have to run outside and not up the middle
Doesn't matter if you punt or lose the ball on downs..
the way our defense is playing…
Go Bruins!
That was a nice tackle

Go Bruins!
Poor guys are tired
Maybe Fox will stop the game for a while so they can rest up.
U r kidding me? If they tackle, they getboffnthe field.
This is why everything needs to be an onside kick
There will be no stops
Those early turnovers were bait
to play them thinking there’s a point to playing defense.
It's just like the Civil War in 2008
Where OSU would have gone to Rose Bowl with win… but Oregon scored a TD on virtually every drive, and we lost 65-38 :(
I was shouting for onside kicks for the whole 2nd half

We’re going hard after Sumlin
Sumlin is a great choice as long as he bring Keenum with him.
Oh, that can’t happen. Crickets. . . .
According to a source
Do coaches usually make an statement that they’ve turned down a job, or is this is official as it gets?
Great question.
Gold is fairly reliable, though. Says it’s a source “close to the situation.”
Yeah, I don't mean to impugn Gold
But everything I’ve seen about this story is from a “source not authorized to speak”
Agreed. I hope it's not true.
He’s posting it from the game though, where he’s probably sitting in a suite or somewhere close to people who really are “close to the situation.”
Strong rumor this afternoon that ASU took Sumlin off its short list because TAMU has offered their HC job to

Gold's reporting is a little off
UCLA may be “targeting” Sumlin but the only persona around UCLA circles who want Sumlin is none other than Chianti Dan. Chianti Dan loves Sumlin. Bruin boosters are not crazy about Sumlin.
It's unclear
From what I have heard Chianti Dan is starting piss off a lot of high profile boosters.
Manny Diaz
If the last two games have showed us anything, we need a tough, defensive minded coach. We play soft.
Trouble is
DG is doing the hiring…not the boosters
And another stop...

We don't call Leach, put our eggs in Petersen's basket and strike out
Quick fall to second or third tier.
What a terrible, terrible, mess.
Is there anyone who could possibly say that Sumlin would be better than Leach?
sjh
I don't know coaches that well
My main problem is that he’s floundering for a coach at this point. Really? DG wasn’t talking to people weeks ago? It looks terrible.
That's what happens
When we hire someone with no credible experience as CEO.
Let’s look at the Trojan AD. A Heisman Winner, Rhodes Scholar, Attorney at a power firm, Broadaster, venture captalist.
Our dude – some baseball player who went to some Cal State program and was an AD at UCI. It’s effing embarrassing. I doubt Chianti Dan even watches or understands college football.
He could be a good AD if all he'd ever been was an AD
The problem is, I doubt he was ever a good AD. Typical UCLA reward-the-status-quo hire.
maybe, I could see him become Michael Bush.

Offensive Suggestions
What kind of offense does UCLA need in the future? I say go back to the old west coast quick pass offense under center. No more shotgun every play. What do you guys think?
Honestly!
If we’re not going to get a Tier 1 guy like Urban or Petersen, why get a retread from the second tier?
I’ll take “unproven” guys like Harbaugh, Kelly, Whittingham over second chancers like Walt Harris, RN, and Erickson. Ummm… which group has had more success????
Chip Kelly was offensive coordinator at New Hampshire before coming to Oregon?
Is that a FCS school?
Go Bruins!
Bellotti hired him...
…we need to hire someone who is creative and ahead of the curve like Kelly.
Someone who knows about Game Theory and Statistical Probabilities.
As you see how DG has screwed the search
you can understand how he screwed rn and the entire program.
A new coach is not enough. We need a clean sweep.
sjh
It's night and day
between our execution and scheming vs Oregon. If anything, today proved that we have the athletes to match the top team in the conference, but they’re not worth anything when they are out of positoin and arm tackling or running out of poor schemes
Yup. We have talent.
The culture needs to change – its as if getting to UCLA is enough. We need these guys to develop.

7 of those points were from our D
and our offense turned it over several times. D made enough stops to win today if we were playing our best offense.
that's not much above their average.
and would have been lower if our offense hadn’t given them an extra 3 possessions.
