Bruins Get Commit From 4-Star CB Ishmael Adams
Call me a Bruin.
U.C.L.A. and Coach Jim Mora scored a major coup today with the verbal commitment of Ishamel Adams, a 4-star cornerback from football power Oaks Christian. He is ranked by Scout.com as the #10 cornerback in the country.
This huge pickup was first tweeted by Brandon Huffman:

Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian four-star cornerback Ishmael Adams has committed to UCLA... (@IshmaelLAdams)
It has also been confirmed by the LA Times, and HT to themichael21 for fanposting it, too.
Here are some video highlights of our newest Bruin (note he also plays RB for Oaks Christian).

Check out the beautiful example at 1:20 in the video of what this kid can do in press coverage. I would love to see a lot of that in the upcoming years.
This is a huge get for several reasons...
First, this kid was considered a very solid commit to Cal before he announced his decision today.
from Greg Biggins via twitter:
@GregBiggins
Greg Biggins
Ishmael Adams to #UCLA is one of the biggest recruiting surprises of the year, he has been close to a #Cal lock since the summer
This commitment shows the recruiting prowess of new DB coach and recruiting ace Demetrice Martin. For Coach Martin and Coach Mora to swing a solid from a rival school in the midst of the chaos that has surrounded our football program of late shows that our coaching staff is making a great pitch and is presenting a good vision for the future.
This last point is reinforced by the very interesting comments from Adams' on why he finally chose U.C.L.A. Again from Biggins via twitter:
@GregBiggins
Greg Biggins
"I wanted to commit now, instead of Army game, to try and influence other players to come and help change the program with me," IshAdams
This sounds like the kind of leader we need to have on the field - one who is going to effect positive changes in the program and who will encourage other recruits to make those changes with him. I really like what this says about this young man's character, and makes me think of a young Brian Price, who passed on other options to take the tougher path. This is a young man who is not afraid of a challenge but embraces it.
An additional key to this recruit is Mora's continued recognition of the need to defense the spread and other high powered offenses in the Pac-12, where a good secondary is an absolute must. Coupled with Mora's first commit, cornerback Marcus Rios, we have an outstanding pair of CB's headed to Westwood, and this will help shore up a position that was problematic for the Bruin defense last season. Now, hopefully Coach Mora and Coach Martin will let these guys play tough physical press coverage at the line, so we won't have to watch opposing receivers running around all by themselves for the first 10 yards from the line of scrimmage. With Andrew Abbott, Aaron Hester, and Sheldon Price returning next season, the cornerback position just got a whole lot better looking for the Bruins.
Let's all welcome Ishamel to Westwood. Go Bruins!

Huuuuuge get!
This is definitely a position of need and as noted with Rios in the fold this will really help solidfy this position moving forward. We will also have Anthony Jefferson to plug in if he’s able to come back healthy this coming year. We’re only a couple of stud DT’s and WR’s away from filling out a really solid class. Let’s hope the momentum is sustained over the next 6 weeks or so.
Go Bruins!!!
This is great but,
the biggest issue UCLA has had over the past decade has been our trenches. You can see the immediate impact of our Linemen on the program with a single person. Brian Price, eventually anybody can get open if they have the time to do so. I just don’t understand why we have never seen any urgency to fill up those positions with quality, D-1 ready recruits. and as I said before, any QB can throw if given enough time to do so…
I think your concern is legit but
I also think Mora and his staff is well aware of it. This is a huge get though and should give us even more momentum heading into crunchtime. I am hoping this kind of mo will get us some more good athletes including ones who can contribute to our def frontline.

Also getting a legit D-LINE coach
Not saying anything bad about Breckterfield, but what we saw this year from our D-Line was pathetic. Price was a special talent that made our whole defense pretty good his jr. year. I also remember last year David Carter saying that he hired someone to teach him technique moves in preperation for the draft (although that was with Todd Howard)
Westlake/Oaks pipeline
First Hunt (Westlake HS) and now Adams (Oaks is 1/2 mile from Westlake HS) from the Westlake area is a very good sign! Both schools are talent-rich fertile recruiting grounds. I’ll be at Oaks the next 4 days for their basketball tournament – I’ll look for Adams to let him know how glad Bruins Nation is to have him!
You must run in such a way that you may be victorious. I Corinthians 9:24
Their football fields are about 800 feet distance from each other as the crow flies.
They are fierce rivals and just played a Southern CIF championship game against each other which Westlake won 49-41.
I believe they dress in their own locker rooms and the visiting team jogs over to the home team’s field.

Yet, oddly enough, they are in two different counties (Ventura & LA)

Bruins have the best class of DB recruits in the country
according to Scout.com. And the total class of 2012 recruits is currently tops in the Pac-12. Not a bad start.

Naysayers...
Where are all the Mora naysayers now??? We on BNation jumped all over the decision to hire Mora. So far his staff is doing the work to get off to a great recruiting start. Hopefully we can get more 4 and 5 star recruits.

Right here
Neuheisel won the living room battle as well. Needs to be seen on the field, Mora has not fared well in the X and O category.
I am pleased by his coaching hires but wins are what I want.

Did a whole year go by already?
I must have missed the whole 2012 season where we got to 9-10 wins, finally developed our talent and put them in positions to succeed schematically. Way to spike the ball on the 20 yard line, Fly.
You missed it?
It was a great one. Instead of running, running then passing. We decided to pass, run, then run. This new concept paid off in an Orange Bowl berth. Bummed you missed it.

People like this
Are the reason why Morgan Center gets away with this stupid coaching carousel every 4-5 years. Maybe “Fly” refers to an animal with a comparable attention span, cause it seems like all it takes to placate a certain, and unfortunately sizeable, segment of our fanbase is to dangle a new shiny object in front of their faces and they just fall in line and lap it all up.
No need to get caustic...
I simply stated that he is doing the right things now in the fall/winter to prepare himself for a good season. I don’t like the job DG has done either but we have to start somewhere. Geez… let’s be happy we have 4/5 star recruits on our radar. For the last 4 years they were scarce for our team.
by FlyBruin on Dec 27, 2011 4:30 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
Aw, Fly, I was willing to give you a break
4/5 star recruits were scarce the last 4 years? No, not really. Please go back and look at Rick first 3 classes. Then you’ll see why we aren’t ready to put Mora in the Hall of Fame just yet.

Name me just one 5 star recruit we landed under CRN?
by FlyBruin on Dec 27, 2011 5:02 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
Brett Hundley, XSF
Hitting Neuheisel for recruiting is the most ignorant take one can have. Recruiting was never the issue with Neuheisel. It was coaching them up. Let’s hope Mora and his staff dont have the same problems.
by Nestor on Dec 27, 2011 5:35 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
I was not including Hundley because he has not played a down yet. Although I do look forward to seeing him under center next year. That was not an ignorant comment by the way.
Think about it, if we had not received verbals commitments from anyone under CJM you guys would be carving him a new orifice. At least for the short term give the guy credit for pulling a couple standout recruits. Geez…
by FlyBruin on Dec 27, 2011 1:47 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
"We haven't pulled in any 5 stars under CRN"
If you don’t count the 5*s he pulled in. It’s ignorant, and your little strawman attack about what we “would have” done is the last piece of BS I’m willing to put up with from you. Cut your losses, because not only are you wrong, but you’re on the verge of getting banned.
Come on. Read my post above

Credit. Go back and read the posts on Mora hiring great recruiters in his staff. Credit. Read our piece on getting a commit from Rios. Credit. Geez. We are absolutely giving Mora a fair shot. We may not have supported the hiring process that got him (and that’s Guerrerror’s fail), but I will support Mora until he gives me reason not to.

Add
I was wrong about XSF. He was just a 4 star recruit just like Ishmael Adams. Neuheisel brought int whole bunch of 4 starts. Besides Hundley here were the other 5 starts signed by Neuheisel:
Owamagbe Odighizuwa (2010)
Malcolm Jones (2010)
Morrell Presley (2009)
Rahim Moore (2008)
Moore arguably was originally recruited by Dorrell/Walker but Neuheisel also helped to close the deal when he came in.
The bottom line here it is absolutely absurd to even hint at Neuheisel not getting it done on the recruiting trail. In terms of recruiting he was one of the best in college football until on field performance caught up with him.
Mora is off to a good start and I am glad he is holding his own on the recruiting front. However, that hasn’t been the issue in Westwood as archived in detail over the years in Westwood. The issue is coaching and fundamentals. We hope Mora gets it done on the field.
Well, except for those 5 star guys
Just show me a single 5 star guy from Neuheisel!

Actually had you said this in the beginning
We wouldn’t have this problem, but you coming in and calling out so-called “naysayers” is, as I said before, spiking the ball way before you get in the endzone. If anyone is responsible for the response you got, it’s you. We’re all aware of what you just said, and it’s not anything new. What is new is people (you) declaring victory before a full staff is even in place, before a single practice has been held, and before a single down has been played. Anyone itching to crown Mora as the savior is going to have to wait a LONG time on BN, because that’s not going to happen until he shows results on the field. Everything else is a prerequisite.
this is America...
Let’s not crucify someone for their opinion. I just simply said that im glad CJM got off to a good recruiting start. I’m pleasantly surprised as I was not expecting an immediate impact on recruiting. I never said that CJM was a great or even good coach. Ease up and enjoy the fact we are getting some positive news out of our football program for our future. If you can’t enjoy the present you’ll never have joy…

You started it out confrontationally, it's your fault
Don’t walk it back and play the victim, then proceed to lecture me after you get called out on it. You’re not going to last long if you keep it up.
without recruits you dont win...
SUC shows us that. Their coaching sucks but they have athletes at every position. Normally all things being equal coaching wins. However in our case we have not had either. We have talent, just not enough. We have to stockpile talent.
The reason I know this is because I relocated to SEC country after graduating UCLA and that is their formula in the south. Stockpile talent and have enough big uglies to win in the trenches.
by FlyBruin on Dec 27, 2011 1:52 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
Without scoring more points than your oppponent, you don't win
I can make statements that have nothing to do with the topic at hand here as well.
Rick brought in plenty of talent. Certainly more than enough to be disappointed with the on field results. He brought in better and more balanced classes than this one. The talent excuse is a non-starter. Rick recruited very well. That is not up for debate, because the rankings and the offers from other schools that our recruits got are all the evidence needed to show that you’re full of it.
You know what's interesting and funny
arguably the top two defensive players in the nation, clairborne and the honey badger, weren’t high-rated guys out of high school and weren’t recruited by many major programs. Clairborne was a WR ranked in the 80s while Mathieu’s other offers were from LA Tech, and Southern Miss.
The point is, you don’t need to recruit straight 4 and 5 star guys to compete and shouldn’t stockpile high rated guys but should find players that fit your system.

Unless we have a developed Brett H i’m not sure 2012 can produce 11 wins. The QB spot is the key. We have not had good qb play since McNown. I’m not 100% convinced Huntley received the right development under CRN. We will see. I think a good attainable goal next year is 8-9 wins.
by FlyBruin on Dec 27, 2011 4:59 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
`
I haven’t decided what I think is reasonable, expected, attainable or unrealistic yet. I will make those predictions on the eve of the 2012 season. What I can tell you right now is that if CJM wins 11 games next year you won’t hear anything more from me about him being a bad hire. Although no amount of wins would make me think Dan should stay, as his screw-ups go far beyond the Mora hire.
These recruits are good, and I hope to see more, but CRN showed you can get top 25 recruiting classes every year and still be a mediocre to bad football team. Lets see what happens on the field.
That was quick
I’m guessing you’re lighting a cigarette right about now before your shower…
But hey, what do I know. Iām just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
Being somewhat close to this situation
Im now really interested in Jordan Paytons decision.
A bruin is good forever, a Trojan is only good... ahh eff it, just use tin foil

Classy kid, welcome aboard Adams!
Greg Biggins of ESPN:
“I just committed to UCLA,” Adams said. “I prayed about this decision really hard and made a pros and cons list for both schools. When I weighed everything against each other, UCLA came out on top. Academically, I like what UCLA offers, the proximity to home was important and the biggest thing was being able to be a part of changing a program around versus just being a part of a program.”
Kinda sounds like Rahim...
the kinds of things he saying remind me of Rahim. Wasn’t Rahim the one trying to recruit others to join in to change the program? Is this a DB thing?
It's a leader thing
Ishmael sounds like a true leader and a guy we’ll come to embrace over the years, like Rahim, ATV, MJD, Cade McNown, etc.
