Special CFB Open Thread: Washington vs. Baylor at the Alamo Bowl

RG3 takes on Nick Holt's Husky defense tonight at the Alamo Bowl. (Photo by Sarah Glenn/Getty Images)

Let's do one more bowl special open thread before we our mega bowl bonanza thread on January 2nd. Tonight it's Washington Huskies against Baylor Bears at the Alamo Bowl. Washington is another interesting program to keep an eye on. Despite all the hype around Steve Sarkasian, I am not sure how much better he really is compared to Rick Neuheisel. Their season wasn't all that different from the one UCLA had this past year. It will be interesting to see how they hand the Bear offense led by a Heisman QB.

The game is on ESPN. The kickoff in San Antonio is scheduled for 6 pm PST. We will ride this thread until our hoops thread gets posted at 7:45 pm PST. Here is tWWL page to keep track of the box score. We will let you take it from here. Fire away in this open thread.

GO BRUINS.

I was thinking just the opposite

It’s another “White Flag.” I don’t understand the apparent necessity to abandon traditional school colors to make a statement which equates to surrender. It just strikes me as stupid. Sorry Kenneth.

by Fox 71 on Dec 29, 2011 6:17 PM PST up reply actions

Yep.

Looks just like our surrender whites versus SUC. GuessNike can suck, too.

by uclahy on Dec 29, 2011 6:28 PM PST up reply actions

Is Texas waving the white flag every time they go on the road?

It’s a silly argument. I understand some people’s argument against adding a black jersey when it isn’t a school color, but every football team has a white jersey, and it matches with everything.

If the kids like it, that matters a lot more than what a bunch of old alumni think, that’s for sure.

by Kenneth Powers on Dec 29, 2011 6:44 PM PST up reply actions

That's different, Kenneth.

All white is a traditional color. Texas doesn’t abandon its traditions to wear all white.

by Fox 71 on Dec 29, 2011 6:51 PM PST up reply actions

I prefer the Chargers road uniforms with the light blue pants. We could do that.

I don’t mind new, but I like our traditional colors. White on white is booooring.

by uclahy on Dec 29, 2011 7:05 PM PST up reply actions

They used to.

I think they break them out once in awhile. I’ll look.

by uclahy on Dec 29, 2011 7:11 PM PST up reply actions

Here's the link. My memory was a bit off. Duh.

http://www.chargers.com/team/history/uniforms.html

The early ones in 1960 used white pants on the road, then an ugly orange gold in 1964, but if they just reversed the original home in 1960 for the away, putting the powder blue on the bottom and making the top white, it would have looked cool IMO.

Powder blue is still an official color for them. Very clear UCLA influence. They started on LA in 1960 under Sid Gillman.

Someone please explain to me

How is Sarkisian any better than Neuheisel?

by Nestor on Dec 29, 2011 6:46 PM PST reply actions

I'd also ask

What would Sark’s record be if he had Kevin Craft as his starter in his first season.

by Nestor on Dec 29, 2011 6:49 PM PST up reply actions

You have a point there

But he also inherited a 0-win team from the previous season. (Then again, he also inherited Jake Locker.)

Yeah… I don’t really think Sark is all that great, but that’s all I could think of to make the case.

by Kenneth Powers on Dec 29, 2011 6:52 PM PST up reply actions

That 0 win team

It lost Locker in the second game of the season after almost beating BYU in the first game (the BYU team that whooped us 59-0). In fact Washington should have won that game but lost because of an absurd celebration penalty from the SPTR.

If Locker was healthy that season the Huskies would have most likely won 4-6 games that year. So I wouldn’t put too much stock in Sark’s cronies making the case that they made dramatic improvement in his first year.

by Nestor on Dec 29, 2011 6:55 PM PST up reply actions

Hence my qualification in parentheses.

Like I said, I don’t actually think he’s significantly better. Maybe marginally.

by Kenneth Powers on Dec 29, 2011 6:56 PM PST up reply actions

FWIW

I hope the Huskies keep him around for at least 2-3 more seasons. But I think a good number of their alums will start to see through his BS after next season.

by Nestor on Dec 29, 2011 6:57 PM PST up reply actions

QB development might be one in his favor too.

Keith Price is having a great year as a first-time starter.

But overall… ehhh.

by Kenneth Powers on Dec 29, 2011 6:59 PM PST up reply actions

Also Neu's 4-win stinker in year 3 was pretty inexcusable.

Sark’s only been around 3 years, so it’s hard to tell if/when he craters to that level. (I’m really trying to make an argument here.)

Continuing to lose in-state guys like KeiVarae Russell (ND commit today) won’t help though.

by Kenneth Powers on Dec 29, 2011 7:11 PM PST up reply actions

if you believe media reports, yeah

hard to tell what’s legit and what isn’t when it comes to coaching searches though.

by Kenneth Powers on Dec 29, 2011 7:08 PM PST up reply actions

Yes

Because some UCLA boosters have no clue about college football.

by Nestor on Dec 29, 2011 7:13 PM PST up reply actions

I agree

It seems to me that Coach Neuheisel is a better recruiter and no worse as coach. Sarkisian’s record is skewed because he had a first rate QB. Also, given the coaching tree that he fell from, he probably cheats.

by Fox 71 on Dec 29, 2011 6:55 PM PST up reply actions

Was Art Briles ever in the conversation before the Mora hire?

I think the question answers itself. Spilled milk for sure.

by uclahy on Dec 29, 2011 7:07 PM PST reply actions

No

But Briles has some ethics issues swirling around him. Google Willie Lyles and Art Briles.

by Nestor on Dec 29, 2011 7:14 PM PST up reply actions

Uh, conversation? What conversation?

There was no conversation, no plan, no process.

No Leach, no Briles, no one other than maybe Petersen — and Mora.

During this bowl season we will see many coaches who made BN lists but were simply ignored by the wine guy.

sjh

by Class of 66 on Dec 29, 2011 7:14 PM PST up reply actions

Plus Briles has been all Texas for his entire life.

Born there, played high school there, played at U of Houston, got a couple degrees from other Texas universities, and every single coaching stint so far.

by Kenneth Powers on Dec 29, 2011 7:17 PM PST up reply actions

I thought of Briles for a bit

But the ethics issues around him are too much.

by Nestor on Dec 29, 2011 7:18 PM PST up reply actions

Then again, there's no place like home.

From someone who left CA for a few years only to return.

by Kenneth Powers on Dec 29, 2011 7:28 PM PST up reply actions

I guess the question is

Do you think Washington Husky fans get as excited about rooting for the Bruins? Those guys were trolling hard over here for few days when Mora deal was being finalized. I didn’t sense a lot of love from the Husky fans for our program.

by Nestor on Dec 29, 2011 7:28 PM PST up reply actions

True enough

My real-life UDub friends are pretty awesome as well.

by Nestor on Dec 29, 2011 7:31 PM PST up reply actions

NorCal actually.

Was back in LA for the bar, but moved up for work.

You made it out to the new UCLA DC hangout since Mad Hatter got dumped?

by Kenneth Powers on Dec 29, 2011 7:37 PM PST up reply actions

Nope

Things change when have a little one. lol

Although, I have been to the new DC hangout for lunch few times. It’s pretty close to work.

by Nestor on Dec 29, 2011 7:38 PM PST up reply actions

Makes sense.

I went a couple times during the tournament last year. Not a huge fan, but still an upgrade from the tiny upstairs room at Mad Hatter.

by Kenneth Powers on Dec 29, 2011 7:41 PM PST up reply actions

Most of us in fact, do.

Why not be a proponent of the Pac-12? The only time I’d actively root against a Pac-12 team is when mine is playing theirs. I’ll be pulling for UCLA, did for ASU, and as much as it pains me as a Husky, will be for Oregon in the Rose Bowl as well. Does it benefit any of us if the Pac goes 0-6 in bowl games? Good luck vs. Illinois!

by TualatinDawg on Dec 29, 2011 10:09 PM PST up reply actions

Hey guys

I generally pull for the Dawgs. I always have. But just got turned off a little by the recent trolling. I do hope you get a good DC and get it turned around.

by Nestor on Dec 29, 2011 10:50 PM PST up reply actions

Yep

I will give Sark some credit for QB development wrt to Price.

by Nestor on Dec 29, 2011 7:31 PM PST up reply actions

they are

first in passing efficiency (194.05) and first downs (28.67), second in total offense (571.25 yards)

by LA Bruin on Dec 29, 2011 7:43 PM PST up reply actions

BTW

Hoops game thread is up. I guess the tip off is set for 11:07 pm EST. Lovely.

by Nestor on Dec 29, 2011 7:56 PM PST reply actions

And the Bears go up

Lots of vespas in the Alamo Dome.

by Nestor on Dec 29, 2011 8:58 PM PST reply actions

Austin Safaria Jenkins

Greta looking player. Wanted him badly to be a Bruin.

by Nestor on Dec 29, 2011 9:09 PM PST reply actions

Neu would have hard-counted

then burned a timeout when BU didn’t bite.
