Around SBN: 7 Important Questions About The Heat Vs. Celtics Series

It seems to me that the only answer is a total boycott

Utah State got national publicity by being absolutely silent at their BB game with BYU. We need to do something similar. I think the place to start is with some actual names. Geoff Strand would be helpful if he could be convinced to ask every man, woman and child to cut off the funds to UCLA, either directly or indirectly. And by indirectly, I mean by not giving money to anyone who advertises with UCLA.

I'm not local, so I don't know who that is. Anyone who advertises in the DB should be boycotted. Adidas should be boycotted. And we need more names. If Troy Aikman could be pursuaded, that would help. The leading rusher in the NFL, one Maurice Jones-Drew, would help. We can either do something to try to affect our future as Bruin fans, or we can do nothing. If we do nothing, we have no right to complain.

I can't boycott them anymore than I'm already doing.

Pisses me off, because while I was Christmas shopping the other day, I saw some really nice UCLA windbreakers I wanted to get. Nope, not going to do it. Not while The Donut is in charge.

And, I’m just waiting for The Donut to roll out his really bad decision on a football coach before I mail in my jersey. (HT Taz)

Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all the time thing. You don't win once in a while; you don't do things right once in a while; you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing. ~ Vince Lombardi

No! Please!

I want to make the point that cutting off funds to the UCLA fund hurts academics more than athletics. I know most of you already had your education at UCLA, but I’m still here and can’t imagine how things would be without donations from the great alumni we have (with California budget cuts and all).

Please, I urge you to keep giving to academic-focused areas of UCLA. Remember that boycotting all funds to UCLA hurts your fellow Bruins and it’s not guaranteed to help anything.

Sorry, Bruin

It was never easy for any of us. Get through the Big U the best you can. Cutting off funds will hurt a little now, but until Dan et al get the message, you guys are losing a lot more. You are losing the experiences the geezers had and took for granted. You’re losing your good old days. Tough love will hurt some now, but doing nothing will hurt many more.

Block needs to get the message

And unfortunately limiting the damage to his department doesn’t seem to be getting us anywhere. It’s time to start hitting Gene’s balance sheet.

Dude we'll be fine

Honestly, the tuition hikes are a bigger deal than donations. No offense.

The tuition hikes are due to a lack of funds

And this will perpetuate that. I just do not want to see academics slip at ucla because of a lack of funds that were held because of athletics problems. We’re a university, first and foremost.

Correction....

UCLA is a top tier university. As such – academics and athletics are inter-twined.

This isn't something that will affect academics immediately

So that doesn’t fly. If it continues for an extended period of time, then maybe you can make that argument. You can help prevent that by joining us and demanding that Block and Co. take this seriously.

How do you think UCLA got the reputation it has today?

There may be great stuff happening in labs and classrooms everyday, but you know what makes national headlines? The sports programs. Right or wrong, the quality of the university’s teams is a huge factor in UCLA’s reputation—and in the perceived value of the UCLA name on your diploma. Even if you personally don’t care about sports, it’s still in your best interest for UCLA to be a top contender, particularly in football and basketball.

Get you fellow students together and......

boycott/picket Morgan center and the Chancellor’s office and mansion. Of course – I do not want my with-holding of donations to hurt the students. However – as Alumni it is the only way to have UCLA leadership focus on issues. You can help – organize and let you voice be heard.

Take a look at the annual report

Here

According to the UCLA Foundation’s 2010-2011 annual report, far more of UCLA’s revenues are “sales and services” than “private gifts.” Even your student fees and “state support” (such as it is, hence my quotation marks) play a bigger role in UCLA’s finances.

I presume that athletics-related revenues, like merchandise sales, vending at the Rose Bowl, ticket sales, etc., fall under “sales and services.” If that’s the case, a dearth of quality athletic teams has far more potential than a donation boycott to harm UCLA financially.

Ugh

I get the rare chance to see my Bruins play in a bowl game in my home town of San Francisco… and my kids are finally old enough to come with me and enjoy the game… but the better choice is to boyco. This whole situation stinks.

Occupy AT&T Park

well, the outside of it at least. get a bunch of people together before the game and stand outside of AT&T park calling for donut’s head listing all the bungling he’s done. the broadcasters will undoubtedly talk about it because the game will be so boring. they’ll then proceed to state that the donut didn’t even make the trip to the park because he’s still in napa wine tasting. it probably won’t accomplish anything, but it might give me a reason to watch the game.
