Tragedy on OSU Campus, freshman football player passes away.
Tragic news from Corvallis tonight. Oregon State Freshman defensive tackle Fred Thompson collapsed while playing basketball on campus and died. Thompson, who was from the Bay Area, was 4 days short of his 20th birthday.
The thoughts and prayers of all of Bruins Nation go out to Fred's family, friends, and all our Pac-12 bretheren at OSU. You can offer condolences to the OSU fanbase at Building The Dam by going here.
Initial reports are that Fred suffered a heart attack, though cases like this of sudden death in young athletes are usually related to hypertrophy of the heart and lethal arrythmias. Whatever the case, this is just an awful event. It is also a stark reminder that, even at a time when we are wringing our hands over the state of our athletic program, college athletics are ultimately about the student-athletes and their futures, in and out of sports. It is a terrible tragedy that this young man lost his future so young. Rest in peace.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Thank you, gbruin
It’s hard to imagine a young athlete passing away due to a heart attack. We tend to think “heart attacks are for older people who are out of shape!” but everything can change in an instant for any one of us. Definitely puts a 3-9 year in perspective.
Here’s hoping for the best in the future for his friends and family.
Deepest condolences
to the Thompson family and the Beavers.
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
That's very sad.
No one is invulnerable. It makes our current round of issues here in the BN seem a bit trivial.
