Veto Seto mentioned on Yahoo Sports

I think the guys at Yahoo Sports generally do a pretty good job.  They broke the stories about bu$hgate and timmeh paying cash for OJ2.  They finally got a story about Veto Seto, but unfortunately covered it only superficially.  (Apparently the reporter's original story said that trogan had been an undergraduate at UCLA, then fixed it when the responses started coming in.)  The crux of the story was that CTSS rescinded the offer because of the outrage over the lack of qualifications, and that it was "common knowledge" that that trogan held the DC position under Cheatie "in name only" and Cheatie ran the defense. There was no mention of any backlash because that trogan was an integral part of the most corrupt athletic program in modern history, which to me is the real story here.  We'll never know for sure, of course, but I think CTSS noticed that the fans' collective outrage imade prominent mention of the crimes against humanity that the trogan witnessed and said nothing about.

I remain chagrined at my own hypocrisy at the hiring of Coach Chow.  We should collectively have made the same protest.  Coach Chow's qualifications were not the issue as they are with this latest trogan.  We collectively lost sight of our integrity when we allowed his glossy resume to blind us to the ract that he was not just on Cheatie Petie's staff  during bu$hgate, but was the offensive coordinator.  For all we know, he could have been the guy charged with keeping the cash flowing to bu$h and his extended family.  We should be as ashamed of ourselves Bruins.  That's just my opinion of course.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

As my wife explains it,

we were dumb to hire Chow anyway, because he was obviously the trogan horse! We let him into our kingdom (which was already in shambles) and let him run amock, make our players believe that they weren’t trusted or appreciated (see Randall Carroll & Brehaut), and mailed in a generally lackluster performance for three years. We were fools for opening the gates to him!

I always found that completely absurd

the “trojan” mascot is one of the dumbest. The Trojans, if the Iliad is to be believed, were slaughtered to a man. If the Aeneid is to be believed (it’s not, Virgil sucks) some escaped and founded Rome, which was great, then utterly destroyed by both barbarian hordes and the Turks. So, in the end, your mascots empires both fell, violently, due to interior corruption, arrogance, and misinformation. Wait, who am I kidding, that’s the perfect mascot for them!

Responsibility

A couple different issues…
First: Yahoo, ESPN, and the trogan times have all referenced the backlash against Seto as being key to the removal of his job offer. While some will say that blogging is simply an exercise in catharsis, this is also an example of the power, and therefore the responsibility. that comes with making comments on the internet. There were undoubtedly many avenues by which Bruin fans voiced their disapproval of the potential Seto hiring, but BN was certainly one of them. Our call to contact Dan Guerrero and Cancellor Block certainly added to that collective voice, and the end result was evident. We should keep in mind her, that what we feel and say does matter, and we need to direct it in a responsible and appropriate manner. Issues like Pauley renovation, ticket/attendance issues, baseball facilities, administrative apathy, and admission requirements for athletes are just a few of the critical avenues which need explanation and improvement at U.C.L.A., and where we may have an opportunity to affect those outcomes.

Second: As to our failure to protest the hiring of Chow based on his association with Cheaty and the Bu$h years, here is where I think there are gradations. If you look at Chow solely from the standpoint that he worked with Cheatey at *$c, then you can argue we should have disqualified him from the outset. However, Chow also had several things in his favor that separated him from Seto. Chow did not leave *$c and Carroll on the best of terms. Chow had been away form *$c in the NFL for several years before being hired by Neuheisel. Chow also had an outstanding resume and no one could question his experience. The fact that Seto had none of these things going for him made the case against him that much stronger. So I think the comparison between Chow and Seto is being oversimplified. There were valid reasons to support hiring Chow. However, if that oversimplification is enough in its own right, than I can’t argue against your conclusion that hiring Chow was wrong from the beginning.

I dont lump Chow in the same category as Seto.

Chow predates the Carroll era by a couple of decades and Heismans. Therefore he does not come from the ‘Carroll School of Cheating.’

Seto on the other hand got his intro to ‘coaching’ from Carroll and can be presumed to believe that the fruit falls not far from that tree.

As for the idea that Chow was a Trogan Horse, sabotaging us from within; I don’t buy it. Again, he did not spend the majority of his career at USC the way he did with BYU. I don’t see why he should be any more loyal to that school than any other he ever worked at.

Chow was a proven competent candidate who didn't work out

Seto is unproven and an unknown, hence unqualified for the job.

Still

I’m ok with an up and comer, but not one who derives his up and comer status solely from SC. I know we failed with the KD hire because we thought of him as an up comer, but I don’t think we should rule out every single candidate that is lacking DC experience based on that.

If some young defensive coach looks extremely promising and knowledgeable let’s go for it. I would have been ok with a Seto type if he worked in more than one program and was successful in his past jobs.

Wasn't Seto at SC like 3 years before PC got there?

But yeah, he did get promoted by PC & moved on with him..

Walked on under Hackett, and begain as a volunteer assistant under him.

He then continued as a Graduate assistant, and was later promoted into a paid (position) coaching position by PC.
