HIRE SHANNON NOW!!!! Letter of Protest as Maryland Offers Shannon.

It appears that we are on the verge of again bungling another potential DC hire. Multiple media outlets are reporting that Maryland has offered Shannon and that Shannon has reciprocated interest.

If we do not act quickly and decisively, we will surely lose the only credible DC candidate left.

It seems like our Veto Seto campaign was extremely effective. Our representatives need to know where we stand on the issue. If you are with me, and at this point considering the options we have left I don't see why you wouldn't be, please contact Dan Guerrero, Rick Neuheisel, and Gene Block. I know it is late in the day, and Rick expressed his intent to make a decision by this weekend, but I dont buy it and our efforts have worked at the 11th hour in the past. Here is the contact information for the aforementioned parties of interest.

Subject: HIRE SHANNON NOW!!!!

Dear Sirs,

As a UCLA Alum, I am writing this letter to show my support for Randy Shannon, the most credible and eligible DC candidate remaining. I don't know why we have yet to offer him, or have failed to consummate a deal, as it seems Mr. Shannon had serious interest in the position. As I do not have intimate details of the interviewing process, I can only speculate.

What I do know is this, of all the candidates who have reportedly interviewed, are available, and/or have had an interest in the position at UCLA, Randy Shannon is by far the most experienced, qualified, and has had the best on field results. Why we have not locked him down, since it appears he was ours for the taking, is beyond me. It now appears that Maryland has made Randy Shannon an offer and that he has reciprocated interest, according to published reports from credible media outlets.

I think that we can all agree that the results on the field have been unacceptable and not to UCLA's standard of excellence. The on field performance has been a result of two factors:

1.) Lack of Competitive talent on the field

2.) Lack of proper leadership.

I believe Rick, and his staff, have done a wonderful job addressing the talent issue. However, I think we can agree the leadership has not been exactly desirable. Rick took the first step in addressing the leadership issue by dismissing several underpeforming coaches. He now has to complete the task by hiring competent replacements that are upgrades over our previous leadership.

The events of the past few weeks have been embarrassing to the University, as well as its Alumni. I will not get into the details, as I am sure you are well aware of the issues regarding the replacement of Chow, and the entire DC search, including the DC offer and then offer withdrawal to Rocky Seto. We have lost credibility in the public eye and have appeared indecisive and in disarray as a result. We all both know how powerful public perception is in this business. As a result of the factors mentioned above, as well as the on field performance of our team, we clearly signed a substandard recruiting class this year.

I know it is your desire to build the best Bruin team possible and to build a Pac-12 Championship caliber team we can all be proud of. Please help us meet that goal by hiring the best leadership possible. Randy Shannon has built multiple top 10 defenses, and is a proven recruiter. Hire Randy Shannon and help us all sleep better at night.

If the right choices are not made, we will expect and demand accountability at all levels. UCLA is, after all, a public University. A proud University of the people, for the people, by the people and accountable to the people.

Proud Bruin in appreciation,

XXXXXXX

UCLA Alum '95
