[Update x3] NSD Thread Part 3: White Flips Back to UCLA; Facing Heat Neuheisel Backs Off (for Now) From Hiring Seto

Okay, it's definitely been a National Signing Day unlike one in recent Bruin memory.  Per the official site, CRN was scheduled to have a press conference at 4pm today.  You can stream it in at the official site.

Also, there are scattered reports (subscription info only) that Torien White may not be sending in his LOI to U$C after all, and that he may be honoring his prior verbal to CRN and UCLA after all.

More as we get it.  For now, consider this Part 3 of the NSD Thread.

[Update (M)]:  CRN confirms that Torian White has signed with UCLA.

[Update x2 (M)]:  CRN says to "make this day about the recruits.  We'll talk about coaches another time."

Star-divide

This may or may not mean that the firestorm of protest both here and throughout the online Bruin community may be having an effect.  If you are as opposed to hiring a thoroughly untested and unproven lifelong Trogan as your DC, then by all menas chime in and spread the word.

[Update x 3 (A)]: Here is UCLA's official release on the 16 member class:

Sixteen outstanding high school seniors or junior college performers have signed letters-of-intent or grant-in-aids to play football at UCLA, head coach Rick Neuheisel announced today. That number includes three prep seniors already attending classes and a junior college player who signed his LOI in December and will enroll for Spring Quarter.

Leading the class is quarterback Brett Hundley, rated the nation's No. 3 player at his position by Scout.com and SuperPrep. Hundley enrolled at UCLA in January, along with defensive end Sam Tai and linebacker Aaron Wallace.

"We filled several areas of need with this class, including offensive line and quarterback," said Neuheisel. "We feel this is a quality group of young men, both on and off the field, who will fit well with the classes we have signed the past few years. It's not as large as some of our classes because we did not have a lot of scholarship seniors but we think it has great upside."

by LoyalAlum94 on Feb 2, 2011 4:34 PM PST up reply actions

Look..

I dislike USC. But I think we cross the line when we besmirch people who live in the South Central community. I lived there, and when I was in grad school at UCLA, I lived in Westwood on Veteran. And you might be surprised that I was pretty uncomfortable often in Westwood (hello Ralphs!).

And it’s also this attitude that kills us with recruits from South Central high schools. There’s no real reason why kids from Crenshaw, Dorsey, etc. pick USC, other than there’s a perception that UCLA is the suburban school that doesn’t care about them. That’s reinforced by South Central coaches who remember when UCLA didn’t venture into their neighborhoods. For all of CRN’s faults, he’s tried to change that. It would be smart if we as fans didn’t reinforce the stereotype of South Central, particularly when I know most of you have never lived in the area. Hate SC, not South Central.

Ya know something?

Calling it “University of South Central” is offensive and demeaning. Saying stuff like that is really detrimental to our image and really detrimental to the reality which is there are good parts of town and bad parts. UCLA should be a goal for these kids, hell college should be a goal! But we shouldn’t sit in our tower and dispense judgment.

BIG TIME

We can herald the last two years’ classes all we want wrt to ratings, but we definitely filled some huge needs on both lines. Excellent recruiting class, IMO.

by hicalliber on Feb 2, 2011 4:58 PM PST up reply actions

Decent Class?

We got 14 guys… this is the kind of class that can kill a program.

I doubt even 1/3 of them will ever see the field. Not saying that 2/3 stars can’t become great players, but there’s a reason why they aren’t offered by most elite programs. If we have to resort to taking guys who were previously commited to Sacramento State this program is going to go no where but down.

by bruin11awp on Feb 2, 2011 5:26 PM PST up reply actions

8 linemen in the class, plus a 5 star QB

Those were our biggest needs, and we filled them. We have young talent at just about every skill position.

This wasn’t a great class, but it didn’t really need to be. If we don’t get skill position players next year, then we might be in trouble. But that’s not something that we need to worry about right now.

by SuperBruinMan on Feb 2, 2011 5:31 PM PST up reply actions

Look at the all pac 10 star rankings

Are you serious right now?

The pac 10 was the second best conference in the country. Stanford was a top 5 team. Arizona was top 25.

Irrelevant… right.

"Every day was a good day at UCLA." -Coach John Wooden

by OswegoBruin on Feb 3, 2011 12:49 PM PST up reply actions

Im not judging programs on a one year basis.

And plus, other than Stanford and Oregon here are the records for the other teams in the PAC-10:

USC 8-5
Oregon St 5-7
Arizona St 6-6
Arizona 7-6
California 5-7
UCLA 4-8
Washington St 2-10

These are not good records. The Big 10 had 72% of it’s teams finish above .500, The SEC had 58% of their teams finish above .500 (with 3/5 that did not go 6-7), we had 40% of our teams finish above .500.

bruin11awp: Would You Still Say That If They Were Going To Boise State?

On scout.com UCLA is ranked 54th and Boise State 64th. Boise State got 19 commits: 1@ 4 stars (JC recruit), 9 @ 3 stars and 10 not rated. That is somewhat typical for BS. In the past few years they have done pretty good playing with the big boys.

by rustyscrew on Feb 2, 2011 8:46 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed

It is all about development and flexibility/creativity in utilizing the pieces you have. That is the primary positive I hear about our new OC. Hopefully our next DC will be aggressive and flexible/creative as well.

by sponkey21 on Feb 2, 2011 10:22 PM PST up reply actions

I dont care what Boise State does

The rule is elite programs recruit elite talent. Without that there is not a goddamn chance in hell that we ever compete for a national championship, let alone a top 10 finish or a PAC-12 title.

If you’re okay with being thought of in the same context of Boise State, than you don’t have the right mindset to judge this program.

Don’t kid yourself by trying to spin this into any sort optimistic outlook.

by bruin11awp on Feb 3, 2011 1:49 AM PST up reply actions

Really?

look at TCU and BSU. They are elite programs, or you’re just excluding them because they’re small, which is idiotic. They did not sign “elite” players.

I still maintain

the class beyond Hundley doesn’t make or break our team.

Hiring Seto does break our team and our credibility as an athletic program.

As for the signing class… it’s still very poor talent-wise. However, it’s not a disaster with these kids on board, especially if a few turn out to be diamonds in the rough.

by BruinMW on Feb 2, 2011 4:34 PM PST up reply actions

Decent class

Not special in terms of star ratings (which I don’t give much credence to) but we definitely addressed our needs. We got a top of the line QB (Hundley), 5 Big Uglies on OL (Brendal = future center, Wysocki = mobile guard, Oliver & McDermott = not ready but upside due to frame and White = who is the BIG get IMO because he blew up his SR yr and has all the measureables) and got 2 more Uglies at DT(McReynolds & Tuliaupupu) which we can never have enough of.

Looked over the roster and we have 84 rides spoken for at the moment. We have 15 graduating seniors and Crissman may take a medical retirement. Don’t see any early departures except maybe Datone. Thus, we’ll have 16 to 18 rides for the 2012 class which is quite strong in Cali. We’ll need to stock up at WR (very strong in CA) and the secondary.

I like breaking down our roster and doing projections but I’m so disgusted right now I don’t think I can.

by BlueReign on Feb 2, 2011 4:42 PM PST up reply actions

wow

15 spots this year,

It seems like his dad was the only one who was looking out for Torian. I’m really glad that he listened to his heart, but it saddens me that he was this close to going to a school that he wasn’t 100% committed to. Also, I can’t believe that so many people are convinced that SUC is such a great place to be. They’re the Raiders/Cowboys of college football and they’re an embarrassment to the term “student-athlete.” I know I’m preaching to the choir, but still…

You all make good points, but my view is that CRN has been a PR maven up until now.....

…and now he needs to worry more about devoting himself to getting the job done on the field, start coaching his coaches, demanding results from the players, win games, take advantage of $UC’s hopeful demise, and show that he knows what he is doing. He has to show he’s a coach that will take us to the next level, and not just one that can take out a billboard and declare that his hiring solves all of the aggravation caused by the ineptitude of Dorrell. So far, he hasn’t proven that. I’m right in line with all of you. Seto does not excite me. I don’t want anything to do with anybody that ever attended or worked at $UC. I was very happy about dumping Chow (his $C history was a stain on our program) and hopefully Johnson is a good choice. But the coach has to show that he doesn’t give a damn what anyone else says, and show that he can be the coach we need. He needs to stand up to the AD (he may be doing that). Some of you quote Wooden, and who better to quote, but while I was there, I don’t believe Wooden wasn’t worried at all about what the fans thought about who he hired or recruited. We loved him because he ran a great program, with integrity, but most of all because he hung banners. CRN needs to win games in 2011 or go fishing in 2012.

You are of course, absolutely correct.

Wooden is God in our house. Signed copies of his book are on our coffee table. I started the year you left, and didn’t have a year without a banner. Record was 115-5 as I recall. My greatest memories were rushing for courtside seats at Pauley and $3.25 season tickets – $.25 per game. Prothro was also revered. I would like to see a return to that standard of coaching, control discipline and competition.

Definitely would have been nice

but I’ve really liked what I’ve read about McReynolds today. Given what we already have at LB, McReynolds may have been an equally big get for us since DL was a position of serious need.

McReynolds scout rating

seems low to me, based on what other services have to say about him. Could be because he missed half his senior season with an ankle injury? Sounds like he could be high impact guy fairly soon.

With all that's been said and done

I can finally take a deep breath knowing that we’ve landed a solid recruiting class that fills our needs. Like many of you, I was stressing out all day following the storylines, but with the talent that we already have (hopefully) starting to reach their potential, a stud QB and a new OC, I can’t help but feel optimistic about next year, though a cautious optimism at that.

As for the DC position, and for any other problems we may have with the administration/coaches/pauley project/etc. etc. which yes, I know is a big deal, I think I have to go with Rick on this one.
Let’s put all of that aside for now and deal with it tomorrow. For today let’s make this about the new recruits and welcoming them to the Bruin family.

And also about beating $UC tonight

I loved when Petros asked CRN about Seto and told CRN that Seto is unqualified for the position as having no 3-4 experience and I believe he also mentioned the 4-3 defense. An ambulance went by and I missed part of that conversation. CRN also sidestepped discussing his son’s status.

I was really surprised Petros made the negative comment about Seto. Sorry I got into this discussion so late.

CRN was on ESPN Mason & Ireland show and talked about his son, Jerry...

They had talked at length about where Jerry would go, especially since Hundley is in the same class meaning Jerry probably won’t see much playing time.

CRN said that they ruled out Colorado since CRN didn’t want to coach against him. One of the hosts commented later how tough it would be for CRN to have to OK or plan blitzes against his son. Interesting.

Most important to the decision though was that since an early age, Jerry wanted to attend UCLA. That’s where Dad made his name so Jerry wanted to follow the footsteps.

CRN also intimated that Jerry has better arm strength than he did at this age and that anything is possible since CRN admitted he was a late bloomer.

It doesn't really have anything to do with that

Other families could use the money more. If we need an extra scholarship in the future and he’s showing no signs of contributing, are we still going to be on the hook for him?

by SuperBruinMan on Feb 2, 2011 5:25 PM PST up reply actions

I have a hard time believing that

Jerry Neuheisel’s scholarship will be the reason we miss out on a future recruit. Something tells me if UCLA needed the ride, they’d find a way to make it work.

on a somewhat related note, I wonder if there’s any NCAA rule about CRN getting his kid on the roster without taking up a scholarship (similar to Daniel Hackett)—I honestly have no idea, so it’s just my curiosity

I'm OK with this. As a Dad...

…I think’s it great that he’s going to have his son in the program. I can guarantee you that if I was the baseball coach at UCLA…I would totally hand over a scholarship to my son to play ball for me. No doubt about it.

u$c and lame kiffin

I’m wondering how the news about kiffin and Tennessee will affect suc’s appeal. " Hey, look, we’re really trying look at mr. clean over here running our professional fball team." Anyway, just thinking, because they have 23 letters of intent and it’s difficult for me to imagine that the appeal won’t be decided before the deadline…and might the ncaa really reward suc and kiffen, given the further trouble? Seems to me, they’ll lose some of those guys.

And about the rankings and the ratings: with so few scholarships to give out this year, we couldn’t have rated very high. We have a ton of talent I believe, and much of it is ready to play now (the last two classes). I think CRN did a really good job, especially considering the chaos and our last season.

Loved the Hundley video posted above: wants to be on the honor roll and win the Heisman.

I thought USC

was on probation. Limited number of scholarships, how did they end up with 30 recruits?

by ovillarr13 on Feb 2, 2011 8:45 PM PST reply actions

If they lose their appeal

I believe they will only be able to give out 15 scholarships, in which case I am not sure how the NCAA manages whether the ones who have their offers retracted can attend other institutions. It will still be a high quality class for them, but their depth will get a gut punch when (not if) they lose their appeal. That is how I understand it, anyway.

by sponkey21 on Feb 2, 2011 10:25 PM PST up reply actions

So....

8-9 of their recruits enrolled in school already and therefore count against last years scholarships.
That leaves 21-22 scholarships.
USC appealed the sanctions, therefore the sanctions are stayed pending the results of the appeal. However, USC appealed asking for the penalties to be a reduction in 5 scholarships per year for 3 years, not 10. So they self imposed the 5 scholarship reduction. So they have 20 scholarships to give away, and of the 21-22 that do count against this year, most likely 1-2 or more will not eventually sign, qualify, etc.

My understanding is, if they win their appeal then it’s done because they are under the 20 scholarship limit they are asking for (assuming 1-2 do not qualify). If they lose their appeal then because they did not meet the 15 scholarship maximum, that gets extended one year, unless they play some games with the scholarships somehow.

by bruin1999 on Feb 2, 2011 10:52 PM PST up reply actions

Nope

close though… if the appeal comes down before april something, then they have to lose scholarships this year, whether they win (lose 5 scholies) or lose (lose 10). If it’s after, the penalty gets pushed back another year. IF it comes down this year, they have to tell 6-7 guys to shove off. I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest to see it being the poor JC kids they took to help them out immediately. Assholes.
