UCLA Basketball: Perfect Ending to Pauley!
Wow. First thank you to everyone who attended! The loud crowd (and the spirit of Coach) helped the team today. The best win for UCLA in a number of years. I am almost too pumped to write this. Box score is here.
So many stars to mention. Reeves Nelson had a great game, his best as a Bruin. To me the best story line was his defense. Playing against Derrick Williams the whole second half Reeves gave up only one FG! Oh, and he also had his career high in points and 16 rebounds.
And the last basket in the history of Pauley is by Wooden's great grandson, Tyler Trapani.
Also, we are tied for first place in the Pac-10 and have almost certainly punched our tournament ticket. I bet we are ranked for the first time since 2008-2009. Is this a perfect ending or what?
More after the jump.
It was also a classic Ben Ball game. We went through an offensive dry spell but the defense never stopped. Anthony Stover had 4 (or 5) of UCLA's ten blocks. Arizona, one of the top shooting teams in the country, shot 31%!
UCLA shot 52%, and except for a few minutes in the second half, looked awesome on offense. Going to the hoop early and often. We pounded the ball inside with the big three (Honeycutt, Smith, and Nelson), out scoring the whole Mildcat team 59-49.
UCLA dominated the game in every way possible. This was not a matter of Arizona looking bad either. Williams showed why he is a lottery pick in the first half. Arizona put together a clutch run the first time they were down 20 with a couple of clutch threes. But UCLA was too much, too good.
Nice time for the Bruins to put together a complete effort for the full 40 minutes. Great job guys. Great Perfect game and ending for "Old Pauley."
GO BRUINS!

As am I. I wanted to go to the game today.
Ended up, I couldn’t. But I’m happy enough right now watching it.
Very nice!
Mine was the one when Josh Shipp threw up that circus shot over the backboard to beat Cal. We’ll never forget these type of games!

that whole weekend was ridiculous
remember the game vs stanford where DC went right at Brook Lopez and got the call with almost no time left. crazy weekend
Same here.
Along with quite a few of my friends from the key core of the Den. It was very emotional at the end there. But what a way to go out!
That game was amazing!!
And seeing Tyler Trapani make the last basket in Old Pauley made the win even better. Awesome game by the Bruins.
There are no qualifiers for this game
No “we played well, but…”
Just a beatdown exposing Arizona’s soft gooey interior. This is what happens when we play with effort, passion, and intensity, no doubt with a big assist from the crowd today.
Big props to Tyler Trapani. Good night PP. We’ll see you on the flipside.
Exactly
That I why I crossed our great for perfect. Thanks for letting me write this. You would have done a better job but I was so happy to see this after watching every minute this year, even the Bruin TV exhibitions.
This will go down
as one of the really great performances that I’ve seen for the Bruins. Never thought i’d add one from this team to my exclusive list :)

CBH Coached a Great Game
His rotation of JS and AS, after both picked up 2 fouls in the first half, was brilliant.
Calling for slashes to the basket — an invigorated half court offense, was brilliant.
The restoration of Ben Ball D, was brilliant.
Our best game of the year, a full forty minutes of aggression and intensity, was brilliant.
And, the throwback uniforms, brilliant.
sjh
I caught the
first half on the radio, but the first words out oof my mouth when I got home was “Those need to be our home uni’s” . They looked great.
Most satisfying game in the last 2 years.
We’ve all had too many heart aches (attacks?) watching this team give play partial games all season long. I won’t even mention last year! Today we saw a complete game, a traditional UCLA basketball game.. the kind we have yearned for these last few years.
My hat is off to CBH and the entire team. They really brought it today, and it seems as if they really do ‘get it’ now. The road trip is a huge test to see if this was just an emotional last game in PAWKI (Pauley as we’ve known it) or whether this team has arrived.
GO BRUINS!
Precisely
So very well stated.
Our real Bruins came back, just in time for this game, at Pauley. Tyler T. sticks to business to the very end, and makes final basket, with the 1971 Bruins team looking on. Somewhere in heaven, Coach & Nell smile with calm pride.

Slightly OT
During the SDSU v. BYU game on CBS, the announcers put up 5 coaches they thought were vying for “Coach of the Year” honors.
the lizared was one of them — are you kidding me?
So was Sean Miller — a legit contender.
But, too early to start passing out coaching awards — let’s see how the season plays out.

Lavin has his team playing really well
in the tough big east. They’ve taken down big opponents, one after the other – UConn, Pitt, Nova today. And with a team of mostly seniors (often indicates a talent deficiency). As much as I don’t like the guy, he’s doing a good job right now.
by Captain Leebeard on Feb 26, 2011 3:41 PM PST up reply actions
He's also lost games he should not have lost
I think his team is talented and experienced.
He’s helped our RPI — so I can’t be too upset.

The classic block UCLA across the chest looked much better than it currently does. I hope we go back to it after this season. I’m still not used to it. The letters are way too big.
I'm so happy for TT
What a perfect fitting end to the old Pauley! I’m so happy I got to attend this game (1st for me in 15 years), let’s keep up this fire in Seattle!

This would have been an emotional moment for this Geezer no matter what, but ...
we played so close to the way Coach’s teams played — as a team, intense, 40 full minutes.
We played in a way that we can be “satisfied” that we did our very best.
I am so proud of this team for rising to this level at such an important moment for so many of us.
Pauley deserved this. And, the team and staff delivered it.

I said it a few weeks ago
it’s obvious to everyone now this is a tournament team. Who knew we were capable of playing at full capacity for 40 minutes. What a team effort. Props to RN for taking charge on both ends of the court.
I can’t wait to see how the team responds on the trip to Washington.
What a great day for UCLA Basketball.......5 great moments.
1) Bruins beat the snot out of “the standard” by double digits!
2) Shut the hell out of Williams, who was boasting, after a quick start, that he was going to score 40 points. uummmm……..sorry.
3) St. John’s beat Villanova, increasing our RPI.
4) BYU beats SD ST., increasing our RPI.
5) TT scores the last basket at Pauley. The joy that the family showed could only be matched by Coach from up above.
*Note: If ASU can beat USC, it’ll be a perfect weekend.
Slight disagreement
with your note. It is already perfect!

Arizona held to 19 second half points
NINETEEN! And ten of those came during that ridiculous 10-0 run.
Ben Ball defense… let’s keep it rolling.
Yeah that 10-0 run was fueled by bad shots that found their way in and a couple lazy stretches.
Otherwise defense was unbelievable. As soon as we took Stove or JS off D.Williams and let Reeves get him he was done.

Stover
I bought an extra 15,000 shares of Stover this afternoon. Mind you, the stock is still pretty cheap and I would advise others to participate. That guy is becoming a huge asset on Howland’s balance sheet. HUGE. Will be here four years. A shotblocking beast. High energy. Seems totally invested in the program. Hardly a clown. My favorite player of the last three classes.
I was his Orientation Counselor
He’s an amazing kid. Amazing.
He's doing a great job of orienting himself.
He was orienting Arizona shots all over Pauley.

I like him a lot too
Shot blocks are my favorite play in basketball and he is a swatting machine. He set the tone early in the USC game too with key blocks, I like him a lot. My best friend at UCLA lives next door to him on campus.

A critical component in today's CBB world
Guys like Stover are becoming increasingly valuable in today’s CBB world. Guys who you know aren’t leaving, improve every year, and buy into what the coach is selling. Teach this kid a drop step and a baby hook …. two years from know he will be a freak that changes games.
Let's teach him how to catch the ball first.

In their first years LMR and AA2 couldn't catch the ball, either
Stover has incredible upside.
And, he’s so likeable.

by Alanamaslama on Feb 26, 2011 7:59 PM PST up reply actions
that's right!
I keep forgetting that he redshirted last year. I see Stover’s game as more comparable to LMR than AA2. Regardless, I’m excited to follow Stover’s progress.
Stover
has elite length that we haven’t had since Ryan Hollins, and defensively he’s far beyond where Hollins was as a frosh.

Great game, especially the double team beat down on offense...
As everyone has already raved, great great game. What spooky, tremendous wonderful ending with the ball falling out of the sky into Trapani’s hands, like Wooden himself was guiding the shot… and he did his great grandfather proud by getting proper position for the rebound putback. Awesome. Now if he could only keep his shorts on…
A few other things I loved:
- the perfect execution, mostly by Josh Smith, of beating the double team down low. Time and time again, they’d double Josh, and someone like Reeves would go shooting to the basket and Josh would perfectly pass over the defense for the score. That was great, consistent offensive execution to watch that we usually don’t get to see from a Howland team.
- we can run with any team that wants to play man-on-man on us for an entire game. We showed it here, we showed it against Kansas… will we show it against Washington?
- I have to say… after hating the Pac-10 refs year after year for being inconsistent and making soft calls, the last few games, it really looks like they’re finally letting the kids play more, which I think helps all the Pac-10 teams in the tourney.
Really proud of these kids for sticking with Howland’s style, learning the defense, and understanding what it takes on offense to execute. Go Bruins!
Oh, and Reeves...
When Reeves hit 27 points, I think the Bruins had 64 points… at that point, he had accounted for 42% of the Bruins’ score. That is a good game.
I take back everything I ever said about Anthony Stover
Anthony came in and dominated the paint in the first half after JS and RN got two fouls. He was the key to victory.
We dominated Arizona despite relatively poor outside shooting. We pounded the paint and the offensive boards.
We got 40 minutes of hard play from the entire team.
JA had a crucial drive to the basket that stopped Arizona’s only second half run.
TH’s two threes were our entire outside production.
We played almost perfectly from the ten minute mark of the first half through about the 14 minute mark of the second half.
We dominated with almost production from Zeke and ML.
We were the better team and the more talented team.
We still have a huge upside remaining. We could have beaten them by thirty with some outside shooting and by making layups.
Reeves was a beast.
It is always great to be a Bruin, but these are the days we live for.
Go Bruins.
Besides RN getting 27pts and 16 reb's,
I think the most amazing stat was the 7-8 from the free throw line. What a game.
Great thing about this team
ML could be upset that we don’t run plays for our most consistent player. TH could be upset about the number of shot attempts he gets. They don’t care. When RN and JS are punishing the opponent, its all about winning for all of our players. Thank god that we have Zeke to take care of the ball. Go Bruins.
When Arizona went on their 10-0 run in the 2nd half
It was Jerime Anderson who made a very smooth drive to the hoop to end the run and keep the Bruins lead in double-digits. Seemed like a big play to me at the time.

Total focus
I like how the Bruins were focused for most of the game. Only 8 turnovers and a single missed free throw. The only other game they played smart and with total focus was the suc game. I am so proud of the guys, you can tell that loud atmosphere amped up Nelson, TH and JS. It was so cool to see them cheer with the students at the end of the game. I made sure to cherish every 8 clap, UCLA chant at the 2min mark at the old Pauley, I even tried to take a trash can, but there was security everywhere.

just got back from the game
my voice is hoarse and my hands are raw from clapping but it was fantastic! I’m glad the one game I was able to attend this season turned out to be one of the greatest I’ve seen all season.
The foul differential early on was pretty aggravating, Arizona was getting bailed out on pretty much every play. Joshua Smith got hacked numerous times and all the fans around me were going crazy against those refs in the first half. After that though was smooth sailing. I kept holding my breath for an implosion from our team but it never came, we really stuck it through to the end, and it was great.
Thank You So Much
Your energy and enthusiasm were a huge factor and you made all of us very, very proud.

Now? It’s this one.
I've been going there on and off for 45 years....and this is maybe my favorite, definitely top 5.
It was remarkable to be there for this.
Go Bruins!
Just got home.
Wow. It felt like every Bruin team that had ever played there was there (in spirit). I loved that the ‘71 team was actually there. They were the epitome of hard work and passion. The team today played like them. A whole team. Passion, fight, talent, no giving up on any play, and no bone head plays! I felt like I did as a kid in that place. The whole place alive, even the “librarians” who sit near us stood! But the spirit in the place. No one was going to let Pauley and all it means down, not the fans, not the team, not the spirits. I have to say it again, it felt like all of Coach’s teams were there, on the floor, playing hard and smart, way above the opposition, helping our players reach their potential, helping them be the team that could play great for 40 minutes. Thank you to everyone, now and in the past, that has made Pauley what it is! Great title, it was, absolutely perfect!!!!!

Love My Bruins
I am so proud of our Bruins.
I am so happy for Tyler. I hope Coach was watching.
COACH rejoiced today with angels all around him.
Bill Walton once put it succinctly.
When UCLA played basketball Coach’s way, even the universe readjusted and restored itself. With patchy white clouds against a bright blue sky on a brilliant late winter day in Westwood , I had the feeling COACH was indeed smiling down on us.
Today’s game showed Anderson coming into maturity, relieving Zeke with quality minutes of disciplined point guard play so sorely missed until this season. He penetrated behind the screen of JSmith, dished out assists, menacingly shadowed his Wildcat counterpart like an old hand whenever he stepped into the game.
Jerime, I am so tickled you finally outgrew your YMCA games.
Nelson is Pauley’s invincible force, when he turned on his game at its maximum notch. After that rebound basket on the heels of JSmith’s miss, Nelson spun around, cocking his head slightly forward and walked away in that ominous gait, both fists clenching tightly. Through the lens of my binoculars, I saw a gunslinger on the scene. He would level everything in the game, deny the Wildcats anything not without his say. Eyes glaring, Nelson did it for a full forty minutes.
At one point, after a foul, I even saw him motioned at the bench, signaling that he was not coming out yet. Well, the guy had some unfinished business to attend. It would not be over until COACH’s great grandson put in his rebound basket at the waning moments. That jolted the whole place into a deliriously wild frenzy as if Pauley just witnessed a divine revelation.
Undeniably, Honeycutt has the tools. He treated Pauley with his complete package, unwrapped, in full display mode. He will surprise many teams in March.
Many of us lingered, loitered just to soak in the inimitably magical aura of the place we have all become its hopelessly enamored fans over the years. Yes my fellow Bruins, there is a house COACH built with athletic achievements and academic excellence.
by Htse005 on Feb 26, 2011 5:36 PM PST reply actions 1 recs
So well put.
Today, it definitely was the house that COACH built. CBH and this team showed themselves to be good stewards of Coach’s place. I know CBH knew how important this was. And so did this team. Again, beautifully said. I too thought Coach was taking care of the weather. Especially for all those coming to the game and to campus, like bruin1996 and Curtis Rowe (who flew in from Detroit), who don’t get to make it that often.
Go Bruins!
The game is showing now on delay here
I only got to see the last 10 min of the first half on mbootymah’s feed, but followed the BN thread for the whole game. My wife asked why I’m watching the game when I already know the result. I am pretty sure she was just joking.

My wife was not kidding me when she said grown men, educated men
do not show their emotions when I finally stepped out of the building, dabbing my teary eyes.
Coach John Wooden was there today!
His spirit made Alex Schrempf throw up that miracle airball and had all the Arizona defenders playing up… and Tyler in the right place to throw in the put back. The camera shot of the team going wild and the shot of Coach’s family immediately after… Priceless… To see Wooden’s grandson get in the box score with the final made basket in Pauley… OMG! UCLA basketball is so beautiful… :)
I haven't EVER seen Ben Howland as pumped for a win
as after this game. He was high fiving, fist pumping, and playing to the crowd…..crazy, wonderful, perfect game! So lucky I have a friend who followed up and made me buy these tickets!!!!
When Pauley's security personnels and campus police escorted him off the court
after the game, many students reached over to touch or pat him. He furrowed his eyebrows, eyes glinting as his party made their way through the gauntlets, apparently gripped by the profound torrents of traditions, nostalgia and Pauley’s sustaining myths through the years.
Those security’s hands were practically fly swatting as more and more students surged toward the exit path. Little wonder someone here said he became weepy once inside the locker room. Don’t forget. After Larry Brown’s brief yet successful stint as headcoach that unfortunately embroiled the program with NCAA woes afterwards, then Harrick’s personal controversies nearly negated his crowning accomplishment. Howland is the one undisputably losest to restoring Pauley’s prestige. Even he, for a while, as we all know well, came under barrages of criticisms.
Today’s win really serves as his redemption, a coup de grace to his detractors if there are still any, for the moment.
Is it too late to go back to my list of Pauley moments and add a new Number 1?
The last basket made in the original House That Coach Built. That has got to be the greatest moment in the history of Pauley Pavilion.
You know how people say "God is a ______ fan"...
Watching that last basket, I couldn’t help thinking, “God is a John Wooden fan”
And visa versa.
I think Coach has god’s ear. Probably trying to get some help with the craziness in the world.
Go Bruins!
the 5-headed monster strikes again
Zeek and Lee both not shooting too well today but Honeycutt, Reeves, and Joshua Smith make up for it. We can truly be a force to be reckoned with when we’re this on. (the crowd probably helped too)
Sadly, we’re going to lose this advantage when we have to travel farther out to make “home” games next season.
UCLA women about to play on Fox Sports West.
Well, they would, had the UC Irvine-Pacific game not gone to overtime. Sheesh, fouling a guy on a wild 3-point attempt with 1.2 seconds left?? Irvine choked this game away to overtime, thus pre-empting our women’s game.
Our women are playing at Arizona State tonight. They’re currently 13-2, 23-3 overall, and ranked #11 in the AP.
Dang. Double OT.
Ugh, someone just end this game so we can see our women play.
It's been almost 9 months since coach passed...
I was working the night shift at work and was watching ESPN when they broke the news that Coach had passed. As I was initially reflecting on his life, his contributions to basketball, etc, I thought “I really hope the Bruins put together an incredible season next year, dedicate the season to Coach and make an incredible run.”
Sadly, the season didn’t really start out that way. The Bruins may have been wearing the patches to commemorate Coach, but they weren’t playing in a way that did honor to what he taught all those players for so many years. We saw individual talent, but we didn’t always see discipline. A certain amount of sloppiness seemed to almost taint each win. Earlier losses to Montana and USC really cast doubt on how far this team could go if they couldn’t play like a team for 40 minutes.
Thankfully, tonight was a turnaround. If you want to write a movie script about a team that puts it all together when it mattered most, just watch tonight’s game. The players cleaned up their game with far fewer turnovers than their season average. They executed their plays and didn’t let up. When UCLA’s offense went a little cold for a part of the second half, the defense stepped up to negate AZ’s chances at comeback. It was a complete effort and on the final night in the Coach’s house before the renovation, his great-grandson put up the final points. What a fitting tribute to an incredible coach and an incredible school. Way to go guys.
Dreaming of Westwood while in permanent exile in Virginia
Amazing stat on the recap at BSPN:
For just the 4th time in the last 15 seasons, Arizona was held under 50 points.
Roses are red, violets are blue...f*** $C.
Wow
At the beginning of the season, if you told me that our team would accomplish that, I’d laugh.

Way more than just a sporting event...
Watched the game like so many others and wondered at being overcome by so much emotion. 17 year-old daughter watching the game with me was kind in understanding that her old Bruin Dad was experiencing something that only Bruins can. But still, what a wonderful and blessed experience!
I’ve been trying to wrap my arms around what happened today and skimmed the book “Wooden” written by Coach along with Steve Jamison back in 1997 and came across a passage Coach called “Adversity Makes You Stronger.”
“Most all good things come through adversity. There’s a poem that says:
‘Looking back it seems to me,
All the grief that had to be
Left me when the pain was o’er
Stronger than I was before.’
-Unknown
I believe that. We get stronger when we test ourselves. Adversity can make us better. We must be challenged to improve, and adversity is the challenger."
Apparently everything is working according to Coach’s plan.
God bless him!
What a difference six days makes
On the court and on these message boards. Whatever happens the rest of the season this team made this one moment quite memorable and no one can take that away from them.

Black pyramid pins.
Does anyone know if they will be selling the pins the coaches were wearing today (both teams)?
Go Bruins!

I’m kind of surprised to report. Don’t forget to get your throwback ’64 jersey there, though!

Stover
came up to the 200 section (north) after the game, while radio was still broadcasting. What a great young man. He is the kind of student athlete we need.
Glad to have great
passionate bruins. With the way Bob and Gordon have left, it’s good to know our team will fight for the four letters……
In retrospect, Bobo basically was a fluke, even in high school
Of the few times Howland put him in, perhaps out of desperation to stem the onslaught, his painfully slow movement within the paint reminds me of someone on a pair of pogo sticks. His heels never left the floor even when fighting for rebounds.
Relegated to the sideline most of the time, all he ever did was waving that towel, grinning that silly smile whenever a Michael Roll three point play edged the score closer.
That was a good shove you gave him, Howland.
Gordon was skilled, warts and all. He would flourish under Paul Westhead’s quick pace, rhythmless offense without defense strategy. Remember Hank Gather’s Loyola Marymount team ? It simply runs and guns teams into submission. For an out of control, temperamental Gordon, it would be his cup of tea. Howland’s tight rein, highly structured coaching was a bag of poison to him.
Good riddance. I wish he was watching this afternoon.
Nelson’s adrenaline fueled, raging bull performance dazzled everyone. Rebounding, shot blocking, driving to the basket, forcing turnovers, even to his chest bumpings with Anderson and others worked perfectly. Honeycutt was of course everything ever said positively about him.
At last season’s end, gloom and doom, not to mention that seething anger towards a certain long range bomber from Serbia utterly gripped BN, I remember saying Nelson & Honeycutt had to be the core of the next season’s team. Quite a few of us echoed that sentiments too.
Today’s game said we are prophets.
We were there and it was the most incredible experience
We hung around for the photo on the court. Then some of the players came out for pictures with fans—especially the kids. My grandson ran over to get his Wooden pyramid signed. I think the relief and joy was etched on the players faces, of of the mom’s said tears kept coming. I must say all the players that signed and posed for photos were incredibly gracious and kind to a young boy and made his day—-Zeek, Tyler Lamb, Tyler Honeycutt, Tyler Trampani, Josh Smith, Anthony Stover, and Reeves. Everyone just I talked to-felt the same way that something special had happened- that each kid had reach down and pulled out their best and together as a team, that best is pretty darned good. Infact, so good it is kind of scary. Like someone said, the score of 71- for the NCAA champs with the basket by Tyler —Coach just sent us a message, and he was smiling.
As I talked to a guy from Arizona, he said he even felt it.
Thanks for that
I couldn’t find it online earlier, even though I saw it at the stadium. Now I can keep reliving the moment.
Hats off to a great coaching job by coach Howland!
Raise your hand if you picked us to be contending for the pac-10 title after a down year last year … Coach deserves major credit for concentrating on teaching and growing this young team to peak at the right time towards the end of the season, in the midst of incessant criticism from some of our Bruin faithful. Great job, coach, and great tribute to Coach Wooden!
I think you mean
In the face of doubters and people with low/no expectations who were satisfied with subpar effort. In the face of people who viewed our reasonable expectations as impossible and who constantly and incessantly tried to lower the bar below the dignity of the program.
I think he means exactly what he said...
and I agree with that sentiment. Howland has done a great job this year. The team is showing signs of peaking at precisely the right time, just prior to the tourneys. And there has been way too much criticism.
Good for them and good for Howland. And please, don’t anyone try to set my bar for me. I’ll put it wherever I want. I’ll enjoy this season as I wish. As well, I’ll respect everyone’s way of doing the same.
Also, there is someone on this board that posted a while back they would give credit to Howland only after UCLA makes the Dance.
I, for one, cannot wait to see that post!
Oh so you'll set the bar where you want
And you’ll bitch about other people trying to set it, yet you’re perfectly fine being judge and jury on what has been too much or too little criticism. Who are you to say what has been too much?
Honoring '71 Team Today
I hope this team had an opportunity to meet and listen to Sidney Wicks and Curtis Rowe from the 1971 national title team.
Best Game I've Been To
Well, I knew it was going to be the best game I’ve been to before I got there, but NEVER imagined such a storybook ending. Of course, I should have realized this as I was driving towards Westwood this morning and instead of rain, saw the most beautiful cumulus clouds ever moving away. You never see those clouds in LA! What more is there to say? The team and the crowd were rocking for 40 minutes finally! Nan and Jim Wooden and the ‘71 Championship team… Tyler Trapani with the last shot! Taking pics afterwards on the Nell and John Wooden Court. This is the stuff dreams are made of! Maybe that’s why I mysteriously couldn’t sleep well for the past couple nights!
Question, I haven’t gone through my photos/videos, but I may have a couple I could post as well. Is the only way to post the videos to do it via youtube? Just wondering.
One last commente
the yellow shoes are growing on me. I think the should wear them in Washington, and maybe in the final four :)
Reeves Nelson
Right now Reeves Nelson is UCLA basketball.
Man oh man, he was everything you want to see and then some….
I have watched the replay twice tonight. If he can put that on the floor each game from this date forward, we have a run ahead of us.
I couldn't have envisioned a more perfect, storybook ending
Go Bruins! Keep winning for Coach!
The thing is, it happened.
hey I don't know if anyone watched CBH's postgame conference today
It seems Blake Arnet has been given a scholarship since last quarter. His mother passed away about a year ago.
Wow
I only saw the portion of the conference where he was talking about Trapani, but my belated condolences to Blake. That’s a rough thing to go through for someone of college age (or any age, really). I’m glad CBH and the program did right by him.
With Carlino gone
there was an open scholarship.
by SuperBruinMan on Feb 27, 2011 12:57 AM PST up reply actions
Yep.
I was saving it for MOnday’s note. Happen at the start of last quarter.
So does it only go for this season? (noticed he's a junior)
Or does that depend on if we find someone to replace Honeycutt’s scholarship at the last minute?
All scholarships are on a year to year basis
though of course it’s usually understood that once a player gets one they will continue getting a scholarship each year until they finish playing. It’s entirely possible that Arnet may have gotten one just for this year, with next year’s being conditional on not needing it for a more skilled player…but I have absolutely no inside information about it.
Roses are red, violets are blue...f*** $C.
Regardless
it’s still one of the best 20 to 30 rides we’ve ever given.

Depends on the circumstnaces, at least for this sort of case (walk-on before senior year)
I recall this happening with a couple of football walk-ons a couple years ago (late CTS era or early CRN, I forget which); the fishwrap made a big stink that the scholies were not continued after the one season, despite their conditionality on not needing them in the following season being made clear to the players.

Thank you all
I come to this board to enhance my experience of each game. I knew as I was watching the game today, that the board would be filled with exactly the kind of heartfelt joy I’d felt in watching it. So, thank you to all of you for sharing and multiplying that feeling.
This was the game we’d all been waiting for all year — a game that, potentially, let the Bruins feel what playing a game in true Coach fashion feels like. The focus, the relentless intensity, and the precision execution that comes from it. It’s a feeling they can duplicate. It’s a feeling they will want to duplicate. It’s infectious in the best possible way. If they simply maintain the feeling of that game, they will be nearly impossible to beat for the rest of the year.
GO BRUINS!!!
Thanks, indeed
I couldn’t take in the game live. But, with highlights last night, tivo this morning, and BN since, I’ve been able to relish this, not only again and again, but still.
While my wife is watching the Oscars “pregame” hoopla, I’m on my laptop to BN, channeling that lovely Bruin energy.
Just read through all these comments because I am so elated with today's performance.
I’m so proud to be a Bruin.
The campout last night was sort of brutal. Our tent was leaking and I woke up in a puddle of ice water. Thankfully no signs of pneumonia yet. It was a fun night though and more people showed up than there was room in the student section (I pray for expanded lower level student seating for new PP, just saying). Anyway, the dedication of all the fans was great to see.
Boy I did not expect to see such a PERFECT game today. Best sports game I’ve ever been to in my life. Everything looked amazing. Packed house, high energy play from UCLA, high energy in the Den, dunks, blocks, defense. Everything was so awesome.
Everyone else said it, I’ll say it. John Wooden was smiling over us today. Something was there today. The campout was a test for true fans, and so many True Bruins stayed the course and made the best of the rain and cold, and were rewarded with a sunny day after a perfect game.
Continue this amazingness Bruins. I love this team. I love our fans. I love John Wooden.
WHAT!??!?!?!?!?!?!
Per the Campaign of Champions site
the students are getting not only the current sideline but also behind the basket on the visitors’ bench side in the renovated Pauley.
awesome!
This is a much needed upgrade to compete with other student sections across the nation.

Huge props to you

Kevin Love
Off topic, but wanted to put it somewhere, and it seems fitting to put it here. KL so far (with 6 mins to go) has 34 points and 20 rbs. Wow. He’s 4 games short of breaking Moses Malone’s double-double streak.
RW also had a great half against the Lakers with 17 in the 1st half and his first left handed in-game dunk. It was a beaut….going behind his back to get away from Kobe.
Just wanted to share more Bruin joy!
Go Bruins!
