Congratulations to Kevin Love

Congratulations KL:

Kevin Love has made double-doubles automatic. He’s taken the drama out of getting them.

So he added a little drama himself Wednesday by almost not playing due to a sore knee (he banged knees with an opponent last game and it swelled up), then playing with a bulky brace on it.

Didn’t matter.

He got his record 52nd consecutive double-double fast (in the middle of the second quarter with a free throw) as his Timberwolves were blowing out the Indiana Pacers. That moved him past Moses Malone into first on the modern list, since the NBA/ABA merger.

To the YoutTube we go to relive the moment  it happened in Minnesota:

Star-divide

Love as usual was gracious and humble after the game:

And they almost left him off the all star team

It’s funny to think back and remember that there were people who doubted his abilities, both coming into college and going into the NBA. KLove is an example for how all Bruin early entrants can make us proud, representing the four letters with class (and a lot of skill).

Congrats to Kevin!

What an fantastic achievement in terms of effort and consistency (are you listening, current Bruins?). It’s incredible to think of all the centers/forwards who have played since Moses Malone’s days that KL has surpassed – Kareem, Shaq, Hakeem, McHale, Worthy, Pippin, Karl Malone, etc… I wonder how far he can take this.

And to think people called him a tweener and he would be hard pressed to be successful in the NBA.

Congrats KL

A classic Ben Ball warrior and how he represents the four letters every time he steps on the court and carries himself in real life. He was here for just one year but he set the standard in today’s cynical world of college hoops, how it is possible to remain a “true Bruin” even if not being around for the entire 4 years.

I "knew" he would.

When he tied Moses Malone for the record, it was a foregone conclusion in my book. I would never say it loud, so as to not jinx it; so I’m really glad Klove has written his name in the history books.

Just goes to show that hard work is its own reward.

Exactly what Coach would say

Simply doing his best, and letting the results speak for themselves.

I hope he can get some more hardworking talent around him and see that hard work translate to the standings, too.

He makes it seem quite routine, and obviously it's not

This kind of streak makes me think of guys like George Brett. In his remarkable run in the mid-80’s, he made it look so easy that it was actually a surprise when he didn’t get a hit. Another example that comes to mind is Joe Montana in the fourth quarter with the game on the line. It seemed effortless.

It would be nice if his team could win a few games. That’s not right. It would be nice if his team could win more than a few games, because a few games is all they’ve won.

I love Kevin Love

On Twitter (@kevinlove) he’s doing some tweets for charity. People are asking him UCLA questions!

GreenEgg3AndSam Sam

kevinlove Kevin Love
@GreenEgg3AndSam my whole UCLA team was a family that year. Not only the players but the coaching staff & personnel. Hard to pick just one.

Ingle32 Addison Ingle
@kevinlove who do you have winning the NCAA tournament this year? #Hoops4StJude

kevinlove Kevin Love
@Ingle32 I’d love to say I have my Bruins winning the NCAA Tourney, but if I had to pick anyone else I would pick Ohio State.

DJMyron Myron Parcon
@kevinlove #Hoops4StJude did u consider staying at ucla for more than one year or had u already made up your mind …

kevinlove Kevin Love
@DJMyron I think if Russell, Luc, DC & I would have stayed another couple years at UCLA I do believe we would have won a national title.

Love this one though:

Classic KLuv

Never thought he’d be thriving at this level let alone breaking 30+ year records!!!!! Always happy to see former Bruins excel and he’s done with class!

Incidentally, the all-time NBA double/double streak is 227 held by Wilt the Stilt

Not sure why they have to distinguish everything since NBA-ABA merger as modern. They don’t do that for the NFL. Does that make Wilt, Russell, West, Baylor, Robertson, and part of Kareen’s career ancient?

I think it has to do with competition

If you have two leagues with a claim to being the place with the top level of competition, then the overall talent is split in some way between them. It doesn’t make older players’ careers irrelevant in any way, but if you want to compare something like records across eras which is already a difficult task given rule changes among other things, then I suppose making the distinction here is a way of acknowledging that different records were achieved under different circumstances.

Now if the NFL in its past had an alternate league of the same level of talent as the ABA had with the NBA, then I’d have to reconsider some, although football has undergone even more drastic changes than basketball since the early days.
