UCLA v. Oregon Second Half Tournament Karma Game Thread
Not much to say here but that we just went through an ugly damn 20 minutes of basketball. Good news is that if you made it through that alive, nothing's likely to kill you. Time for a clean thread in hopes of also cleaning up this tonight's karma. Here's the first half thread if you really want to relive the misery. This is your new game thread

Oregon is beneath us
We won’t bring it for peons like those in green tonight. How dare you pesky demanding fans demand such a thing?
Good thing that John Wooden...
…is dead, this would kill him.
So this is what's going to happen
At the start of the 2nd half, the Oregon players are like “Eyyyy, we got this…”
BOOM. UCLA goes on a 15-0 run and takes the lead by 1 point. Then the lead changes about 15 times throughout the half until the final minute where UCLA finally seals the game in an alley oop to Josh Smith.
In the post game interview, Ben Howland continues to shatter his ice cold reputation as he foams at the mouth when answering questions about UCLA’s exciting comeback.

Josh is getting utterly abused
And getting nothing
Where the hell was this team 20 game minutes ago?
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
Ducks are on fire & aren't slowing down much
We need to catch up here soon before our guys start slowing
Fangs out play for nelson...
don’t bite your own foot
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
Oregon wants to win this game. We want to go to the big dance... because...
well because we don’t have to play well to earn it. At least that’s the way it seems.
Reeves is REALLY bad so far
His defensive positioning has been absolutely dreadful. Smith saved him on the block. Why does a Bruin guard pass it to Nelson on the break? You know it’s gonna be a charge. UCLA with better effort, but not playing cohesively.
Blame Reeves
His poor defensive positioning has made Smith work extra hard to deny post shots.
For anyone not thrilled with FSN's coverage of our games
it appears you’ll have no more reasons to complain after this evening.
Roses are red, violets are blue...f*** $C.
Honestly ... this game could be broadcast with Super Bowl quality coverage
But it won’t make things better.
One guy came to play tonight
And it is Honeycutt?!?!? Of course he only plays one way but still he is the only one.
Lee
at least he attacked the basket on his last basket. Need more of that from him.
Yeah but he passing up a three
Look anderson and Lee have excuses, I think Anderson is sick still.
I'd rather he pass up the 3
If it means driving to the basket and getting a higher percentage shot or drawing fouls.
Good D effort by RN and BL
should have called the duck for the offensive foul into BL.
greg in denver, UCLA guy for life - BruinsNation.com
Yep and Lane yelled
I like the passion from Lane
Yeah but whenever you write that
You get attacked by a bunch of jackasses who don’t watch the games apparently who say that only wins matter.
Where was the foul there on Lane earlier?
I don’t get some of these SPTR calls sometimes.
I think CBH needs to take Reeves out of the game. He’s taken the team out of the game all by himself. He needs to sit down and settle down.
Reeves and Singler were going at on the other end
SO the “fine” refs called one on Lane on the other side.
They called that on Lane?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
What a fucking joke!

I swear to God if I'm ever back on campus
I will not stand still because Reeves Nelson will wind up running over me….
I'm sorry, I know UCLA is stinking it up tonight.
But the officiating is awful.
Oregon is bumping the Bruins all over the place and we are getting no calls.
On Lee’s missed FT, Lane got the rebound and got pushed 6 feet past the Ft line. Before that last TO, when he was surrounded, Catron pushed off and no call. ust two examples that came to mid but this has been happening all night. Smith getting hacked a lot too.
Need to throw a zone at them
This is getting ridiculous
Did that guy's shirt say

Oh, ducks… never mind.

UCLA is playing like crap and all...
but touch fouls on UCLA and Oregon gets away with mauling players… what a joke.
@foryourhandicap
CBH should get a technical
Maybe that will fire up his pathetic lifeless team.
is embarrassing
the right word for a performance this bad? he should put in Schrempf and Arnet and tell his starters to enjoy the bench
I'm thinking
we may not have to worry about a potential second-round match against a one-seed…then again, we’re probably not going to see a second-round match regardless.
Roses are red, violets are blue...f*** $C.
This will actually work out quite well for me.
I was wondering how to work out my schedule for Saturday and now I don’t have to worry.

Dear god I wish these telecast
WOULD STOP PRAISING Oregon’s interior D….refs are giving that to them.
we could be..
dropping to right in the middle of the bubble with this one. USC keeps winning and if the Colorado’s and Marquette’s of the world keep jumping us who knows
UCLA is in.
They’ll be a 10 seed somewhere far away and, if they play like this, will get blown out by Old Dominion or Butler, or someone like that.
by orlandobruin on Mar 10, 2011 7:45 PM PST up reply actions
yes they are probably in
.. but this will drop the RPI like a rock where will be at least stacked up against other bubble teams. True we probably come out ahead against the likes of UAB and Va Tech, but this is the worst game I have seen all season. On the plus side we do go to a 10 or so maybe even 11 which gets us a potential easier 2nd round matchup. Now we are just a scary looking 11 who might fold like a tent
Not probably in. UCLA is in. Bet the farm on it.
Agree with the rest of your take.

See the big picture. It's a pre-bracket buster
This is just part of a greater strategy to lull whomever we play in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to sleep.
Brilliant, when you think about it.
If we were a 16 seed
We would win our first round matchup. This team needs to feel disrespected before it can play well. It’s a disease.
I was worried
that I would miss the Pac-10 final on Sat. because I will be on a plane, but I guess I don’t have anything to worry about.
I'd say that's a safe guess

WTF?
Where was the foul there? When it rains, it pours. SPTR have it in their heads that there’s not gonna be a UCLA comeback tonight.
Have we had a single dunk in this game?
RN and JS aren’t taking it to the hoop strong
They shouldn't bother
They’ll either get called for a charge or get hammered with no foul. Refs have it in for them right now. And their play hasn’t helped either.
Shouldn't need more than one
They are never getting the message.

USC's resume as an at-large doesn't pass ours

I'm not sure we're actually looking worse
it’s just lasting for a much larger % of the game.
To be fair, I've barely been watching this shit
just barely too much effort in doing that, it seems.

Good night.
This is a new low, utter embarrassment. Losing by 22 to to a 13-17 team in L.A. CBH accomplishes nothing by continuing to play the starters. He should sit them all now and send a message. Who cares if the bruins lose by 20 or 30 at this point?
Nah... They should play
They’re the ones that embarrassed UCLA, they should not be allowed to get the easy way out by sitting out the rest of the game.

He and Smith are being gang raped in the paint
It was gonna boil over at some point.
for the most part, we are a hurt team...
Howland’s patients have been outlined previously, so for some, practice probably wasn’t as smooth as Howland would have liked (I’m speculating)
but for the healthy guys? WTH?
2 points:
1. I think our BRUINS are stuck with playing PAC10 ball where we keep looking at the refs for calls for every contact…I remember when CBH stepped in with our Ben Ball Warriors, he instilled toughness in them, playing the east coast tough nose style ball
2. Don’t want to really re-open this topic, but, I think our players keep thinking they can get away with 8 minute efforts every game…not CBH’s fault they are not playing mature bball…sit them down, I know, I know, but if we can’t win with our first talent squad, I’m not so sure we can do much with our secondary squad. Besides, our guys are so immature, I’m not so sure they will get any message no matter what CBH does…
Re-opening the topic?
The topic has never been closed because this team has brought it up all season except for 2-3 games.
Anyone who shoots another jump shot should get pulled.

That's the point.
They aren’t watching. They are looking at a stat sheet. TH has A skills but D effort. Unfortunately, that’s good enough to make a stat sheet look good.

after suffering through football season
i was really hoping the BBall team was ready to turn the corner! The performance tonight was PATHETIC!
Knowing a good seed is on the line how can you come out so uninspired? Especially with your coach jumping up and down fired up?
This team really embarrassed the four letters on their jerseys tonight!

Although I'm dyed in the wool Bruin blue, this team is really hard to cheer for.
With 1 or 2 exceptions all season, they just don’t seem to play like it matters.
is it possible we played ourselves out of the tournament with tonight's performance?
just joking…or am i?
No.
UCLA is going to the NCAA. Just like Villanova (lost 5 straight) and some other teams that struggled in their conference tourneys. UCLA is in. Bet the house on it.

Just heard...
…on the telecast – “If this team came out and played a full game, they’d be tough to beat.” So, who should take the responsibility that they don’t? I’m just asking.
Terrible
Physioc said that the Bruins at shootaround were joking around and loose. That’s their problem. They don’t have a leader that will get in their faces and tell them that this is serious business. Instead we have a bunch of immature clowns playing their worst ball at the worst possible time. Their last 3 games have been awful.

He's gonna need it himself
To calm down after yet another listless performance from his players. I bet he’s wondering why he recruited some of these guys at times.
that's one of those things that gets spun depending on whether the team wins or loses though
if they win = cool, calm demeanor
if they lose = not taking it seriously
Even on wins
They haven’t been pretty. Arizona was probably the only win where they were focused from start to finish.
This game is not an aberration
we’ve played more minutes like this than we have played well.

This was a matter of time
It was going to happen. We all knew it in the back of our mind. It would have happened most likely if Klay Thompson wasn’t puffing it up.
Worst part
They won’t learn their lesson. They haven’t all season. Maybe if someone can do a jedi mind trick on them to think every game is the last one at Pauley before the renovation, we’ll see them play hard the whole game.
Honeycrap waits until the game is out of reach to start attacking the basket. He reminds me a lot of David Justice — pretty numbers at the end of the season, but most of them during garbage time.

Well, the ignorant optimist in me
hopes that them being thoroughly humiliated by stringing together two of their bad halves will light some sort of fire. This blows.
That should be easy to write
UCLA players manage to suck and blow at the same time.
CBH has got a lot of work to get these guys ready for the tournament. I just wonder at this point if he’s all coached out. The players have played 2 weeks of terrible basketball.
TH knows he has just one more game before the NBA
Dreaming of Westwood while in permanent exile in Virginia
I watched a few early games
from the other smaller conferences and it kills me to say they were scrapping for every loose ball like it was the final play of the game!
Why cant kids who play at the most storied school in basket ball history match that kind of intensity?
"Success is never final, Failure is never fatal. It's Courage that count's" - John Wooden.
Ask the players
It’s not like Howland hasn’t had players in the past that played hard every game. Unfortunately, the days of Afflalo, Mata, LRMAM, Aboya, Westbrook, etc. look to be in the distant past.
The nail right on the head!!!!!
"Success is never final, Failure is never fatal. It's Courage that count's" - John Wooden.
Even on that
They don’t even put out the maximum effort to get themselves into a higher draft slot. It’s like some of them are content to just be a first-round pick, even if it’s the last pick, as long as they get that guaranteed contract. So you see just the bare minimum to tease scouts and fans on the “potential”.
I don't blame CBH
unfortunately these kids obviously don’t understand or appreciate what the four letters mean to us fans who live and die UCLA…
"Success is never final, Failure is never fatal. It's Courage that count's" - John Wooden.
I agree...
for all who say CBH can’t coach because we lost the Final Fours with our best Ben Ball Warriors…hell, we lost to Florida with many doing well in the NBA, and Derrick freakin’ Rose, who some think could climb his way to the NBA MVP talks…we’ve just been out-talended in the PG department…so I guess I’ll blame CBH for not recruiting top PG after all these years…
Shame for all the fans who paid to see the game
I’m curious, when the Bruins get back to campus after putrid displays like this, how do fellow students interact with the the players? How much do the Daily Bruin’s writers criticize the team?
The players are spoiled brats.
WHAT!??!?!?!?!?!?!
by true torture on Mar 10, 2011 8:15 PM PST up reply actions
just sad
probably worst performance by a high seed in any post season tourney this year (no, I didn’t check the stats). Other high seeds lost, by a couple of points. Very disappointing end to Pac 10 season. Hard to see how we do much in NCAA, but “never give up, never surrender”.
Bruins always play up or down to their opponents level.
We always play better against the higher caliber teams. What does that tell you? It’s all mental.
Better to lose tonight than next week.
It will be interesting to see how this team responds on the big stage. I, for one, cannot honestly predict a win since will likely be a 10 seed and match up against a 7 somewhere far, far away. Cleveland, Charlotte, Tampa, Tulsa?
This team is much better in the friendly confines of Pauley. Staples seemed like a road game, as will every game from here on out.
If UCLA loses 1st round of NCAA Tournament...
What will the consequences be? We’ll all wait another year and have this same conversation next season…
Failure is becoming acceptable at UCLA…
Not sure I'd be as bumed as i originally thought
if TH leaves early.
