UCLA v. Oregon Second Half Tournament Karma Game Thread

LOS ANGELES, CA - MARCH 10: Tyler Honeycutt #23 of the UCLA Bruins lays the ball up against Tyrone Nared #31 of the Oregon Ducks in the first half in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Pacific Life Pac-10 Men's Basketball Tournament at Staples Center on March 10, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. Not much to say here but that we just went through an ugly damn 20 minutes of basketball. Good news is that if you made it through that alive, nothing's likely to kill you. Time for a clean thread in hopes of also cleaning up this tonight's karma. Here's the first half thread if you really want to relive the misery. This is your new game thread

So this is what's going to happen

At the start of the 2nd half, the Oregon players are like “Eyyyy, we got this…”

BOOM. UCLA goes on a 15-0 run and takes the lead by 1 point. Then the lead changes about 15 times throughout the half until the final minute where UCLA finally seals the game in an alley oop to Josh Smith.

In the post game interview, Ben Howland continues to shatter his ice cold reputation as he foams at the mouth when answering questions about UCLA’s exciting comeback.

Reeves is REALLY bad so far

His defensive positioning has been absolutely dreadful. Smith saved him on the block. Why does a Bruin guard pass it to Nelson on the break? You know it’s gonna be a charge. UCLA with better effort, but not playing cohesively.

But the officiating is awful.

Oregon is bumping the Bruins all over the place and we are getting no calls.

On Lee’s missed FT, Lane got the rebound and got pushed 6 feet past the Ft line. Before that last TO, when he was surrounded, Catron pushed off and no call. ust two examples that came to mid but this has been happening all night. Smith getting hacked a lot too.

for the most part, we are a hurt team...

Howland’s patients have been outlined previously, so for some, practice probably wasn’t as smooth as Howland would have liked (I’m speculating)

but for the healthy guys? WTH?

2 points:

1. I think our BRUINS are stuck with playing PAC10 ball where we keep looking at the refs for calls for every contact…I remember when CBH stepped in with our Ben Ball Warriors, he instilled toughness in them, playing the east coast tough nose style ball

2. Don’t want to really re-open this topic, but, I think our players keep thinking they can get away with 8 minute efforts every game…not CBH’s fault they are not playing mature bball…sit them down, I know, I know, but if we can’t win with our first talent squad, I’m not so sure we can do much with our secondary squad. Besides, our guys are so immature, I’m not so sure they will get any message no matter what CBH does…

UCLA beat Montana State.

Lost to Montana. Neither game was impressive.

Worse performance of the season!

Pitiful, heartless, weak, unfocused, no composure…..

by UCLAallDay on Mar 10, 2011 8:05 PM PST via mobile reply actions

This was a matter of time

It was going to happen. We all knew it in the back of our mind. It would have happened most likely if Klay Thompson wasn’t puffing it up.

by Nestor on Mar 10, 2011 8:06 PM PST up reply actions

Worst part

They won’t learn their lesson. They haven’t all season. Maybe if someone can do a jedi mind trick on them to think every game is the last one at Pauley before the renovation, we’ll see them play hard the whole game.

Honeycrap waits until the game is out of reach to start attacking the basket. He reminds me a lot of David Justice — pretty numbers at the end of the season, but most of them during garbage time.

by UCLA4Life on Mar 10, 2011 8:09 PM PST up reply actions

But all game long

He doesn’t attack the basket. In fact, most of the season he doesn’t attack the basket. Always settling for the jumper. Last couple of minutes with the game out of reach SUDDENLY he decides to attack the basket?

Have to agree.

There have been some bad ones, but I think this is the worst.

Malcolm in the game til 30 seconds ago

What is Howland thinking? Why keep Malcolm in the game during garbage time? Just foolish…

by Jamm on Mar 10, 2011 8:09 PM PST reply actions

Yeah.

The whole team brainfarted tonight.

That should be easy to write

UCLA players manage to suck and blow at the same time.

CBH has got a lot of work to get these guys ready for the tournament. I just wonder at this point if he’s all coached out. The players have played 2 weeks of terrible basketball.

by UCLA4Life on Mar 10, 2011 8:15 PM PST up reply actions

I watched a few early games

from the other smaller conferences and it kills me to say they were scrapping for every loose ball like it was the final play of the game!
Why cant kids who play at the most storied school in basket ball history match that kind of intensity?

by TheUclan on Mar 10, 2011 8:10 PM PST reply actions

Ask the players

It’s not like Howland hasn’t had players in the past that played hard every game. Unfortunately, the days of Afflalo, Mata, LRMAM, Aboya, Westbrook, etc. look to be in the distant past.

by UCLA4Life on Mar 10, 2011 8:11 PM PST up reply actions

The nail right on the head!!!!!

"Success is never final, Failure is never fatal. It's Courage that count's" - John Wooden.

by TheUclan on Mar 10, 2011 8:16 PM PST up reply actions

Even on that

They don’t even put out the maximum effort to get themselves into a higher draft slot. It’s like some of them are content to just be a first-round pick, even if it’s the last pick, as long as they get that guaranteed contract. So you see just the bare minimum to tease scouts and fans on the “potential”.

by UCLA4Life on Mar 10, 2011 8:17 PM PST up reply actions

I don't blame CBH

unfortunately these kids obviously don’t understand or appreciate what the four letters mean to us fans who live and die UCLA…

by TheUclan on Mar 10, 2011 8:14 PM PST up reply actions

I agree...

for all who say CBH can’t coach because we lost the Final Fours with our best Ben Ball Warriors…hell, we lost to Florida with many doing well in the NBA, and Derrick freakin’ Rose, who some think could climb his way to the NBA MVP talks…we’ve just been out-talended in the PG department…so I guess I’ll blame CBH for not recruiting top PG after all these years…

by bruin98 on Mar 10, 2011 8:17 PM PST up reply actions

PG

Well, Holiday allegedly was supposed to be that guy, but we all know what happened there. Unfortunately he didn’t have a backup plan.

by UCLA4Life on Mar 10, 2011 8:18 PM PST up reply actions

Shame for all the fans who paid to see the game

I’m curious, when the Bruins get back to campus after putrid displays like this, how do fellow students interact with the the players? How much do the Daily Bruin’s writers criticize the team?

by bryanucla on Mar 10, 2011 8:11 PM PST reply actions

Woo-hoo - only 11 turnovers!

by KSBruin on Mar 10, 2011 8:14 PM PST reply actions

just sad

probably worst performance by a high seed in any post season tourney this year (no, I didn’t check the stats). Other high seeds lost, by a couple of points. Very disappointing end to Pac 10 season. Hard to see how we do much in NCAA, but “never give up, never surrender”.

by Vanman7475 on Mar 10, 2011 8:15 PM PST reply actions

Bruins always play up or down to their opponents level.

We always play better against the higher caliber teams. What does that tell you? It’s all mental.

by LongtimeBru on Mar 10, 2011 8:17 PM PST up reply actions

Better to lose tonight than next week.

It will be interesting to see how this team responds on the big stage. I, for one, cannot honestly predict a win since will likely be a 10 seed and match up against a 7 somewhere far, far away. Cleveland, Charlotte, Tampa, Tulsa?

This team is much better in the friendly confines of Pauley. Staples seemed like a road game, as will every game from here on out.

by orlandobruin on Mar 10, 2011 8:15 PM PST reply actions

If UCLA loses 1st round of NCAA Tournament...

What will the consequences be? We’ll all wait another year and have this same conversation next season…

Failure is becoming acceptable at UCLA…
