My fellow Bruins. Our long Bruins Nation-al nightmare is over.
We all knew that Alexandra Wallace was not a Bruin in heart and spirit with her mean spirited, disgusting, racist diatribe, but now from the Daily Bruin (H/T LA Bruin), she has finally done an honorable thing and decided to throw in the towel for her academic career at UCLA:
Alexandra Wallace announced she will no longer be attending UCLA in an apology letter released to the Daily Bruin on Friday.
As to the contents of said letter:
In an attempt to produce a humorous YouTube video, I have offended the UCLA community and the entire Asian culture. I am truly sorry for the hurtful words I said and the pain it caused to anyone who watched the video. Especially in the wake of the ongoing disaster in Japan, I would do anything to take back my insensitive words. I could write apology letters all day and night, but I know they wouldn’t erase the video from your memory, nor would they act to reverse my inappropriate action.
I made a mistake. My mistake, however, has lead to the harassment of my family, the publishing of my personal information, death threats, and being ostracized from an entire community. Accordingly, for personal safety reasons, I have chosen to no longer attend classes at UCLA.
After the first paragraph, I almost believed she was sincere (not really). Then we get a second paragraph full of a pathetic attempt to garner sympathy and try to deflect overall blame onto others. You almost had me, Alexandra (not really). Whatever. Now it's time to say goodbye.
I'll admit, upon hearing of this news, I also fired up YouTube for another mood setting song.
To tie things up, the Times reports that UCLA will not seek any further disciplinary action:
UCLA spokesman Phil Hampton said he could not comment on her statement about leaving school.
The school had announced earlier in the day that it would not proceed with any investigation or disciplinary action against Wallace for the video in which she complained about Asian students' behavior and crudely mimicked Asian languages.
"While we were appalled and offended by the sentiments expressed in the video, we have uncovered no facts to lead us to believe the student code of conduct was violated. The campus has no intention of pursuing the matter further," Hampton said earlier Friday.
That's probably for the best. No point in prolonging our role in this sorry affair. She's someone else's problem now like her sorry excuse of a father who also evidently saw nothing wrong with what she said. I hope this episode haunts him and his business too.
Good riddance to bad rubbish.
