Around SBN: 7 Important Questions About The Heat Vs. Celtics Series

Kevin Prince is still rehabilitating, and despite CRN's previous hopes will not be doing much of anything during spring ball. Recent surgeries have Darius Bell out and Nick Crissman limited. Brehaut's available, but just coming off baseball participation. Brett Hundley is there. While none of us wish any ill will on any Bruin, if there were ever a situation tailor-made for a freshman to come in and prove himself ready to contribute (or even start), this is it.

Interesting

If we are to believe the fishwrap, it indicates that the Willis situation is not a done deal. If the NCAA doesn’t clear him to play immediately, CRN is under the impression that he will remain at UCLA.

I only wish the best for the kid, which means I support his return to be close to family, but it will be interesting if this report is indeed true.

CRN said the same thing

in his conference call that went up on the official site today.

IMO

that’s a vastly more credible source.

Wouldn't he go back, play or not?

He’s going for family reasons, not to play somewhere else.

That's not my understanding

The kid wants to play football. He also wants to be near his family. From what I understand, if he’s not allowed to play football next year, he will stay at UCLA, visiting his father and grandmother as often as possible. If he has the ability to go and play near his family, he will do so. But he has a future in football and is doing his best to mesh those two aspects of his life.

Whatever his decision

Hope he does what’s best for him. It sounds like he’s got enough on his plate in his personal life.

I agree it would be cruel

but they might be worried about precedent. Allowing transfer exceptions due to a family members illness is a policy that would be prone to abuse. I know he sat out for a year, but the lawyers could have fun with an exception like this.

Exactly

it would open up an opportunity for players to transfer at will without exception whenever a family member was sick, which happens frequently. I want whatever is best for Brandon, but the NCAA is on the cusp of the dreaded “slippery slope”

wow our QB situation is a mess w/o Hundley

This fall we’ll have:
1. The most experience QB hasn’t really practiced for 18 months.
2. The 2nd most experienced QB is juggling baseball and football.
3. The 3 and 4 are hurt and are greener than grass.
4. A 5-Star freshman QB who enrolled early, practices and competes hard every day and has already become one of the faces of the program.

As much as I wish well for our other QB’s, I really freaking hope Hundley emerges as the clear-cut victor this Spring.

Just out of curiosity

Who are you referring to in number 1?

I thought so too

Although he practiced less than six months ago. I guess it is humor he is going for.

I think he means "fully healthy practice"

aye was going for the funnies

and was making a reference to Prince’s “will he practice – won’t he practice – or many he’ll practice but in a limited fashion” saga that we all went through last year

Don't forget

(recruited, I think) walk-ons Justin Posthuma and Maxwell Schuh, both RS freshmen. I’d never heard of them either, but they’re on the official roster.

Neu said Brehaut will be at spring football full time

and will miss baseball during that time.

Per the official site:

Only in 2009, when he

(s)aw his first game action at Washington St., playing 10 snaps … Did not fire a completion on his two pass attempts.

A healthy Prince

would be my first choice but unfortunately, it does not appear that he is built to make it through an entire season.

I can’t help but wonder if Brehaut’s decision to play baseball this year had anything to do with his struggles on the football field.

The extra rep’s that Hundley will get this spring can do nothing but help. So, although I would prefer Hundley to spend at least one full year as a backup, may be the best QB win the job whether a redshirt junior, actual junior, or true freshman.

Since when did Prince have microfracture surgery?
Prince injured his right knee last season and underwent arthroscopic surgery and had a microfracture procedure. He will continue to rehabilitate the knee.

That’s according to the Times’ article. I knew he had work done on his knee, but I didn’t realize it was microfracture. That’s IMO the single longest rehab common injury in sports. Yes, it technically only prevents the athlete from competing for about a year, but it really hurts their mobility and true recovery to get back to the point they were before the injury takes 3-4 years. Look at Amare Stoudemire or Greg Oden. Those were in a different sport, but the surgery is pretty major, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it causes him to lose a step in quickness and ability to make the right cuts.

Maybe...

If its small and in an ideal location, he’ll be close to 100% again, but I doubt thats the case here. Prince goes all out on everything, including injuries unfortunately.

Hoping for the best

I hope for the best for all our QB’s. I really liked Crissman when he played for Edison. He was terrific and I hope he overcomes all his health problems and contributes to our program. Hope all our QB’s are ready for fall practice.
