UCLA at Washington State Second Half Karma Game Thread
Well this has been an ugly start for the Bruins in Pullman this afternoon, 19-32 at the half. Time for a clean thread in hopes of also cleaning up this afternoon's karma. Here's the first half thread if you really want to relive the misery. This is your new game thread

Good. Glad to be responding to a clean new thread. Let's play Bruin BBall with authority.
No time lie the present………and I am performing an 8 clap right now Boys!!!
Why were there 2 Cougs in the paint
for about 4 seconds before any Bruins showed up?

Women 66-42.
U….C….L….A….can be heard in the background. Seniors getting to sit and get the applause they deserve. Nzekwe off to grad school after this season.
Go Bruins!
They are trying their hardest.
And their roster may be letting us back in this. Whether we win is another thing. But I wish our team was trying its hardest.
greg in denver, UCLA guy for life - BruinsNation.com
And I share that dissatisfaction with you
I meant WSU is trying their hardest. I wish we were.
greg in denver, UCLA guy for life - BruinsNation.com
Come on boys
UCLA is so far superior to WSU in athleticism and talent, especially without Klay Thompson playing today
Game over 66-48.
Most wins in our history for the women. Play Friday 2:30 at staples. And then, with a win, on Saturday.
Go Bruins!
Congrats to Coach Caldwell and all the team
Truly a group we can be proud of.

an extra year of seasoning would do wonders for this team
the defense is very close to being there, and the offense needs a little polishing

Everything goes inside first

Incredible
When we pass the ball and look to go inside rather than shoot contested jump shots good things happen … INCREDIBLE!

Is that a surprise to any fan of U.C.L.A. basketball the last 8 years?
greg in denver, UCLA guy for life - BruinsNation.com
Should have been doing this for the first 22 minutes.
Why do these guys just think they can turn the switch when they need? Effort works.

Well I bought the whole package and through ucla as a season ticket holder.

Not that bad
I remember paying ~ $35 for a single session in the cheap seats a few years back
formerly bruinhoo
Yep.
Friday the women have their semis at 2:30 (1st game for the women) and then the final on Friday. Nikki said today it was nice they have the 2 seat means they don’t have to play at the other place (the earlier women’s games are held at that other place).
Go Bruins!
cant go on thursday
but im going on friday if they make it
Okay
Perhaps WSU is regretting having Klay come to the game because it looks like he was teaching the team how to tolk during halftime … absolutely pathetic effort by WSU so far
I don't know.
I think we just started playing. It should have been like this the whole game…and they were playing on emotional fumes.
Go Bruins!
I think the key to UCLA's offense is mastering the inside out game
I don’t know much about basketball, but it seems like the best way to maximize our strengths and hide our weaknesses

Don’t do a Tim Duncan if you don’t have those skills

At least I haven't seen him being lazy (ever)
but he looks pretty gunshy with his shooting now.
greg in denver, UCLA guy for life - BruinsNation.com
UCLA is rolling, up by 4 with 5 minutes left
since that time UCLA has been outscored 8-0 and has taken outside shots almost exclusively … that’s a problem
That's not the problem
The players are not executing the offense at all. They’ve practically quit on the offensive end with their terrible choices.
we were rolling with the smaller lineup
not doing as well with reeves and josh
It feels like a tank job
Unless these guys get their collective heads out of their asses and start playing on both ends of the court.
should not
be shooting that many 3s to begin with in this game.. attack attack attack.. not prepared going in and wilting down the stretch again
This game is what we do. It's who we are...
Wish we were better.

I think it's worse than pathetic...
It’s mediocre. Yawnstipating. Hard to watch. Uninspired. It’s so mediocre I can’t figure out what’s wrong.
Running the offense takes effort
Standing in one place, passing the ball around the perimeter, and hoisting jumpshots doesn’t. Guess which one we’re doing?

Where was that aggressive driving earlier? WSU was in the penalty for a very long time and UCLA only had 3 fouls and the Bruins just played sissy offense.
So I just got back from the women's game...
where we crushed WSU. How’s the foul situation for us right now?
Clutch play by Malcolm.....but I almost feet worried because we played so shitty today.....we deserve to lose at buzzer....lets keep our fingers crossed!!!
I worry about Reeves' defense
He has been getting burned off the dribble by whoever he guards. WSU will go to that well I think.
yup, and now OT

Glad they missed. Have no idea why they would give that foul.

Where has that been all game.
It was impressive.
Excellent
Smith in a high pick and roll is freeing up Reeves. Very good coaching. WSU is so worried about Smith.
so how will this affect our seeding in the pac-10 tournament, if we're tied for 2nd with Washington?

team takes their identity from their coach
hence the awfulness
How is it CBH's fault?
He was yelling for JA to push the ball after the rebound.
I've never seen a team shut it down so quickly when they had it going
The offense went sluggish. Then left the other team wide open. It just makes me insane to watch this.
no different
then when we had superior pg play, same crappy offense here but collison and farmar were better at bailing us out

Howland was yelling to push it
And nobody did. Result is they get into their offense late and turn it over. Just terrible.
Lesser of two evils
But isn’t Anderson+Lamb a better option than Anderson and a Jones playing with one hand and no confidence?
I still think the problem starts at the top...
The ball movement stopped. He had nothing left to do but desperation. The a systemic failure.
think he was just trying to beat the shot clock
greg in denver, UCLA guy for life - BruinsNation.com
Reeves only got the ball...
with like 3 seconds left. Not much he could do other than shoot it and hope for the best.
It's called a shot clock.
It influences who shoots the ball if plan A, B, C or D fails.
They came out strong at the start of OT. Now they're flat.
Can’t even get off a shot anymore.
Howland has no offensive clue.
We can’t win with defense alone
I wonder how many
heart attacks this team has caused
Lee MVP if we win.
Just on account of his FT shooting.
Forgot about that.
Both great performances. I feel good knowing we have a go-to guy who can hit FTs with the game on the line, though.
Consequences of the next minute - next week
Win, and we play the winner of Ducks/Beavers (or ’Furd/Beavs) on Thursday. Lose, and we play a rested USC.
formerly bruinhoo
TH with the steal?
Great job. Excellent aggressive move from Lee. I guess the difference in the offense the last few minutes is not having Lee on the floor.
finally
an agressive defensive decision when we can determine our own fate.. an aggressive offensive possession earlier would have been nice
ok i get it now
the plan was to miss on offense so we can get a steal on defense which leads to transition points
Troy is burning
If we win, I guess I'll be happy.
I just have a hard time believing we get ourselves into these situations.

GREAT defense by JA
I was hoping they’d pressure it too.

greg in denver, UCLA guy for life - BruinsNation.com
Excellent job by Reeves
He didn’t hold the ball waiting for the foul. He immediately passed it to Lee when he was open. Smart.
I am not just saying this because of that last play
But i HATED JA last year and its pretty hard for me to change the way I feel but no one on this team has impressed me more with his progress and maturity than JA this year. On a team with alot of questionable personalities JA gives me someone to root for.
I totally agree.
It is a wonderful thing to watch. He is now the epitome of Coach’s definition of success. And I think, unlike some others here, that it says a lot about CBH. Never would have seen improvement with the St John’s “coach”.
Go Bruins!
Food for thought.
Could we be saying the same thing about TH next year? People seem to forget he and Reeves are only sophomores. It took Jerime until his junior year for the light to start coming on.
I hope so.
That’s why I won’t write them off yet, even if I have bald patches watching them. Still a long way to go before they can be mentioned with the serbian who will not be named.
greg in denver, UCLA guy for life - BruinsNation.com
However
it shouldn’t take until a junior year to learn to expend full effort all the time. Skills make take time. Heart never should.

skills will never come. See same Serbian.

he was satirizing Bruin805’s “Fire Howland” posts from above.
Its sad when UCLA fans lower their standards
If you don’t mind underachieving and poor effort than yes he’s great.
oh and way to defend Howland now, when the game is over.
Well
If beating WSU is our end goal then: Mission accomplished.
I, for one, hope we reach a little higher
thanks for using all caps
But is it on Howland or the players?
I think it’s on the players. If the team comes out flat and doesn’t execute according to the game plan, that’s on the players. CBH uses all of his TOs to get the message to them to run it right.
It must be true
Because your comments are all in capitals. :)
You mean if I just hit the caps lock button
I WIN! Wish someone had told me this a long time ago.
Go Bruins!
It's good to know we have that tool.
None of the games we may or may not have left will be blowouts in our favor.
you know, for this somewhat flawed team, a great road split.
Nailing 2 seed is big. And winning helps our confidence.
Helps our confidence or the players' confidence?
I’m still hoping they show a string of consistent games, because this on/off switch is not good for the heart.
man, I totally hear you! I'm a sr citizen (at least in the state of MN) and this
one was tough on the old ticker.
Too tired to go to the gym after a UCLA game
Outside of the Arizona and OSU games, I’m too worn out from watching to work out.
I really don't see how you could not be happy.
The first half, sure. Second? Not a chance.
"Every day was a good day at UCLA." -Coach John Wooden
There were some problems in the second half
They started to be less aggressive after getting a 4 point lead and really didn’t attack the defense, especially when WSU was in the penalty and UCLA had only 3 team fouls. WSU was doubling Smith hard and in OT the Bruins finally took advantage with the first 2 possessions by having Smith go to a high pick-and-roll that freed Reeves down low.
another factor, i think, in the change was WSU was better at getting back on defense
i really didn’t see an attempt to change our approach, which was always to take advantage of our bigs.
agree with you Oswego! We came back from a stinker of a first half.
I’d also say that WSU kind of wore down, and came back “to earth” a bit. Motum was less Kobe-esque in the second half.
Stanford down 12 to Cal at halftime
A Loss places them into a 7th place tie w/Oregon, puts them as the 8-seed against Oregon State on Weds. We would get the winner of Oregon/ASU in that event.
formerly bruinhoo
Depends on the outcome of Cal-Stanford
If Cal wins (they are up 12 early in the 2nd half), we play the winner of Oregon/ASU.
If Stanford wins, we play the winner of Stanford/ASU
formerly bruinhoo
Anyone think we'd see this team sealing wins with FT's?
I didn’t either
greg in denver, UCLA guy for life - BruinsNation.com
if it was going to be anyone, I'd say Malcolm or Zeek are the true clutch guys.
Every FT in this game was important. I recall zeek making a few tonight. Josh also made 2 when he should have dunked.

4-2 over the last 6 games ain't bad
that is what I expected. We took care of business at home and dropped a couple on the road. The best thing that came out of these last 6 games is that our defense really stepped it up. Now the offense is another story

I was worried we could easily finish 2-4, so I am happy with the results. However, watching the games, I understand the frustration of many, and myself as the games went on, as we could have won every one of those.
