#SFatPauley: Desperate UCLA Deletes Bruins' Facebook Criticisms of Student Seating Scandal

Morgan Center acting like the looooooooooooooooooosing team. (Photo by Stephen Dunn/Getty Images)

As is the typical tone deaf Morgan Center way, criticism of the plan to railroad through one of the most dishonest and underhanded plans to strip students of their courtside presence has been deleted, and replaced with typical boilerplate nonsense:

Thanks for the feedback Bruins. Your comments have been forwarded to the appropriate individuals.

Thanks, indeed. Thanks for thereby legitimizing every call for Bruins and Bruin fans to vote with their wallets and withhold donations/season ticket purchases as the only means for effectively communicating with these clowns.

But wait, they said the objections were forwarded to the "appropriate individuals", right? I mean, they've been so upfront and honest about their intentions in the past like with the clear cut survey they sent out to students, duly informing them of their intent to move the entire student section to the worst seats in the house in order to maintain group contiguity. It's not as if they justified their entire decision here on one vaguely worded question buried deep within a sea of unrelated queries in order to get the heavily doctored and completely tangential result that they were looking for. Oh wait...

Paired with the loss of Nikki Caldwell to LSU, the writing is on the wall that this dishonest, corrupt, incompetent organization is seemingly doing everything in their power to do things absolutely the wrong way.

Coach Caldwell represented us with class, and I know I, and Bruin fans everywhere are grateful to her for what she's done. The true problem here is becoming clearer by the day, and now is not the time to throw up our hands and let Morgan Center get away with it.

I urge everyone to continue to bombard the UCLA Athletics FB page, and let them know that they no longer work in a bubble, that we are watching, and we will not take their soulless money grab lying down. It's clear now that they will do whatever it takes for the criticism to die down so they can continue to railroad this thievery through.

Morgan Center; this IS your problem, and we will not rest until this and other travesties are fixed.

Great Post

but I wonder if Facebook is the best way to do this? I definitely gave them my two cents on there, but we all know the facebook page is run by some poor guy who is instructed to delete bad PR. I think we should all email the chancellor, DG, and the daily bruin. We need everyone to know

Facebook is just one target of many

And you are right, We should let everyone know

Chancellor Block: chancellor@ucla.edu
AD Guerrero: dguerrero@athletics.ucla.edu
the Bruin: www.dailybruin.com/index.php/page/contact (currently crashed)

And email and call and FB and text and tweet your fellow friends/alums/fans and get them to do the same.

I posted on FB here, and then screen-shotted it for when the cowards pull it down.

This community Is the best way

We know that Morgan center watches and listens to this site. The new Facebook page will help because they do not control it and can’t hide the comments. Additionally:

Let chancellor Block know in Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/uclachancellor

Post a tweet to UCLA athletics: @uclaathletics

Post any tweet and tag it with: #firedanguerrero

I think we need to coordinate and hit all available outlets if we want to be heard.

Just wondering, who is the best person to email?

I remember during football season I emailed 2 people. It was Dan Guerrero and Glen Toth. Anyways, DG never, ever responds to my emails. Glen Toth at leased replied back with a:

“Response noted. Thanks for your concern.”

I mean, do they even read our emails/letters? It’s not like my letters are inappropriate; they are clearly written in the most stern, and professional tone.

I HATE YOU Dan Guerrero is professional right? I kid, I kid! But really, who is the best person to email who will actually read our emails? Glen Toth?

Everyone and frequently

An individual message is basically disregarded. But, it is essential. I posted on the athletic department’s Facebook page the day the news broke. They let it sit there until BN posted the link today and then it was taken down. Sadly, it isn’t about eloquence or logic, it is about persistence and volume.

If anyone would like to read/critique my email, here it is:

Dear Glenn Toth,

I am writing this email to you, though forwarded it as well to Chancellor Block and AD Dan Guerrero, mainly because in the past you have responded to my emails of concern in the past.

First and foremost, I would like to state that I am a current 3rd year student at UCLA majoring in History and minoring in Urban and Regional Studies. I have also been a Den Season Ticket holder for 3 years and counting and am planning to renew my Den season tickets in my senior year.

Next, I would simply like to address my discontent with Morgan Center’s ineffectiveness at maintaining Coach Nikki Caldwell as our women’s basketball coach. While I cannot necessarily blame Coach Caldwell for leaving to take the position at LSU given the higher fan support and higher salary, I’m disappointed that one of the best women’s basketball coaches we ever had has left Westwood. In 3 years, Coach Caldwell transformed UCLA into a perennial powerhouse in women’s basketball. Had it not been for Stanford, UCLA would have been undefeated in regular season play. It is a shame that the athletic administration was able to let Coach Caldwell slip away when winning a national title in women’s basketball was potentially a year or two away. In my opinion, UCLA’s inability to maintain such a wonderful coach reflects the ineptitude of the Morgan Center’s ability to maintain and progress UCLA athletics. Would the late J.D. Morgan have let the great John Wooden go to another school when he began winning and becoming successful at UCLA?

Furthermore, I am extremely appalled by the administration’s moving of the Den seating in Pauley Pavilion. As a student who was able to sit in the Den for 2 years, as I did not win basketball season tickets via the lottery my freshman year, I am disappointed that new students will no longer be able to enjoy the court side seats that I and so many students generations before me have enjoyed. Not only this is disappointing in regards to student viewing, but the new Den seating harms what might have been the effectiveness of home court advantage. Even in the new design of Pauley Pavilion, the seats behind the back court are very, very far away. As a result, it will be very difficult to hear the cheers and noise that the student section makes. This in general will render the effectiveness of the student section and their contribution to making Pauley Pavilion useless. When students sat in the court side seats, they were very close to the court and were able to contribute loud noises that either disrupted the team play of the opponent and to contribute loud noises for our team players to feed energy off of.

I understand I cannot change your mind or change the decision that the administration has decided to make, but I just wanted to let you know that as a student that has attended many basketball games and even camped out 24 hours in the rain for the final home game at Pauley against Arizona for Den vouchers, I am extremely disappointed to hear that:

1) We’ve lost one of the best women’s basketball coaches in the country, who had huge potential to win UCLA a national championship either next year or the year after.

2) Future UCLA students will no longer be able to enjoy the excitement of sitting near the side lines and will no longer contribute as meaningfully to the game as they have had in the past.

I hope you read this email and are growing aware of the discontent and unhappiness this had brought to students, alumni, boosters, and fans.

Excellent.

Just get rid of one of the “in the past”s in the first paragraph.

It's up to the students.

Those who donate to the school are going to keep their collective wallets in their pockets and purses. I think that’s a given. The alums are turning off the faucet. I have heard exactly zero from the students. It’s time to get the boycott organized. Not one “man, woman and child” should go to any UCLA athletic event, other than to walk the picket line outside. I haven’t seen any news about this, though. Where is the student outrage?

Unfortunately, I don’t think I hear anything from those most impacted – the students. When I was a student, “being drafted” meant something entirely different than it does now. There was a protest slogan then that should be used now: “Hell no, we won’t go.” That should be the only thing that any Bruin says about any event at the school, from sports to anything else. Whatever generates revenue for the school shouild be boycotted. But instead of chanting, instead of a Wisconsin-like demonstration, I hear nothing. It looks like business as usual for the student body. Where is the student outrage?

The Den should be taking the lead on this, but I’ve heard nothing. Is the Den leader one of those guys who is more aligned with the administration than with the students? If so, then he’s got to go. I don’t want to hear any excuse about working quietly, behind the scenes. That generally means he’s being a sycophant. I see nothing in any national news about the leader of UCLA’s rooting section doing anything. Where is the student outrage?

If the students don’t give a crap, why should alums get worked up about this? We have our good old days to remember. I have said it many times before: Students, THESE are your good old days. Are these the memories you want to look back on? Until the students start makibng things uncomfortable for morgan off-center, they will think all our ranting here is the same as that little girl’s weeping post about Britney Spears. Where is the student outrage?

morgan off-center is winning by doing nothing. I’m running out of ire and energy. I am not going to pur any more of my emotions into this issue until the kids who are still students make it clear that any of them actually give a crap. Is anyone going to step up and demonstrate any leadership? It’s up to the students now. Where is the student outrage? I see none.

Though many of us enjoy

tracking the successes and travails of Bruin athletics in all sports, I’d wager a sizable number of students (and alums, and other fans) only key in to what is happening during football and men’s basketball. Though I agree the fight has to begin now, I think we would be able to drum up support faster if one of the high-visibility sports was in season. Just another hurdle we’ll need to get over.

are we worried about the presence of the student section, because right now it only seems to show up for important games. The intensity comes from the spirit squad, yell crew, and band. The spirit squad and band are separated from the den, and it’s up to the yell crew to keep everything together. Maybe moving the den to behindthe basket, where the band and spirit squad sit, is an attempt to create a more unified student presence. It may not be ideal for those who enjoy sitting on the sideline, but if the den presence was stronger and more consistent in attendance, then moving them wouldn’t have been such an easy option.

The reality actually is

That everything you just said applies to the geriatric alums twice over, so obviously rewarding them is the answer here right?

I'm hoping...

…that much of the apparent lack of outrage from the students is due to the fact that it is the weekend. I just checked their schedule and the Spring Qtr just started last week, so its not that they are on Spring Break or studying for finals. Hopefully, we will see a rising segment of the student population show their strength and outrage when school returns tomorrow…
