Around SBN: 7 Important Questions About The Heat Vs. Celtics Series

Honeycutt @ #17 & Malcom Lee @ #36. Not too bad, but still would have liked to have seen them come back and improve that.

Come back

ML should have not hired an agent. He should have just tested the NBA and go after senior year. Sad to see him go.

Given the players staying in school this year

that would likely have entered the draft this year had there not been the threat of a lockout, an improved Honeycutt would have a hard time being the 17th-best player in next year’s draft. Don’t get me wrong, I think staying a year to listen to and learn from Howland would be in Honeycutt’s long-term interest, but as a short-term business decision leaving now might not be a bad idea.

It's kind of sad/insulting to think Honeycutt will go higher than ML.

ML clearly has the better mentality and commitment. I believe Honeycutt is being drafted on the ‘potential’ that NBA execs are so enamored with.

What's funny to me is...

I don’t understand what his “potential” is. He’s shown to me that his offensive game consists of shooting jumpers (and not even very well) and has less than average ball handling skills. His defense consists of getting pushed around by bigger guys and getting beat by quicker guys. But oh yeah, he will come block the occasional shot or two to save his own ass. Oh, btw, he lacks a heart too.

On a side note, while I wish Malcolm the best, he better get used to the idea of living in a different country. No way he makes it in the NBA for the long term. I hope I eat crow though.

re: Honeycutt's potential

court awareness + high release point on jumper + leaping ability + 6’8" + long arms = potential. NBA GMs believe that it’s harder to teach the above qualities than it is to teach a player to value possessions. I tend to agree with the GMs on this one.
