Be sure to read the ballot wording

An initial wording on the ballot asks the voter if he/she supports the Athletic Department’s plan to move the students to the end zone, in which case the correct vote would be “No”. The final wording will be shown when the ballots are released on Monday.

It looks like

Few of the apologists are there pushing the line on how students need to be behind the basket so they can be “unified.”

by Achilles on Apr 30, 2011 12:51 PM PDT reply actions

I don't usually say this,

but that is just the worst possible opinion. The entire ARENA is unified. Ugh. It’s not like they’re competing in a cheerleading competition. So misguided it’s scary.

It's people power-tripping on leading cheers

THEY would rather lead cheers than watch the game. And it’s more satisfying for THEM if they can get a unified student section up on its feet.

Look who’s in favor of this: Cheerleaders and their groupies.

by Seth Chandler on May 2, 2011 10:06 PM PDT up reply actions

have to disagree

And no, I’m not a former cheerleader, nor a groupie. To accuse them of any ulterior motive is just a cop-out. They are students and diehard fans, just as anyone in the Den.

by BruinMW on May 2, 2011 10:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Whoa...

the people I know on Spirit Squad are NOT in favor of this either. Let’s not make unfair generalizations here.

by BruinKid on May 2, 2011 11:57 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know any of these people personally, but the facts suggest that Seth's assessment is correct

I would hope that Bigknife is a good person. I’m sure he is in many ways, but on the issue of the student seating fiasco, it looks at best questionable. Why have we heard nothing from Bigknife or any of the Den “leaders” on this? I don’t believe for a second that he has doesn’t know about the Bruins Nation, so he has to know that people are questioning his motivies. Still, I see nothing where Bigknife is imploring students to vote NO on banishment? He has said nothing publicly, as far as I can see. In fact, Morgan off-center has said more.

I can’t speak for him or tell him what to do. I can only say what I would do if I were president of the Den. I would be screaming as loud as I screamed at games to keep students on the sidelines. I would explain in detail about what went on at the meetings with the leaders at morgan off-center. I haven’t heard a peep, though. The obvious conclusion is that Bigknife has nothing to say. The speculation is the reason for his having nothing to say. I think one fair inference is that he thinks the decision is a correct one, and he wants the students to be banished. That makes zero sense, so I reject it. The only remaining conclusion is that he would prefer not to offend any of the leaders at morgan off-center. I really can’t think of any other reason for Bigknife’s silence when he should be speaking. My conclusion that Bigknife doesn’t want to offend guerrero and his band of merry men says that he in fact does have an ulterior motive.

This is why I agree with Seth Chandler on this. I think it’s the fair inference to be drawn from the facts that we know. Bigknife has it within his power to change my perspective of him, but as of now, I think of him more as a Quisling than a leader.

The Den...

and Spirit Squad are not the same thing. I was specifically commenting on Seth’s comment about our cheerleaders.

As for Elan, I cannot speak for him, but I think he’s coming at this from the mindset that it’s the best we can get out of the Morgan Center. Remember, at the infamous Den meeting where we agreed to it, they only gave us two proposals, and the other one was worse.

IMO, it all comes down to money, whether or not the Morgan Center wants to admit that to the alumni. And even tasser10’s compromise plan that he posted still shows a loss of $600,000, and that’s assuming the original donation levels, which won’t happen because not enough people were buying them in the first place. Using the 20% reduced rate they offered, his plan would bring in less than $22.9 million, compared to the over $26 million the current plan that banishes us behind the basket would bring.

Is there another way we can make up the shortfall? Can the Morgan Center send out yet another e-mail to alumni reneging on their 20% discount offer? How well would that go over? These are questions to which I have no answer, but which I feel must be addressed with a solid plan if we are to make changes. I think, but obviously don’t know for sure, that Elan simply feels when it comes down to money, it’s pointless to fight the Morgan Center because they’re not going to budge. Of course, this was before Guerrero’s e-mail to the student ticket holders last Friday, so things may have changed. I don’t know.

I agree that BN and the students should be working together on this more closely. I actually have much more to say on this, and about the Den and where the students are in all this, but I don’t think I can safely post those thoughts here. Not at this time.

Now, maybe I’ve gotten too cynical about this, but screaming out loud doesn’t work here in California anymore. We tried that last year to stop the Regents from raising our tuition a whopping 32%, with the largest protest at UCLA since the Vietnam War, and what good did it do? They raised our fees, and are going to raise them AGAIN this year.

"It is pointless to fight Morgan Center"?

We appreciate your contributions here but sometimes it appears that you have no concept of what has happening. It is a matter of both – raising your voice and also working on the backend. If we never raised our voice and methodically called out Morgan Center, we would have never been at this point.

Also, $600k in the greater scheme is not all that much. Morgan Center can raise that if they have a sense of strategic vision and plan for the big picture. It is clear they don’t. That is where we come in. If we don’t call them out, apparently no one in UCLA’s sedated online base will.

I think BruinKid was just guessing at Elan's point of view

BruinKid is not the one saying it’s pointless. His actions and words have demonstrated that.

And as for screaming out loud in California, that’s why tasser’s economic analysis is so important, and comments from Wooden’s and Howland’s players are so important, and why those on Facebook and the petition saying they are withholding donations are so important. It’s not just screaming. It’s facts and reason and the bottom line – money – that are making our arguments.

Yep.

And you can bet I’ve been talking to just about everyone I know about the short-term versus the long-term financial impact of having less of a home court advantage.

Something you can help us with maybe?

Would you able to write a fanpost on exactly how a student can vote against this on MyUCLA – listing the step by step process …. i.e. where to click etc.

by Achilles on May 3, 2011 12:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Hmm...

I think UCLA14 is better suited, because I cannot vote in this as a grad student. All I know is that if I log onto my.UCLA, I won’t see the box or link or whatever they’re using now to let you vote in the elections.

by BruinKid on May 3, 2011 7:26 PM PDT up reply actions

It's not a loss if you don't already have it

By your logic they should do away with ALL student seats because the loss is in the million dollar range. Don’t fall for their flawed logic.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

by tasser10 on May 3, 2011 7:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Exactly.

They can charge $1 million per seat and have 100 times that revenue, but they haven’t sold any seats at that price, so it’s irrelevant.

My messge to Elan
Elan simply feels when it comes down to money, it’s pointless to fight the Morgan Center

It’s not pointless. It’s exactly the opposite. Morgan’s decisions are costing them money already. Besides being the right decison, our stance is the better long term economic decison, too. Morgan looks like they are beginning to realize this. We’re going to do this and we aren’t going to stop. Get on the winning side, Elan. It’s never too late.

I was delayed in getting a reply to you, BruinKid, but it looks like my brothers have done it for me

It’s not pointless, especially if the odds are long. Think of all the insurmountable obstacles and impossible odds which have been overcome. A little bit of light cancels out a lot of darkness. When lots of light and lots of voices talk about what that light has exposed, the force becomes overwhelming.

(Wow – I didn’t realize I was such a philosopher.)
